SC at its worst is still worlds above their worst.

I politely disagree. The only song on SC that I think might stand up to the rest of DT's catalog is Prophets of War, which is the only track that I find inoffensive in every way (and I don't even consider this song especially good). As it stands, most of SC's tracks have extremely glaring flaws, most of which stem from simple unimaginativity.

But even despite their flaws, they are still clearly songs written by very skilled songwriters in the melodies, riffs, harmonies, whereas WDADU lacks a lot of even the most basic songwriting knowledge, and fails far worse than anything DT have written since IaW. There's just not even a basic for comparison with how poorly written some of those WDADU songs are.

Wait, aren't you the guy who jumps all over people for stating opinions as facts, only to now spout that drivel?  Puh-lease.

Nothing about my post was drivel, you just disagree with it.

Gotta love the respect opinions get on DTF.....  :\

Do I get half a prize for guessing ACOS?

Those 3 are great songs, but new millennium is a bit high IMO.

You presented it as a fact.  Saying there is no basis (assuming that was a typo and you meant basis, not basic, since your sentence wouldn't have made sense the other way) for comparison is basically saying it is a fact and not even debatable.

Bizkit, I think your list is my favorite.  Not because I agree with your choices (ha ha ha), but because I just want to sit back in a comfortable chair and enjoy the fireworks of people's reactions.

For what it's worth (very little, I'm sure), I honestly didn't get that impression at all.

But sometimes it's hard to figure out whether the list is true, or whether it's written that way in order to get a rise out of people. I mean, even I was tempted to put Forsaken at #1 just to see what people would say. It was in my top 10, so it's not like it would've been much of a stretch, but putting it above ACOS, LTL and Metropolis would've stirred up quite an uproar, no doubt.

FlyingBIZKIT

This list reflects how I feel about DT. It would be pointless to make an untruthful list.

I'm so sorry I didn't explicitly disclaimer every single fragment with "imo" although I figured it was sort of assumed on a forum that posts were opinions. I did not mean to present it as fact.
There's a huge difference between the way I presented my opinion, and say, the way BOOLsheet presents opinions as facts (ie literally stating things as fact).

If you actually want to discuss the topic at hand, go right ahead, but simply calling my post drivel was downright rude and disrespectful, and adds nothing to the discussion.

Getting a reaction out of people isn't pointless.

That's true. In his case, quite a few times, his statements included the phrase, "you are wrong."

I hereby proclaim Flyingbizkit as the Troll King in DTF.

You can't do that! I already proclaimed him the Homer Simpson!

I don't think so. It's just a reaction to Bizkit posting a list that many people disagree with.

I'd go ahead now, but I don't want people to whine  ;D

Well, I doubt that any posting speed that you post at will annoy the people here as much as your rankings do, so feel free to continue.

To be honest I don't really see it as being terribly controversial when someone puts a well loved song high on their list but just not that high. A Change Of Seasons not even making a top 50 would be controversial maybe, but just being placed quite highly but not in the very top doesn't seem that strange considering the range of DT songs to choose from. I wouldn't really have batted an eyelid at Metropolis at ranked around 30 if people hadn't started commenting on it - but then people often leave songs from my top 10 or 20 off their lists entirely so maybe I'm just more used to it than some DT fans  :lol

You're taking too long!! Why haven't you updated yet? I'm going crazy with anxiety here!!! Come on!!!  :censored

19. Through My Words/Fatal Tragedy

Through My Words is a great opener for Fatal Tragedy, which is an amazing song. Again, it's one of the first DT songs I've heard, and it has always been one of my favorites. The chorus is SO powerful, and it's among their best.. the shrink and grow section is so unique and creative as well. duhduh, duhduhduhduh. JP be meltin doze facez..

18. Trial of Tears

Meh. Jk. Great album closer, and IMO, reminds me of a humid summer in the woods, even though it's about NYC. So, yeah. There's something about this song that's hard to explain..the magic of it...the intro is gorgeous, and MP playing with those blocks gives me writer's block. Welcome to the wasteland...............................that whole last part is so memorable. God damn this writeup is ass.

17. This is the Life

This track has jumped so high for me, because it's simply beautiful. It's not a crazy, badass track at all. It's....chill...which I think DT does a great job at. JR makes this song what it is..those melodies are a part of me now, because they just are. The highlight of the song is when it builds up (but doesn't break down) to "Feed the illusion you dream about..." That whole part. One of the best parts of the album for sure. Though when the tracklisting was revealed, I thought this was going to be the cheesiest song ever.

16. The Spirit Carries on

One of the few songs that can make me cry, and I'm not ashamed. I get a huge Pink Floyd vibe when listening to this, and considering they are my 3rd favorite band, that's not a problem. James and JP rule this song. My favorite moment is when JLB gets really into it at the end. The emotion it holds is just crazy, and I get goosebumps just thinking about this masterpiece. This song has helped me get through bad times, and I will never forget it..

PROGdrummer

I dont like This Is The Life...  :yeahright
kinda boring
Your other choices were great though, a lot of my favorites there.

Agreed! And for what it's worth, FB, I'd second a fair few of the more controversial placings.

A Change of Seasons is a solid eight out of ten from me, and Metropolis not much higher than a seven. Both good songs, both good scores. I get the hype for ACoS but I'm just not glued to it like I am to some fairly big swathes of their discography, and that'd include some relatively mundane songs. Understand why it grabs so many number one spots and recognise its brilliance, but it's not only not my favourite DT song, it's not even my favourite DT epic.

Metropolis, meanwhile, I don't understand the hype at all.  Perfectly solid performer, and it makes sense as the band's signature track, but outside the instrumental section there's not a huge amount going on. Some fairly simple-sounding* chugging riffs, complete with some good vocal bits, with particular respect to the backing vocals... but man, not even among my top five songs on that album.  There's not much there that Under a Glass Moon, for instance, doesn't do better. Keeping in mind of course that this is all relative! I like it, it's a seven out of ten, and if there were more seven out of tens in the world I'd be a very happy man. But I'm simply not "getting" it, I'm afraid - never at number one. Probably more my problem than anyone else's, but there we go.

*No idea how hard they are to actually play - guitar is not my area!

All good songs.  All higher than I would put them, but all good songs nonetheless.   :tup

I agree with most of what you said.  I have expressed my less than enthusiasm for Metropolis and gotten some nasty responses.  So be careful what you say some times. :P

I think what fires people up the most isn't that Metropolis is at 34, it's like, "How can there be 33 Dream Theater songs that you think are better than Metropolis?"

Speaking of which, BIZKIT, how can you like This Is The Life better than Metropolis? Seriously.

And The Spirit Carries on? I mean, I love TSCO a lot more than most people here, but come on.

Fatal Tragedy I can see.
