My wife loves DT but I am such a maniac when a new DT album drops, I play them over and over and over..........

So I asked my wife if she wanted me to add it to her I Pod and she said, "Why, I hear it every time I step in your car!"   :lol  So true but too bad for her.  I can't get enough of ADTOE.

So how is your obsession affecting your significant other?

My girlfriend actually digs them now (thank god).

I mean, sometimes I think she gets a bit overwhelmed, but for the most part she's a good sport about it. She and I are seeing them tomorrow, and she seems pretty excited.  ;)
My latest concept album "IV: Timber" IS OUT NOW!

My girlfriend seemed to really like Scenes from a Memory.  I specifically remember her enjoying "Fatal Tragedy" and "Finally Free."

I think I've overplayed them, though, because she can't take Dream Theater seriously anymore.  She specifically cites James LaBrie's voice as a deterrent (she has about as much respect for Neal Morse as a vocalist, and similar objections).  I don't think there's one song she's liked that's not on SFaM.

She has great taste in music, and actually likes King Crimson, Rush, and Kansas, so I don't think the prog element itself is a deterrent.  To be honest, I don't think Symphonic Prog or Prog Metal (or metal in general) are her cup of tea.  Maybe a bit of a  shame, because Dream Theater and Spock's Beard are a couple of my favorite bands, but it isn't that important. ;)

Also, I'm not obsessed with Dream Theater...at least, I hope not.  I'm an enthusiast.  I tend to divide my time evenly between my favorite bands.  So maybe this thread doesn't quite apply to me.

King Postwhore

Well I'm talking about when an album like the new DT comes out.  I do this with Rush and Porcupine Tree all the time too.

My Wife AND Daughter said they're both over DT. I guess maybe I wore them out as well. But what do they know? ;D

johncal

Do you think we should start a support group thread for those poor significant others? I'd love to spy on that.

When I was first courting my girlfriend about three years ago we were talking about music and I mentioned that my favourite band was Dream Theater. She said to me "Dream Theater's good, but I prefer Liquid Tension Experiment." It was at that exact moment that I knew she was the one for me. Most people have never even heard of Dream Theater, but she's a fan of a side project? We've since seen DT twice together and she saw them once by herself while away at school.

Having a wife that loves Dream Theater is second only to a wife that likes _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Infinite Cactus

My last 4 girlfriends all liked or loved DT. I actually have an mp3 of my ex singing About To Crash somewhere. Here's the rundown

C really liked the symphonic stuff
B Liked all of it but especially 8VM, WDADU, and I&W. We also broke up 2 days after SC came out. Then got back together
R Liked I&W because she liked Rush.
L(current) Likes it all . She's starting to get into Awake really heavy now. She is a big Genesis, fan.

A side note is I don't actively try to get them into my music. I just listen to it and they usually say, hey this is pretty fucking awesome, let me borrow your Dream Theater, Van Halen, Genesis, etc.

Another_Won

My wife bought the tickets for this tour!  She has no idea about how awesome DT is but she supports me and that's why I will  be there when they perform!  I think she might come around given some time . . .. . .

Unfortunately the wifey HATES prog music. I tried to turn her on to DT once when we were driving to Kentucky to visit her parents. I played SFAM and attempted to explain the concept, but her only comment was "I can't believe you like this stuff".
I've just given up. It doesn't matter what group. Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, Riverside, etc. And don't even think about Opeth.
Oh well, can't have everything.

Yeah, same here.  My wife's two biggest complaints about DT are (a) there's no consistent beat (she likes techno, for example), and (b) she HATES HATES HATES JLB's voice.

I try desperately to explain to her "Honey, you see, this music isn't made from the same formula that pop music is, so a lot of times you don't get it on your first listen, but really, just listen 5 or 6 times and you'll love it!!"  At which point she gives me a look as if to say "You know... you're a giant dork, and that's why I love you... but I'm never going to like your shitty music, okay?"

*sigh*

LieLowTheWantedMan

I have a habit of getting with girls who dig DT, so woot.

I can certainly relate with this. My GF does like DT, just not as much as me. A couple days after the new album came out I asked her what she thought of it, and she had only listened to it once. Unbelievable. lol.

PreHilbert

My wife loves DT. She was at 3 of the 5 concerts I went to. (she fainted during the ToT tour one in Milan (Assago), due to the lack of air and smelly metalers around her... she liked the show anyway). The last one we went to was 2005, Octavarium tour, in Ascoli (an open air show, which is much better for us short people). Now we live between Italy and  the US (Bloomington, Indiana) but this year our kid is too young to come, (only 5 months old...) so no Chicago date for us... maybe next year??
She listened to DT during all of her pregnancy, and when my son was born you could tell that he liked DT above anyting else. Oddly enough he likes Meshuggah and Beatles too. Can't stand Symphony X though... just like my wife...

Well, I can't complain too much...

Rob801

Hmmm, My wife and DT  :\.

I think she likes them more than she'll admit but on the surface she doesn't like them and we'd practically get in a fight every time I wanted to listen to them in the car when we're together (although that has been a little better lately).

That's partially my fault I guess because back in 2005 we took a 7 week vacation to the States for the first time since we moved to Denmark (in 96'). I had just picked up Octavarium the day before we left and I played it almost non stop the whole time we were there  :metal. I have a tendency to do that with every new DT release but this time she couldn't get away (there were many hours in the car driving between LA and Oregon, where my Dad lived, and LA and Vegas/Henderson, where my Mom lives, plus all the day trips we took).

So I guess I kind of dug my own grave .

That being said she is from Denmark, had never heard anything but Pop music before she met me, and is 7 years younger than me so she didn't grow up with the influence of music (prog and heavy) from the early to late 70's and 80's that was such a big influence on myself and DT.

I slowly got her converted to a lot of my musical taste but she will NEVER like Rush (luckily for her I hardly listen to them anymore... which I never thought would happen... but that's another story), and although I think she likes DTs music, she's another one that can't stand JLBs voice (mostly live).

But we've been together since 90' and married for  almost 20 years (fuck that sounds strange) so I guess she'll survive a little (ok a LOT) more DT, and I'll survive her complaining about them (although I must say she hasn't had a single negative comment about the new album!)... maybe she is finally learning after 22 years... :heart  ;D

TheSilentHam

So I kept her up too late last week listening to ADTOE, watching the OTBOA video and other DT youtube.  She overslept and was late for work the next morning.  So I have backed off... a little.

Phantasmatron

Usually my girlfriend patiently puts up with my music and she even likes a decent amount of it.  Dream Theater is not a band that has clicked for her.

But when I went into fanboy mode over ADTOE and was all "OMFG THE NEW ALBUM COMES OUT TODAY I MUST HAVE IT NAO" she understood, went with me when I bought it, and listened attentively as I blasted it in the car on the way home.

Uh, but now when she gets in the car with me she really, really, REALLY wants me to play something else.  I think my grace period has expired.

Cranky

Me and my lovely girlfriend are able to listen to Dream Theater together all the time, she never has a problem with it.
We have been going together for almost 3 years, and are both 19.

Actually, I think it's pretty much the general consensus that all the guys here sat down early on in their relationship with the significant other, and talked to them about your favourite band, Dream Theater, and how much you love them, and showed them a select set of songs with their fingers crossed for acceptance.

So, the time came for ME to sit her down, and the first song I decided to show her was...Gosh, I can't even remember. The first song I showed her was These Walls, yeah, that! Anyways, and it ended up on her iPod the next day without telling me, I thought that was cute. Then the second was... Octavarium, we listened to the whole thing in her car (She has an incredible sound system in hers) on the way to somewhere that was a ways away, and she never once said anything about the long intro, or the fact the song was never ending.. She enjoys it when I play DT in her car, and she respects that it's my favourite band, and that I have a lot of love for them.

She kind of went through my library of their songs and put a couple more on her iPod, like Endless Sacrifice and Take Away My Pain.

I showed her the new CD when it first came out, played it in her car, and I was almost crying in excitement from my obviously apparent excitement, and she really liked all the heavier songs, and Far From Heaven. And, she wanted to come to the concert on Tuesday, the 27th, but it just could work out that way... She says that she really wants to see my favourite band live.

Well, I don't mean to brag, but I had this keyboard and computer, so what the fuck.

Hal Incandenza

My wife likes DT.  She hasn't heard the whole album yet, but has really liked four out of the five songs I've played for her.  I'm careful not to overexpose her so she gets sick of them; we only ever listen to music in the car on long trips, and while I come up with playlists regularly at home, I don't go to the DT well too often.  She probably requests them as often as I play them.

Sixtease

This is a big topic for me. My GF does not like Dream Theater and we have the consensus that I don't put it on when she's around. She just can't stand the widdly diddly parts. She's also pregnant now, so she has heavier mood swings and I try to take more consideration.

But the day ADTOE appeared in my mailbox, I just wanted to listen to it. We were in the bed, I was staring into the booklet, she was craving for attention, but tried to be cooperative. Then after she held through OTBOA and BMUBMD, Lost not Forgotten came and the crazy intro. She just got up, ran away and exploded.

Since then, things settled down a bit, and I really needed to hear BITS after the morning sex. So I asked her if it was OK to put one song on, she said yes, but if she can't stand it, I'd put it down. I agreed and put it there. She said maybe for positive conditioning, I could give her a hand job while we listen, so after all, it was a very nice experience for the both of us. :-)

Wow, I would be really gutted if a wife/gf hated my music to such an extent.

Lowdz

My other half can't stand it. She likes alot of my melodic rock stuff (80s stuff) but she hates DT when the widdly widdly starts, and the odd meter riffing.

My kids (4 and 2- their ages not their names!) love them. Zach was playing on my guitar and making a racket and said he was Dream Theater. They still can't do the shaman's burp though.

Seriously though, sounds like you have awesome kids  :tup

Liberation

She's not as much of a crazy fan like me but still likes them very much. We've been to the concert together.

TAC

The Lovely Mrs. TAC has seen DT 8 times with me from 1996.
She's never been a fan, but respected their playing. When we saw them play at Gigantour, the volume and the "metal" setlist really turned her off. Then we watched MP throw a shit fit at the 06 Orpheum show, and she was like" I'll never buy anything from his website again!" Haha
She has definitely picked up on the metal leanings and "imbalance" that has been a common complaint around here. The last straw for her was the Palladium last year. Again a metalized setlist and the place was definitely NOT her scene.
We've got seats near the front of the balcony in two weeks. I suspect she'll like this a lot more.

She's fascinated with JM. She likes hearing the bass and likes his hair..haha

We actually met Mr. & Mrs. King at the show  last summer. :tup

Thanks, yeah they are most of the time! You should hear the 2 year old (Alex- after Mr Lifeson) sing KISS' God Gave Rock n Roll To YOu in the supermarket.

Mine, hates them. - hell she even hates Van Halen!

My woman is a new DT fan. She kinda liked it before but ADTOE made her a big fan. Funny to see her tell anyone who would listen to give it a try lol! But she is trying to keep us from listening to it too much because she doesn't wanna get sick of it.

MasterShakezula

I ain't dating a lass unless she shares my love for DT and Rush.

(And Star Wars.  Anyone who cannot bring themselves to like Star Wars is an awful human being)

DT2003

My wife and I have completely different taste in music so she doesn't "get" DT at all.
I have an hour drive each way to work though and I have ADToE on iTunes on my computer at work so I definitely get my obsession fulfilled.
