Wow was this even announced before?

ACID_FOX

When did Bono become the new singer for Dream Theater?

Saiko

After seeing the video I'm more convinced than ever that the song is at least a partial dig at the Obama administration. When JLB was asked about the lyrics in a couple of interviews, he basically stated that "in the system we live in, there are entrepreneurs who work to make people's lives better, but unfortunately, there are also those who use the system in a selfish way and even sometimes feel that others should care for them."

It seems pretty clear (at least in my view) that he is talking about people who rely on government funded programs to get by instead of actively pursuing a career. In the video, there are constant cuts to the White House, as well as shots of money being printed also. To me, that ties into the same theory that funding entitlement programs instead of assisting business people is more harmful than helpful. Call me crazy, but that's what I'm getting out of it. I've read on more than on occassion that JP tends to lean a little on the conservative side, so it wouldn't surprise me if that is what the song is about.

Schwing!  James is totally badass in the shades/leather look.  I'm very glad RR didn't edit it down for time like they did CM.  Say, anyone know why JP doesn't use an actual accoustic guitar for those parts?  I always liked how Liefson uses one on a stand for songs like The Trees and Closer to the Heart, but have never seen JP do it.

A very cool video. Nothing's really happening when it comes to the general idea, but the shots of the guys are truly incredible.

Who edited this, Steve Harris??

A very nice video, but geez, leave it on Mangini so I can see WTF he's doing. Should've had the ride cymbal in the second pre chorus captured as well as more of JR's piano parts.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Agreed... I was looking for that ride action also!

Kotowboy

Not bad.

The Yahoo link works much better.

Overall a pretty good video, although I did have a bit of a laugh at JLB singing in those sunglasses, he looked like someone gave him loads of vouchers for topman and he accessorised himself up to the max!

obscure

Cool  :tup
James looks scary and sexy....

.... and Mangini well suited the DT image.....
I'm a happy fangirl now  :)

I saw him using it during the Awake tour back in 95 for the silent man. I even remember him droping the acustic by accident in the Munic venue.

I was thinking the same as Saiko. Think it's a dig at the Obama administration too.

Yes, and no.  I think, generally, you've got the subject matter nailed.  But I don't think it is a dig specifically at the Obama administration.  It could be, but I doubt it.  The general "problem" of the system that the song is about is not has been building and growing for quite some time now no matter who is in the White House.  I think it is more general than that.  Also, I wouldn't necessarily read too much into the visual images in the video, since those don't come from the band, but come from a video director who is doing what he thinks is best based on HIS understanding of what the song is about.

Regarding the buildings cracking and falling apart during JP's solo:  Now we have definitive proof that JP's guitar is simultaneously a force of nature and a weapon of mass destruction.  I knew it!

The one line in the song that makes me think he is specificially talking about the Obama adminstration is "You're blinded by your hunger, beware your days are numbered." Again, call me a conspiracy theorist, but the "days are numbered" could be referring to the 2012 election.

I do strongly agree about a video director doing his own thing though. I met Peter Buck of REM once a long time ago when Losing My Religion was a big hit. I asked him about the meaning of the video for the song, and he said "I have no idea!".

EpicCookie

Finally a full-length Dream Theater video!

LCArenas

I Guess it's okay. It's somewhat similar to Wither, but I think Wither fitted better with the video. Wonder if the guys who made the video learned it from VideoCopilot, because it looks really made in Adobe After Effects. Not saying it's a bad thing, though, it looks good ;)

I also don't think the Metallica-in-Death-Magnetic style really suits James (Leather Jacket, Sunglasses) but for the rest, I'm okay with it.

champbassist

The b/w scenery at the start almost has a ToT artwork feel to it.

I thought the same. Definitely reminded me of the ToT tunnel.

Pretty good video. The band footage didn't feel awkward. I would have liked to have seen more band, and less of the buildings stuff, but it was still fine.

chrisbDTM

i liked the 'theme'. showing all the old buildings in ruin, then showing new technological cities spring up, only to become the same in time

ronrule

Not bad. I really just want to see the guys play the parts with nice cameras and lighting. Don't you want a version with just Maningi? Love his drumming on this song.

TL

It was alright.
In my opinion, there should have been more footage of the band, fewer quick cuts in places, and for the symbolic imagery, more real footage of things instead of digital effects.
Just my two cents. Still a fantastic song, and I'm glad they didn't edit it for time.

7StringedBeast

I'm surprised people still make music videos nowadays.  Considering no TV stations play them anymore.  I don't see how they are cost effective to the record companies anymore.

Metabog

Hmm. An actual GOOD video from DT? I liked it.

*Insert "MP was to blame" rant here.

Loading too damn slow for me, but from the 30 seconds that I could get to load, it looks amazing.

Btw, did you have anything to do with this video or are you "just" doing animations/videos for the stage show?

Nope, I had nothing to do with this. Just the live stuff.

Alright :)

?

One of their better videos, maybe due to the fact that it's the full song! :lol Just kidding, the imagery was good, but I agree that MM should've been shown in the 2nd pre-chorus doing the cymbal thing and JM during the bass break.
