The best vocal moment on I&W is not the F# in Learning to Live

It is in Metropolis when JLB sings the line, "I'm asleep yet I'm so afraid."

The way he holds the second syllable of 'afraid" for forever and then vibratos it at the end is nothing short of godly.

OsMosis2259

Not only its the best moment, it's also my favorite DT song :) It's flawless

BlobVanDam

Like the rest of IaW, it's obviously a great moment, but there are so many better ones for me.

If I had to choose a favourite, I'm thinking maybe the end of the first verse of Take The Time-
"I think it's time for a chanyaaaaaaannngggggeeeeeeee".

Eargasmic. :tup

So fucking true. I agree completely.

Cranky

The best vocal moment in DT history is.............

"Let me introduce... My brothaaa"
The Count of Tuscany, Black Clouds & Silver Linings, June 23rd, 2009.

DTGeek

+1 to that line in Met... I also love the part after the instrumental section, "before the leeeeeaves have fallen".  I might be crazy, but the F# in LTL never did all that much for me.

ReaPsTA

If there's pensive fear, a
wasted year
A man must learn to cope
If his obsession's real,
Suppression that he feels must
turn to hope

I mean seriously, holy shit.

pogoowner

You're right that the F# isn't the best vocal moment, definitely. Not sure if "I'm asleep yet I'm so afraid" is the best, but it's certainly excellent. I might be inclined to agree with Blob's choice.

WildeSilas

Oh wow - I've thought this exact same thing before. I think it also has to do with the way it's followed by the guitar riff and then he sings, "Somewhere, like a Scene from a Memory...there's a picture of a thousand words."

It didn't really affect me this way until after SFAM came out, and now it feels tied to this huge story. So yeah, when he hits the "so afraid" line, I get this huge surge of emotion, like I know something the character doesn't, and can anticipate what's going to come. Very powerful moment for me as a listener, and brilliant that it works backwards like that. Definitely my favorite I&W moment.

Yeah definitely.  Or the last verse before the cool-down in Surrounded.

Edan the Man

Really, every line sung Metropolis Pt. 1 is amazing, it's one of JLB's top songs ever imo :hefdaddy

Wait JLB actually sings that? It goes on for so long I've always assumed there was studio trickery going on behind it.

Though even knowing that I'd still go for 'swimming in a lake of fire; as a child, I thought I could live without pain'.

Metrovarium

Nope, it's most definitely the climax of Surrounded:

I sent the spirits tumbling down the hill
But I will hold this one on high above me still
She whispers words to clear my mind
I once could see but now at last I'm blind

BlobVanDam

Let us all just agree that the best vocal moment on Images and Words is THE BIT WHERE JAMES LABRIE SINGS. :metal

Jamariquay

I've always enjoyed "Watch the sparrow falling, gives new meaning to it all, if not today nor yet tomorrow then some other day."

(I did that from memory. I think that's how it goes....)

Mladen

A lot of great vocal moments on I&W, but sorry, F# is still my favorite.  :metal

Guitalguy

As a child, I thought I could live without pain, WITHOUT SOOOORROOOOOW

Jirpo

Thats one of the best, but I prefer

"Before the leaves have fallen
Before we lock the door
There must be the third and last dance"

The whole song is just magical though :)

Jaffa

Massive kudos to ReaPsTA and BlobVanDam for bringing up Take the Time, which is exactly what I came here to do.   :metal

Actually, the F# isn't even my favorite vocal moment in Learning to Live, now that I think about it.

Home, which reuses a lot of Metropolis' sections, probably the most direct references on SFAM, so it's not that stupid at all. :)
