I was thinking today about that comparison. One thing that struck me about ADTOE is that there is a good number of fresh elements in them, but kinda "raw", not settled as a major element of their writing style yet. I got reminded of Genesis' "And then there were three", where a major band member had just left, and there were clear new elements in their writing which then settled into Genesis' later style.

Discuss/ridicule.

Maybe because I'm so familiar with DT's past albums and side projects, I don't hear anything completely new, but I hear a lot of old elements and suppressed elements surfacing.

I hear a lot of the album and think "I haven't heard that in a while", but it's still familiar ground.
And when I say suppressed, I mean I hear a lot of JR's influence becoming more prominent. I hear more of an electronic influence from him that I don't think he was able to fully explore in DT before, but we know he's been interested in for a while, judging from his Youtube clips and other music.

I'm not familiar with Genesis though, so I can't make the comparison there. But aside from that I agree with everything in the OP.
