Two of the classic DT greats. Im going to say that they are are two ends of the spectrum when it comes to light and dark. Awake being dark and Images and words being light. I also think that while Awake is darker is it still just as progressive as Images and words.

The Letter M

IAW. But it's close...

Pull Me Under VS. 6:00
Another Day VS. Innocence Faded
Take The Time VS. Caught In A Web
Surrounded VS. Space-Dye Vest
Metropolis Part 1 VS. Erotomania/Voices/The Silent Man
Under A Glass Moon VS. The Mirror/Lie
Wait For Sleep VS. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
Learning To Live VS. Scarred

Two different versions of DT perfection...I can't choose.  So yea...Kevin Moore.

I'm glad to see I&W is slaughtering Awake so far. My faith on the DT fanbase has been restored.

That's a bit extreme.

AWAKE ALL THE WAY FUCKERS!

HAHA
Images and Words. Can't even remember the last time I ever listened to Awake.

reza_122

I choose IAW,
Awake is the most boring DT album ever ...

images and its not even close. the only DT song on images that isnt generally accepted as a classic is surrounded. the only classic DT song on awake is erotomania. there are other great songs, but no other classics on awake.

I agree with your vote but not with the rest of your post. The whole AMBI suite is considered a classic, Scarred is a favorite of many people, and SDV has that "never been played - last song by Kevin Moore" aura. Although as you said, almost every song on I&W is classic DT, except for WFS (unless it is put together with LTL), Surrounded and probably Another Day. All of which are still very good.

i always pair up wait for sleep with learning to live. another day, is a classic DT song since but i see how you could argue otherwise. its their best ballad with one of petrucci's best solos. yeah i see how you could argue against it, though i think those 2 things and its popularity qualify it. the awake songs are very good but not classics. space dye vest has been played live recently but labrie and rudess. its not a classic dt song, though very good. only erotomania is the standout classic DT prog metal song.

Obfuscation

I&W. Awake has no chance at all to ever catch up to I&W.

The popularity contest argument is kind of funny when you consider we're talking about a band like Dream Theater  ;D  Also, I think Voices is a "classic"

The answer for me used to be Images for a long time, but there are some songs on there I can't listen to all the way through anymore on a regular basis without wanting to move on to the next song.  (PMU, Another Day, UAGM)  ...I can still listen to all of Awake and never get bored, so I guess it's aged much better with me over the last 15 years or so    wow im getting old  :lol

That's a bit unfair to Images though as I just played it way too much over the years.  A victim of my obsession  :-\

...its popularity amongst the FANS OF DREAM THEATER, not popularity to the general market for pop music.

DTF is bi-polar, seriously. This same thread was made a few months ago, and the results were almost dead even... now they're the complete opposite?

Let me call a psychiatrist for DTF.

;D I know was just joking around.

Vajra, DT fans are bipolar in general.  Curious to see the Awake vs. ADTOE poll again in a year...

Wasn't exactly dead even. I'm sure more votes will even it up a bit, but IaW won comfortably anyway.

I like Awake right not a LOT more than I liked it when I first heard it. At first, I wasn't too crazy about it at all...
Of course, I loved Images and Words from the start and I love it even more now than I did when I first heard it.

So yeah, Images and Words all the way.

?

Awake easily. Both albums are perfect but I prefer the darker and more atmospheric sound of Awake.

Sketchy

I love both, but I&W is just so... fun.

nikatapi

Tough choice for me since those are probably my favorite DT albums.
But i went with I&W.

No contest here for me, Images & Words is my #1 Dream Theater album, Awake is #5

hefdaddy42

Their two best albums by far.  I went with Awake, but it isn't #1 and #2, it is #1A and #1B.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Metrovarium

Images and Words by quite a bit. However, Awake is my second favorite album. I really like I&W

Awake might just be my favorite Dream Theater album. While I&W generally have more songs that I'd like to hear in a live setting, Awake has ONE thing that I haven't found on any other DT album yet and that is atmosphere. The songs really makes you think and it feels like you're walking in a dark forest all alone when listening to it, it's really moody. That's what I like about it, you feel something (not including the "holy crap, this is good"-feel). Also, It really feels as if the songs belong to each other where with the later albums, it's just one song to another. The Awake songs have similar sound as if they were telling a story, all closely resembling one another. It has this sorta grey-ish sound to it that I really like.

FlyingBIZKIT

I used to like I&W better, but now I like Awake better.
