An Interesting Pattern I've Noticed

Going over the discussion among what people consider their holy trinity and now a new thread mentioning the Big Four of Dream Theater (I&W, Awake, SFAM, SDOIT), a pattern emerges. When ADTOE was released, the general consensus of this forum (and most people I've talked to outside the forum) have said it's their best album since SDOIT. If so, according to the pattern, we have can look forward to DT12 as being another amazing Dream Theater album.

Images and Words then Awake
Scenes From A Memory then Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
A Dramatic Turn of Events then DT12

Based off of the results of the "Favorite Three Albums" poll that I made regarding everyone's personal DT Holy Trinity, the general consensus was the I&W, SFAM, and SDOIT combo with ADTOE and Awake following close behind. Coincidence or is there a pattern here?

Thoughts?

If DT's 12th album will be strong because DT's 11th album was, does that mean that Roadrunner will recruit Desmond Child to help the band out on its 13th album?

The point is that Dream Theater seems to be very consistent is following a very, very good album with another very good album, all of which i've showed in the OP to be albums that are widely loved by 90-95% of the fanbase (the vast majority).

I was joking, of course, and I understand your point, though in all seriousness I think all bets are off for DT's future albums' adhering to a pattern of any sort.

That's where I'd disagree with you. With only the drummer changing in the band, the dynamic actually hasn't changed very much. I expect Mangini to build off of the core of the band and for them to make another very good album.

theseoafs

All signs are currently pointing to Mangini helping them write the new album's material along with the rest of the group, and with Jordan and JP already having insinuated that MP's absence was the primary reason they were able to experiment a bit with this album's structure (ending with a ballad, using electronic drums, etc.), I wouldn't be surprised personally if they continue to push boundaries. This is all speculation, however.

That's assuming people regard SDOIT highly.

Orbert

No need to "assume".  SDOIT is pretty highly regarded.

gmillerdrake

I like the theory! And I like that the next album has the 'wild card' of Mangini....and just what....if any....type of creativity he can add to the mix. One would assume he could only improve upon and help build the product. But maybe JP and the gang decide that they liked the way this one turned out so they limit his role. I don't believe they'd do that but you never really know.

Very much this. I made a poll about everyone's holy trinity with a poll and SDOIT was the third highest behind I&W and SFAM, but ahead of ADTOE and then Awake. As a general consensus, it's very highly regarded.

Perpetual Change

To be fair, every time something new is release 75 percent of the forum consider it the best thing since SDOIT.

When has DT ever NOT release anything amazing after something amazing?
