Now that ADTOE has been out for a while, people seem to really enjoy it, calling it the best DT album in a long time. Which is great, and I agree that it's an awesome album.

Since I'm a relatively new member of this forum, I wasn't around for the release of BC&SL, SC and everything before that. So I'm wondering how the reactions were to those albums when they came out? Were they also praised the way ADTOE is?

Please tell me what it was like a long time ago, in the ancient ages of 2009 and 2007  :)

I don't recall them being praised like ADTOE, however the initial opinion was higher than they are now. I expect that ADTOE will settle down a bit as time goes on, but I also expect it's opinion over time to remain quite high, more so than the last few.

But me, I like them all. :tup

The Silent Cody

I don't remember how it was with SC, but I remember that when I first time was listening to BC&SL I was thinking that this is the best album ever.... when I was listening to ADTPE for the first time I was thinking - what a mess :P now it's opposite ;) actually no, I don't think that BC&SL is a mess, but level of excitement has fall down very very much.

I was around when BC&SL came out, and I remember it was fondly embraced. People seemed to love The Count of Tuscany and A Nightmare to remember for the most part, and I also loved it when it came out. Today, I like it probably just as much as I did back hen, although some songs grew on me, while I got tired of few others.

I think both were generally positive.. Neither have withstood the test of time for me. I remember rating BC&SL up there in the top 4 DT albums (over Awake I think, WTF?) when it first came out... You learn a lot when the newness of an album wears out. That's exactly why I have reserved calling ADTOE a masterpiece, while just calling it a great album that I like a lot.

Ultimetalhead

I remember putting it right up there with SFAM and SDOIT. Now it's most definitely in the middle of the pack.

Zantera

I can't say about SC since I joined in 2009 (?) or something like that, but I was here when BC&SL came out.
From what I remember, it got pretty good reactions, I recall many people praising it, and saying that it was DT at their 'finest'. (Maybe not as in comparing it to their classic albums, but you catch my drift)

Personally I liked BC&SL when it came out, but the whole album got stale very fast for me.
It probably sunk from an initial 4/5 rating to 2/5 in just a few weeks, mostly because most of the songs became mediocre very fast for me.
I still dig "A Nightmare to Remember", I like the odd-vibe it has, and I do think it's one of the more unique tracks by DT this last decade.
I do however think that it was a bit over the top, the "DAY AFTER DAY"-section was pretty meh, and I feel like the song could have been shorter, but again, songs being too long for their own good is my main fault with most DT has done since 6DOIT.
Anyhow, I don't really care for any of the other songs, and I haven't really listened to the album in a year (at least), because ANTR is the only song I still enjoy.
In my spare time I make music! Check it out. :)

I was there for BC&SL and I remember it got praised musically quite a bit but lyrically it was slated. People found Count Of Tuscany to be very silly and moments like the "Day After Day..." in Nightmare also got people talking. It was praised though but not to the level that ADToE has been.

I think ADTOE is a breath of fresh air. I loved the shorter songs and the ballads.
My problem with BCSL was the releases of the covers before the record. I seem the listen to them more than the main CD.

I remember with BC&SL I thought the cover CD was better than the real album. I still have that opinion today.
With Sc I thought; whatthefuck this is cool. (I was younger then), but I'll still rate SC as a good album. BC&SL, for me is, frankly, DT's worst.

I know for me, while I was very positive with both of the previous releases, even in the beginning, there were a couple of songs I either didn't like or didn't connect with very much.  On SC, I never really liked Prophets and TMOLS.  And Repentance, while brilliant, has a few aspects that really take away a lot of replay value for me.  On Black Clouds, while I can appreciate both the music and lyrics of The Best Of Times, I just don't connect with the song.  And while I don't really have a desire to skip them, I never pick up the album out of a desire to listen to Wither or AROP.

I realize that the newness of ADTOE still hasn't worn off yet.  But this album is different.  This is the first one where I really don't dislike even a single song.  In fact, there isn't even a single song I would consider mediocre.  They're all solid, and quite a few are stellar.  Even after this album has a chance to cool off, I doubt it will fall very far in my rankings.

For some reason, I remember people saying that Systematic Chaos was their best album in a while when it came out. Same for Black Clouds & Silver Linings and, obviously, same for A Dramatic Turn of Events. Could be wrong.

Critically, I think BC&SL was received better than ADTOE.

It's funny how our own perceptions color our recollections: I disliked BC&SL very much (still do), and I remember a very divided forum. People either loved or hated BC&SL. ADTOE seems much more universally loved to me.

I wouldn't quite say universal, but definitely a huge majority. But it's probably a good sign that even the people who don't love it don't seem to hate it. The opinions range from average to best DT album ever, but not many that are lower than that.

coffees for closers

From what I recall this album is getting way more praise over all, and I am still shocked it didn't do better in the charts.

The biggest difference between SC, BC&SL and ADTOE reaction is that both SC and BC&SL had many haters I remember there used to be a member here on DTF called Marsek who was really extreme hater of SC. I can't recall any hatered towards ADTOE. The worst opinion I saw yet was meh kind of opinion. So of course that ADTOE won't be loved as much as it is right now after few months but based on current hatered amount I think ADTOE has good chance to age well.
