Great song, and a great way to end one of DT's very best albums. However, nothing on SFAM individually makes my top 20, except maybe TSCO. But a nice choice anyway. :tup

FF > TSCO

Your opinions are wrong.

I beg to differ. In this particular case his opinion is correct.

Ah, cool.  Finally Free is definitely a fantastic song.  And you're right, I don't know why I didn't think of it when trying to guess your top three.  Great choice, and a great (pair of) write-up(s).

Also, I cannot believe that Vacant wouldn't be on your list at all, so I have to call it as number one.

theseoafs

Fine song, although I greatly disagree with this characterization.

It reminds me a little bit of a combination between In The Presence of Enemies Part 2, and The Ministry of Lost Souls, almost as though the two had a secret love affair (before they became famous) and gave birth to this bastard child which turned out to be more successful and more incredible than the two of them put together.

For this to even make sense, time travel must be involved.

Finally Free would also have to be a really awful song with an out-of-place, 20 minute instrumental section.

Zydar

BlackInk

Awesome, a placement I not only partly agree with, but a choice I totally understand and think is well deserved.

Mladen

It's a great song, but for some reason my least favorite on Scenes from a memory.

Ħ

Late to the alirocker party, but I'm guessing her number one is Vacant.

Of course time travel is involved, Petrucci played the secret holy riff and sent Finally Free to a better place in time

That's why it's the bastard child. It shunned the expectations of it's more metal, more instrumentally minded parents and decided to shove a brass band in it's rear end...

Of the song I mean.

To things moving closer to the speed of light (299'792'458 m/s) time appears to move slower. Things surpassing the speed of light should (theoretically) move "backwards" through time, this should explain further how John Petrucci accomplished this.

I personally never really liked Finally Free - I mean, it's okay and I sing along whenever I hear it and stuff, but it's never really clicked for me. Still, good call, and hilarious write-up (the first one) :rollin :rollin

Oh, and btw, I'm calling Through Her Eyes or Vacant as Nr. One, though I'm leaning t'wards Through Her Eyes, even though it does lack the strings (as far as I know), but that's just a gut feeling.

Finally Free should be played live again. Especially with the Metropolis '00 ending. Excellent choice.

And my number one is, drumroll please!

1. Raw Dog

No, my taste in music isn't that piss poor (No offence to those who enjoy the song)

1: Vacant
You guessed correctly my friends, and for all the right reasons. Now, I'd love to ramble about this song, but honestly, I can't. I'll break down crying. You know, because I'm a teenage girl and shit, so let my more sane self try and sound a tad more intelligent.
--------------------

I know I'm probably going to get a lot of shit for having this as my number one instead of so many epic, beautiful and emotional songs (I mean for Christ sakes, it's only 3 minutes long), but hear me out for a second. I when I work and write, I tend to just put any old music on so that the time passes quicker. After a while the Score version of Vacant, with the orchestra comes on, and I stop what I'm doing. I'm filled with sadness, the song makes me want to cry my eyes out. I have an emotional connection with this one song which I've just stumbled across on my iTunes. I stop and think for a second, and then go to find the album. This version is slightly darker, and even more beautiful than the Score version, James' voice is flooding with emotion, the one violin (I'm assuming it's a violin) gives the song so much more depth than the full orchestra, combined with the soft chorus in the background and the simplistic, and perfect piano, did make me cry, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. To this day, Vacant is my favourite song of all time. It's filled with emotion, it's deep and meaningful, and gives you an insight into James' soul, even just for 3 minutes.

BONUS

Thank you for sticking with my on my list, I feel the need to apologise for my horrible opinions and all that...So I thought I'd do a piss poor, horribly flat cover of The Count of Tuscany which demonstrates exactly why I need singing lessons. And patience. I deleted the best copy when I couldn't line everything up right.

Interesting choice. Vacant in awesome, but I usually just commit it before SOC because it makes it so much more epic when the heavy section kicks in.

IdoSC

You definitely win the internet. One of the most emotional moments I've heard in music and I dig the personal lyrics. Not my top DT song, but fantastic nonetheless.

BlobVanDam

Great choice! An immensely underrated gem, and perhaps their most emotional song tucked away amongst their heaviest stuff. Wouldn't be in my own top 10, but definitely a worthy choice, and it's great to not see the same old long proggy choices like ACOS.

This has definitely been one of the more interesting top 50s!

Given the rest of your list, great pick for #1.  Definitely my favorite song from TOT.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Zydar

Nice choice for #1. And thanks a lot for doing this list, I've enjoyed it immensely :tup

Silver Tears

Well, it's been an interesting journey Ali.

And your TCOT cover is just brilliant  you have a lovely voice!

Jaffa

Hooray, I was right.  =D  I have to admit, Vacant isn't a favorite of mine by any means, but it is a great song.  I guess I've never really given it enough credit for what it is by itself; I only ever really listen to it as an intro to Stream of Consciousness.  I'll have to listen to it by itself with your lovely write-up in mind, and maybe I'll appreciate it more this time around.  :)

It's been fun following your list, Ali.  I think it's safe to say that this list has been one of the most controversial ones to date, but I love that controversy, and thought this was a very entertaining read.  Great job!

:tup

Oh, and just for the record, I thought the instrument in Vacant was a cello.  I'm probably wrong, but I thought I'd put it out there, for my education if nothing else.

It is a cello. Must have skimmed that bit in the write-up. Such a beautiful, deep tone to it that complements the dark mood of the piece just perfectly.

Mladen

Yeah, this is what happens when teenage girls write their top 50.  ;D

It was a great list overall, a lot of fun indeed.  :tup

iamtheeviltwin

Great and unconventional list without being intentionally "shocking".  It is great to see what part of Dream Theater's music connects the most with different listeners because they have a good breadth of sounds.

Ah, alright, thanks for clarifying.

Also, Ali, did I hear you reference me in your TCoT cover?   :O

Perhaps ;)

I was going to try and reference everyone, including a graphic description of Blob tearing me apart fro placing Octavarium at number 32, but I wanted to keep close to the original lyrics :')

Accurate.  :tup Vacant is a fine song anyway.

And the cover was really very good!
