Yeah because wearing headphones to a dinner is waaaay more dis-affectionate than recording and touring with another band and wanting a 5 year break.

It has to have been John Myung. The only other person MP has complained about in the last year and a half is JLB, and I doubt it was him wih the iPod.

Are you sure?

hadn't seen this - wonderful!

More importantly, did MP give more details on the project with John Sykes?  :metal

As much as this goes against the core of my principles, I can't help but almost WANT there to be an official "Prophets Of War Techno Remix".

We should make a petition to have Blob come up with the whole thing!

I disagree. He was doing A7X a favor while DT was taking a break, and he wanted a break and left the band for it. That's where his mindset is. Wearing headphones to a dinner is kind of rude and when you have band members doing that in comparison to other bands who don't do that and participate in discussion etc, then you start to wonder if you're in the right band.

I agree with this.  And for people that don't...was this a special dinner?  Mike birthday dinner?  If so then yeah, maybe a bit uncalled for.  If not, why does it matter?  Sometimes people have had a bad day and want to just bury themselves in music or whatever.

I fail to see how this is a big deal at all.

The fact of the matter is, you can be upset at MP for his decision or you can be upset with DT for continuing without him, but in the end, DT made their choice and Mike made his whether he regrets it now or not.

Regardless of his reasons for leaving, he now doesn't have to worry about going to dinner while someone is listening to an ipod and DT has had a rebirth of sorts.  I'm content with how it turned out.

My main though is that his friendship with MP could have played a role in him posting the rumor. It is very clear that Eddie isn't a DT fan but rather an MP fan. That's why the whole thing is aggravating, the band was close to announcing Mangini and than Eddie posts a rumor.

And I know you find that stance to be laughable, but I could care less.

And I took that GIF as a personal attack, or at least posted in a mocking way

lol personal attack by a dumb gif cmon now. I think you could be right about ET I wouldnt be surprised either way.

I didn't appreciate it.

Anyways, yeah, nothing would surprise me

Mike is a decent drummer and all, but he's far from the best. That list should've included Mangini if they're putting Portnoy, but we all know why that didn't happen. I guess that's why he thinks he's never in the wrong; the people that surround him exaggerately praise every single thing that he does.

I bet those guys from That Metal Show don't know who Mike Manginni is?
The Better interview would have the guys from DT on the show.

So what do we have in this thread about MP on TMS?

1) Eddie Trunk may or may not be a douche, depending on who you are.
2) MP "shouldn't have" remarked about the iPod incident.  On a show where he was being interviewed about what led him to that point.  Sure.  God forbid he speak his mind any more or ever again.

This thread had great potential, but turned into a shitfest pretty quick.  I'm starting to feel like there isn't a f*cking thing MP can do to please anybody.  Almost nothing but complaints, no matter what he does.  "Well, hey, he's a public figure, and I'm passionate about the music I love, so I can bitch all I want!"  Yeah.  You can.  Doesn't necessarily mean you should ("If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"), but of course, everyone takes it as license to bitch.  Whatever.  I think he's gotten unfairly heaped upon by LOTS of people here and the mods are (mostly) the only ones who seem to notice or care.  I find it upsetting, and hope that things in DT-land will sometime soon settle down to some degree or normalcy where people don't have to be all "FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU" whenever MP's brought up or whenever he says anything.  Just my $0.02.  For the record, I wasn't directing this post at anyone in particular.

As far as this episode of TMS?  I loved it.  I was excited to see the Sykes interview segment.  Those guys on TMS always make things humorous and I love that.  I thought it was an excellent episode and I don't see anything wrong with anything Mike said.  He spoke honestly and I really enjoyed hearing what he had to say and his take on their top 5 list.

Well, people like controversy and drama. And if MP made some passive remark about an iPod and it's not a big deal.... If it's possible to TURN that into a big deal, people WILL do that.

That and I think a lot of people try to antagonize MP as a means to get over the fact that he meant so much to them as a member of DT and when he left, a lot of people might want to say, "Well... If he's the bad guy, then at least I can be happy that he left."

Not saying it's right. Just saying that's life.

Sir GuitarCozmo

A good point.  You're right, it doesn't make it at all right or appropriate, but it's a possible explanation I hadn't considered.

A basic tenant of interpersonal relations is that if you have a problem with someone, to raise it with them.  To say it behind a person's back has the potential to damage that person's reputation.  Maybe JP/JLB/JR/JM (because, now all the band has been associated with this story) was wrong to do this, but if this broadcast was listened to by people who don't know the band, then this will be one of the first things that they hear about DT.  That is a problem.

MP has stated over and over again that he was the "leader" of DT.  I equate that with him being the boss.  And I have worked for people who have said stuff behind my back.  And my reaction was this too - to zone out, and listen to music, and to do my own work the best that I could because that was what I could control.  We don't know the other side of the story - maybe JP/JLB/JR/JM said that they didn't want to go, and maybe they were forced?  Maybe they were tired?  Did MP raise this with the member at the time?  We don't know.  But if he hadn't, then a broadcast is not the place to do it.

Yeah, this is why I said something on the matter.
Mike Portnoy just seems to talk to interviewers and television show hosts like he is in a confined room with nobody else around, and the person he is talking to isn't an interviewer or television show host. I know he knows better, I know he knows what he said will get out, in context or out of context. But you know what, I'm glad he said something about the iPod hullaballoo, because it created some sort of dramatics that the fans can discuss.. It gave us something interesting to talk about.

With that being said, I think the entire ordeal is just old and tired... Lay it to rest already!
I would be a content man to never talk or hear about Mike Portnoy versus Dream Theater ever again, and yet I still get sucked into these discussions, for reasons unbeknownst to me.  :lol

Damn! VH1 is blocked to Australia, or that episode anyway, they showed me a clip of Paranormal Activity 3 (which does look good!)

Australia is only up to Season 7 Episode 5 tonight and they do Best Metal Drummers and MP does not rate at all, is the new poll Best Rock Drummers?
I would love to see JP on That Metal Show but with Eddie's relationship with Mike, I doubt that will happen, shame though.

I remember when Eddie announced it, I thought it would be Mike's website, but either way at that point didn't we all just want some announcement already?

In a few years when we all look back, I believe it will look as though Mike was replaced really quickly, but it was torture for that few months of rumours flying around.

With the comment made about the ipod thing (which I won't see for another year) why even mention it?, that is such a trivial thing, but as anyone knows after a while the smallest things can set you off about somebody who is already annoying the hell out of you.  ::)

I hope MP is happy, he is obviously very busy....it looks as though everything has worked out for everybody.

Mike Portnoy

Hi everyone,
Glad to see some nice, positive comments in this thread...(yes, really...I actually saw a few!!)   ;D

I think anybody that SAW this episode (with their own eyes) will agree that I was very heart-felt when I touched upon some of this subject matter...

Please remember it's very easy to pass judgement on quotes being taken out of context or being paraphrased by somebody else....(which is what I'm seeing elsewhere in this thread)

Please try to catch this episode YOURSELF and hopefully it can clear some of the air about how much I love and miss the guys and how much DT means to me....when I speak about these incidents they are NOT AT ALL in a vindictive or controversial way, they are in an incredibly honest & heart-felt way....

Perhaps seeing this interview with your own two eyes and hearing it with your own two ears will help make that slightly clearer than the heresay that is so easy to get lost in on the internet...

Thanks everyone,
Onward & upward!  :tup

I thought you were pretty down-to-earth and likable on the episode, Mike. You definitely spoke from your heart and without any sort of negativity or anything that could be controversial, from what I saw. Looking forward to your future projects.

Well, actually Mike, you are right... I only saw the second half of the episode, after you stopped talking about Dream Theater.
And, I am assuming a large portion of us haven't seen the episode yet.
So, I was basing what happened in the first half by what I read before getting the real facts... Never a good choice.

I'm still dumbfounded as to why I didn't check out a re-run of the episode before saying anything on the subject, but I just got caught in the moment. I'm sure you carried yourself as you always do, but it's hard to decipher the way you did carry yourself when what was said is not only summarized, but in text form.

Thanks for clearing that up, I'll make sure to check out the full episode, then post again with a more valid response this time.  :lol

Waiting to see the episode online somewhere... I think vh1 puts them up after a few days.

In the meantime, while Mike is in this thread, I have a serious (but slightly off-topic) question for him:

When are we going to hear about MMPLM?!?! Are you going to tour? So excited to hear this music it's not even funny.

Cranky

And, holy crap, if it wasn't for watching part of this episode,
I wouldn't have ever found out about Blue Murder...
I looked them up just to see what all the fuss was about this John Sykes  character...

Not only is he an amazing guitar player, but an amazing singer.
I am very excited to see what him and Mike come up with!!!!

Is it any way to see the episode online? Because I don't think they show That Metal Show in Norway..   :-\

Perpetual Change

I'm not going to watch the show because I'm not a fan of That Metal Show, nor am I a huge fan of either of the guests.

With that said, though, I don't see why Eddie shouldn't have spread the rumor about Mangini being in DT. Eddie is "the press" and DT are an "organization." It's usually a bad sign when someone from the press is too cozy with the wants and needs a particular organization.  Eddie obviously has no obligation to Dream Theater, nor should he.

I guess you could argue that the problem isn't him leaking the rumors about Mangini; it's him cozying up to Mike through the whole thing. I won't make that claim myself, but I certainly won't argue it's wrong either.

kirksnosehair

I saw the episode yesterday.  *shrug*

Wasn't anything new or groundbreaking in terms of Mike's side of events.

About Eddie, I agree with Perpetual Change.

Coz, you are dead on. Just because you have a right to, doesn't make it right to.
I thought MP's part of the interview was great, especially the "two moments of clarity".
It was refreshing to "see" MP.

I've followed John Sykes a bit over the years, especially early on with Tygers, Thin Lizzy, and Whitesnake. I don't remember being that nuts about Blue Murder (I have to go back and rediscover them), and certainly never followed the travelling Thin Lizzy show that he fronted.
I've never seen him interviewed, but his perfonality was NOT what I expected. I really expected this perky spunkful guy.
The guy seemed half in the bag. Maybe he's always like that.

I don't know what all the fuss is about naming the bass player....
