I got this from the Metal Sludge message board.  There are dozens of others bands listed if you are interested.  The actual attendance figure is right under the gross total they brought in so for instance for their LA show they sold 3,675 out of 4,318.  These were the only shows listed.

I was really hoping this thread was gonna feature toys...

Perpetual Change

Those figures seem a lot better than what I'd seen at the PN09 shows.

What are the dollar figures supposed to represent?

Average ticket prices? I have no idea

Sir GuitarCozmo

I believe that's probably gross ticket sales.

For Nokia Theater, the tickets were $65 and $20.  An average of about $43.

$161,910 / 3,675 in attendance = 44

If so, that pretty much fits the model I posted here to a tee:  https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=28683.msg1111141#msg1111141

Madman Shepherd

Yes, the $161,000 figure is the GROSS revenue.

I realise these are only like 3-4 US shows but it seems that DT are definitely bigger shows in Europe.

This is true but keep in mind a few things:

Most shows in Europe only have a few dates per country.  The states are much bigger and spread out making it more difficult for people like me to travel the three hours one way each time DT play a big city.

Most bands don't hit Europe as often making people more likely to put aside any inconvenience and check it out.

Even though the numbers are bigger in Europe (we're assuming), traveling overseas is WAAAYYY more expensive.  Wouldn't doubt if they actually make less on a European tour, and that is after they strip down the stage show a little bit.

hacko

Meh travelling overseas can be as cheap as a 30E flight. It depends on the situation.

Madman Shepherd

When you have a whole crew, stage production, thousands of pounds of equipment to ship, etc...it is not cheap whatsoever

You're very right, I did not think about that. However, I'm 100% certain that they won't strip down the stage show just because they're playing Europe. They've never done it in the past so I don't see why they would start now.

Still, keep in mind that the population in Norway for instance is 3+ million less than in the city of New York (5 vs. more than 8), and the population in the urban area of New York vs. Oslo is 18 million compared to 900000. I think the attendance number in 2009 (Progressive Nation) was about 6500, so I guess they are quite a lot bigger over here.

I think americans is a bit spoiled when it comes to concerts, most people that see DT in Norway travels up to 10 hours, because it's worth it. I'd do it if I didn't live 20 minutes from the venue!

Madman Shepherd

As an American let me just say this....

American's are notoriously lazy.

Then again, most Americans don't get more than two weeks vacation and a handful of sick days and have to worry about paying doctors bills, school, etc...so we have a lot on our plate.  If we had the standard of living most Europeans did, then many more Americans would go the extra mile(s) to see a show in a far off place.

Question: How the hell does Dream Theater make money off touring?

If these figures are to be believed, then the shows are making around $100,000 on average. The band had 24 shows this leg, so let's say their shows made $2,400,000 total.* If they have to pay the venue, then their managers, then their crew, how much is left over for the bandmembers?

*This is not including merchandise, I don't think.

Let's say hypothetically speaking, the band members get 10% of that, so $10,000 a show (I'm completely pulling a number out of my ass here, so I have no idea if they're getting more or less than this). That would mean $2,000 for each guy for each show. How many shows do they do for an entire world tour? 100? Let's say 100 because I'm too lazy too look anything up and use facts.
100 x $2,000 = $200,000 per member per world tour. Considering they tour a 2 year cycle, that would average out to $100,000 a year.

That entire line of reasoning is assumption and simplifying, and not factoring in how the money is used for hiring venues, and travel etc, but I figure it's as a good a starting point as any to think through it.

dongringo

Just getting in on the thread because it's interesting.

Vegvisir

I also wonder what kind of profit is made from the album sales, it has to be substantial. I wouldnt under estimate how much of the meet and greet and VIP package sales are straight profit to the band as well, for the most part they are getting paid for their presence.

PreHilbert

I guess that a good share of DT members' revenues come from gear endorsements. JP endorsing MM almost doubled Ernie Ball/Music Man share of market. JR was the top endorser for Kurzweil and now is one of the top ones for Korg...

I'm sure they get more than that when they do shows in Europe, for instance the tickets prices in Norway is 120$, with attendance on about 6500. I guess it might be more expensive to do a tour overseas, but I'm sure the bigger crowds and ticketprices makes up for it

Blackfield

They're doing what they love the most (I suppose) and get paid a substantial sum of money. I don't think you'll hear them complaining. But it would be interesting to see just how much they're making.  :corn

Heres a few more...these are some lower numbers from smaller markets.  Makes me think they could do respectable numbers in my midsize Iowan metropolitan area.

Wedding bands make 10K.  I think DT probably earns between 20-50K per show, depending on market.
