The "Tickle Section" is fine, but could probably be better placed in the song. Doesn't ruin anything for me, though.

JasonScandopolous

Can we call it something besides "tickle section".  much like calling albums "growers", I am opposed to the phrase, lol.

I've only heard half the album because it just isn't doing anything for me.  I'll listen to the other half when I don't have anything better to do.

It has to be listened to in one sitting, as a whole, at least 3 times for you to really appreciate it. Or at least thats what I found.

It is definately greater than the sum of its parts.

Your problems with your own dirty mind notwithstanding, someone in the band referred to it as the tickle section, and so will I.  =D

I loved it when it leaked. I loved it when I bought my physical copy. I loved it listening to it on the drive up to see them in Washington DC. Right now I still only rate SFAM and I&W ahead of it and Awake on par with it. It absolutely slays the last two albums. I don't see that ever changing for me.

tristl

i have the download now since the 9th of september, i listened to it and only to it until thursday.
every morning i walk my dog for about 2 hours i have my bowery&wilkins headphones on and listen to music.
for 6 weeks it was just adtoe and i never did get really tired of it. since four days i listen to the whole DT catalogue on random, and you know what?! adtoe really holds up well. this morning my iphone in a row did spit out TTT, otboa, ltl and then bai, man i had such a hard on even if it was freezing cold.
adtoe is absolutley top three with changing ranking and changing contestants (i&w, awake, sdoit, sfam).
:heart :hefdaddy :heart :hefdaddy
next february will rock, i will be at least at three DT concerts. :metal :metal

something_wicked

It's a fucking mint album. 'Nuff said.

The crazy part a couple of minutes into the song, listen to it you'll know.

It's still pretty strong for me, although I would admit that it's not as "fresh" as it used to be.

OTBOA: Haven't got the time to play this one ever since the whole album came out as I was too preoccupied with the longer songs. So now I've been playing this one for quite a bit. Still has the classic SFAM-ish DT vibe. (plus because of this I realized that I miss JR's sweeping arpeggio solos, haha)

BMUBMD: Still good for an occasional spin. Didn't like it at first, but now it's a pretty solid track, but it would still be my least favorite track in the album

LNF: Haven't become stale nor more interesting ever since I first listened to it. Still a nice power metal-oriented track that pumps me up whenever I listen to it. The tickle section is still impressive (and crazy), haha.

TITL: Didn't like it at first because of the overly cheesy vibe (as cheesy as ballads can get haha). But now I really dig it for the lyrics; it wasn't really that cheesy to begin with, gotta like how it makes you reflect what you've been doing in your life.

BITS: This one is an excellent song, really loved it the first time I heard it, but it has become stale for me right now, maybe because I was playing it most of the time.

Outcry: To be honest, I hated this at my first listen because I thought it was really a very nice song that was ruined by too much instrumental wankery, much like my take on ANTR and MOLS. But now this has become my absolute favorite in the album. Yes it still has that really complex instrumental at the middle, but somehow it managed to integrate itself in the chaotic revolution theme of the song. At that point I realized the "mangenius" behind it, and up to now I'm still finding new elements in the music because of its consistency and complexity. Maybe the whole song was created in a way to be a "late-bloomer" in the album. Really deserves to be the album anthem for me!

FFH: JL's voice really shines on this one for me. The song's too short to endure the test of time that well, but the way it connects and leads to BAI really makes it worthwhile to listen to every now and then.

BAI: This shares the same fate as my take on BITS; overplayed to the point of stagnation. Don't get me wrong, this one really blew me away when I first listened to it. But somehow the magic wore off quite faster than what I've expected. Maybe it's because of the overplay factor and the way I'm appreciating Outcry right now. Still, this and Outcry would be the two songs in this album that I would keep going back to every now and then as my DT classics.

BTS: This may not be in the likes of Outcry or BAI, but I'm confident enough that I will also keep going back on this one because of the lyrics; I just relate with it too much, haha. Not really as dramatic as FFH, but the lyrics and JR's "cute" solo is enough for this song to have a special place in my heart.

Cyclopssss

I think I agree with just about everything you said, OP.
I think it's an AWESOME album. And I was really dreading it somehow after all the drama.
They proved me wrong and came back swinging. I rate it easily in the top 3 DT albums.

Outouspois

This is clearly the best album of DT. Ehm.... actually this is the first DT album was worth of my money.
I'm not saying that I dislike the rest... but to be honest I only like some songs here and there from other albums.

But this. Lets take for example BITS.
While a standard beginner prog rock band would have been very satisfied with the lines and melodies in
"Whisperer of truth, I trust in you, To make me whole" --  and probably decided that "ok guys we have the chorus there lets go back to A-riff."
But in this song this is just a springboard to a real chorus lines "Sun etc...." Ok now DT goes back to basic A-riff and the chorus is repeated...
What happens now? We have a NEW uplift to another chorus line: comforting, peacful.... "And at last the time has come".... towards the ecstatic "Shaman take my hand...!"  WOWWOWWOW!
10/10

Can I give 11/10 to Outcry? Solo section is out of this world!!!!

I wouldn't give less than nine to any song... well maybe a bit cheesy "FFH" I'd give 7 - reminds me of Lionel Ritchie's "Hello" .

Purchased it 4 days ago, and have listened it about 20 times. In my car, at work, at home, at the gym, everywhere!

And of course, MM is drumgod!  :D

So the fresh feeling is going away.

And I still hold it up in high regard. Very solid work, and it may move up in time.
\o\ lol /o/

GalacticGuitarist87

It is still fresh for me, which is no surprise considering how awesome this album is. I find my favorites changing frequently, and I listen to songs I didn't care for much at first and they became my favorite, it's crazy... This is the Life is my favoritiful song at the moment, beautiful song, rockin' solo too from Petrucci...

red barchetta

Hello everyone.  I don't enjoy that album as much as most of you.  I haven't found any masterpiece song like a Count of Toscany.  And so far I can't name one song that as amazed me.  But  beside Build me up, brake me down wich is terribly boring there are great parts in every song.  But much of the songs seems like a bunch of several parts put together to make songs and it ends up with songs that don't click to me from beginning to end.  I put at least 4 albums before this one.

red barchetta

Hi every one, well after listening to all the albums a couple of time each, I can't say anymore that there are 4 or more albums better than the last one.  And I have rated them on the post that is talking that subject about.

Dublagent66

I almost got through the entire album except for the last song.  What does everybody think of the last song?  Should I go for it?

Are you serious?

tedy

This album is amazing, it's still very strong for me!
Every time I put on OTBOA  :heart, I know that I will go through the whole album  :)
And yes, Mike Mangini is a monster behind the kit!   :metal

kirksnosehair

It's aging well for me.  I still love it and listen to it frequently.

ronrule

Most of it is aging pretty well for me, except for the straight-ahead hi hat work. I've pretty much decided this has no place in prog music period.
