I don't know what you mean by this:

Dream Theater has always incorporated elements of "thrash metal" in one form or another, so I'm not sure what specifically you mean by that.

But in terms of bands/albums that have a similar sound/feel:  Redemption.  Fates Warning as well.  And the new Arch/Matheos album.  If you want to go a more symphonic metal route, Symphony X.

The only things dream theater has done with thrash metal that I know of is the beginning of Nightmare.  I'm sure they've done it a couple times more.  So, in the event that you like those parts I'm asking it to be barred from consideration.

Dream Theater are pretty thrashy.  Just saying.

Dream Theater are hugely influenced by Metallica. And Metallica definitely fall under thrash.

Still not sure what parts of that you are considering "thrash," as they've done things that are both heavier and faster, even on earlier albums.  But in any case, listen to these two songs in their entirety and tell me what you think.  The first is a heavy/melodic song.  The second is more power ballady.  Please listen to both all the way through before forming an opinion.  Let me know what you think and then we can perhaps offer other recommendations based on those:

Walls

What Will You Say

To me, this band does all the things that DT does well.

Look at Derek Sherinian's solo stuff and Planet X.

Moon Safari is good, but a lot less metal than DT.

Maybe Pain of Salvation.  Also Scale The Summit.

Oh, and Opeth.

Pinga

you might like Pain of Salvation's second album, One Hour by the Concrete Lake

PS Head

Cant believe no ones mentioned Haken yet.Check out their debut album AQUARIUS... and their forth coming album VISIONS.You wont get more Dream Theater than these guys.Check out the resent samples of the new album.

Somewhat OT, but where the flock has this band been all my life?! :omg:  Listened to both tracks and will now proceed to listen to the rest of the album. I see a purchase on the horizon... Those vocals are just superb (to say the least)!

How are the rest of Redemption's albums?

check out Haken and Redemption..great bands

I heard both songs, I like them both but the first one is better, not a fan of the reverb on his voice, and it sounds a little dated, guitar riffs are cool, but that wasn't thrash to me if that's what you were implying, if you were trying to recommend something dream theaterish they do have similar sounds.

Dublagent66

Symphony X.  Although, they incorporate more screaming than DT does.

Redemption is good.

Agreed.  The Origins of Ruin & Snowfall On Judgment Day are a couple of my favorites.

Heritage, their new album, doesn't have "growls" and is one of their best albums ever. only falls short of Ghost Reveries - that album is just pure perfection.
never been a huge fan of "growls" within music, but for Mikael I can make a big exception  :tup

Yes, I was trying to give you some good recommendations.  Redemption is probably the strongest recommendation I can give.  Those songs were from their 2009 album, which would easily have been my album of the year if not for The Whirlwind and BCSL also coming out in 2009 (and some days, I might even put it ahead of those).

Here's an edit of the first some from the Arch/Matheos album I mentioned above if you are interested in that.  Arch's vocals are spectacularly good, but they are very different, so I can certainly understand if you don't take to them:  Stained Glass Sky (edit)

Pagan's Mind

2nd Favorite band after DT(with Circus Maximus trailing close behind)...actually like a couple of their albums better than some DT ones.  Enigmatic:Calling is an absolute masterpiece IMO  :tup

No one besides PM and CM(outside of DT) comes close to satiating my appetite for quality prog metal.  These guys write quality songs and also have outstanding technical ability and chops.

All the DT-esque bands that fit into your criteria have already been mentioned. Too bad there is only a few bands that share that style and sound (somewhat).

RudessSolo

CrimsonSunrise

Try Pain of Salvation "Idioglossia"  and "Beyond the Pale"

Jaq

There's a whole cottage industry of Italian progressive metal bands that sound like Dream Theater. Empty Tremor is one I can think of, and their keyboardist went on to form a band called Twinspirits that continues quite in that vein. There's a Polish band called Animations; their first album sounded a LOT like LTE, and when they added a singer...they sounded like Dream Theater :lol Dreamscape is a German band that works in the DT mold too...basically, if you dive into the European market far enough, you're gonna hit a TON of bands that sound like DT to a certain extent.

Can't believe we've gotten this far without mentioning Shadow Gallery, I can't imagine someone who likes DT not liking them.

If you like their proggy/mellow side then Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree are a must to check out.

Panic Attacker

Visitor, Shadow Gallery is what you're looking for. Try the album "Tyranny"

....trust me

Pols Voice

Ice Age. Unfortunately, they only made a couple albums then disappeared.
