jesus christ, its such a good song

its one of the two songs where i found it the most difficult to absorb, the other being trial of tears, so after hearing it a few times, i would normally skip it in my playlist.

im obligated to do extensive listening when im exploring new albums, and when i started with awake, i loved the whole album, except scarred.
took me a few days to realize that it was THE BEST SONG IN THE WORLD. it first it just sounded like a failed frankenstein experiment with different song segments jumbled together, but dAAYUMM,  i can't believe how it all flows together, its amazing!

i recently stumbled upon it in my library a few days ago and i havent listened to that particular track for a few good months and when i played it ,wow, just wow, i can't believe i have forgotten such a beautiful track
it has an awesome solo, top notch vox , seriously great drumming and a great and atmospheric outro. i don't see how anyone can dislike it!

i love kevin

It's not just a good song...it's Dream Theater's best song. :tup :tup

I don't know about "best" but it is definitely Top 10 material.  Simply fantastic, and nothing else like it in their catalogue.

BlobVanDam

Worst song on Awake, and quite possibly my least favourite DT song this side of WDADU. A muddled mess of a song once it gets into it.

Some things never change.  :lol

Love ya, Blob.

I remember reading it somewhere that James LaBrie loves to sing this song very much. Before that, this was like a passing song for me whenever I listen to Awake in its whole length, but after learning that James LaBrie loves to sing this song, I tried to listen to listen to it in a different way I did before. Now it is already on my favourite list of DT songs. I have to thanks him for that.

A great song, not my absolute favourite or anything but definitely my favourite fro Awake. I never understood the whole "Love it or Hate it" thing it seems to have going on. Not that I'd expect everyone to have the same opinion of it or anything, but I just don't see what makes a fair amount of DT fans think it's absolutely terrible while others love it, as opposed to a more normal distribution.

Maybe the inbetweeners just don't feel strongly enough to post about it? Or just don't get noticed because they're so full of neutrality.

TAC

Scarred sits as my #3 DT song. I love it. Loved it from Day 1. When Awake came out, my ride to work was about a half hour. I played Voices, Scarred, & SDV to and from work for about 6 months!
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

I respectfully disagree.  Best song on Awake IMHO.  It's ok though, we all still like ya Blob.

Pols Voice

Another Scarred thread, another instance of Blobhate.

Top 3 DT song.

First half is gold.

Second half is dirt.

namgalsipsclar

I think its really good, but its the only song on awake that i honestly cannot remember how it goes, and so im never compelled to listen to it. But its one of those songs that when i do listen to it, its friggin awesome

Zook

I love Scarred as well. Amazing song and fun to sing along to.... In my car..... with the music so loud I can't hear myself...

My #5. Nothing to dislike about it.

Hal Incandenza

In Ħ's honor, I'm going to listen to nothing but the second half of Scarred for the rest of the afternoon.

I am falling in love again and again with James everytime I listen to it......

It definitely grew on me a lot. A lot of the songs on Awake did. When I first heard the album I was underwhelmed beyond belief. But now, it's really enjoyable for me. Especially the songs that took their time to grow on me like Caught in a Web and Scarred.

Maybe New Millennium will eventually grow on me too.

This, but second best song on Awake and possibly Top 10 material. I used to not care for this song, but when it clicked, it really did click. Pretty much all of Awake was a slow grower, starting off at 8th or 9th on my list of favorite DT albums and growing to become second only to Images and Words.

tweeg

My first copy of Awake was the Canadian cassette version, which didn't have Scarred on it for some inexplicable reason. The first time I heard it was when I bought the CD a year or two afterwards. I remember liking the song, especially the "LTL-esque" outro, but I remember thinking most of the other songs on the album were better. I felt it was a poor man's Voices at the time.

gm5k

One of their best for sure.  Also has one of Petrucci's most overlooked solos.  It's so well written IMO.  I think it's probably a victim of the song just being so jam packed with other awesome stuff as well  ;D

True, one of JP's best.

DAT OUTRO.

Yeah, and although it seems a bit odd, it also seems to fit perfectly in some strange way.

Nofire

Scarred. Is. Awesome.

The OIALT version of Scarred was one of the very first DT songs I ever heard, and I fell in love with it immediately. After a year or two, I heard the Awake version, and my mind exploded when the solo section came in, having no idea it use to be there. I miss the intro guitar solo that they do on OIALT though in the studio version. I wish they would do a live version that has both solos in it (CiM doesn't really do the trick for me, even though that is an awesome version as well).

Marion Crane

I'm with Blob. Prolly my least fav DT track....next to Anna Lee

FlyingBIZKIT

Top 30 or 40, nothing more.

djentlemen

One thing about the solo was that it had so much potential, don't get me wrong, its a great solo,
DAT solo sound amazingly awsome , after it kicks in from the that awesome freestyle /Jam section.
But after the first 10.seconds, the inevitable jp shred follows.  It had such a great tune to expand and developed, I felt it went wasted. None the less, its still great
