What are your thoughts on the crazy unison in the intro of Lost not Forgotten? (1:59-2:31)

krands85

Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

pogoowner

My least favorite part of the album, probably. It's completely out of place, and it doesn't seem to serve any purpose whatsoever. The rest of the song is a lot better.

ariich

Your screenname is so perfect for this thread. :lol

Anyway I like it. Not the best instrumental they've done, but solid and really good fun.

because I've only heard it once I can't judge...my first impression was that it was crazy, felt kind of weird/out of place but I totally felt tickled (I was just laughing)

theseoafs

I wouldn't change a thing about LNF. I love the tickle section, as it's called.

SupermanJLU

The first time I heard it I was completely thrown off but now after a few spins it is  :metal

LieLowTheWantedMan

MasterShakezula

It may of been my favorite part of the song.

IJewBear

I think it's awesome. The first time, my eyes widened. It just didn't stop and it went on and on. After a few more listens, I got used to it and enjoyed it as a part of the song.

rumborak

I have to smile every time it comes, because it's so ridiculously over the top. I know there's nothing lyrically about Portnoy on the album, but I somehow wonder whether that section was somewhat intentionally "defiant", sort of a musical middle finger to the very much in-line music of the last few albums.

Either way, that section embodies for me why I looove this album. It takes chances. What if we don't like it; so what?

I like it, kind of feels wierd in the song overall, but when the unison ends and goes into that sick riff, it kind of feels right... if that makes any sense.

ResultsMayVary

Picked "Oh DT, you so crazy" and I love this section. So fucking cool.  :metal

MajorMatt

It's fantastic, but it's a grower - as was the whole song for me!

The Silent Cody

I might say that I don't like for now. It does not have so much sense for me ;) rest of the song is way better ;)

Really? Is this the kind of scraping people have to do now to continue against MP?

I like it. Really don't see what's to take issue with. This is what Dream Theater do.

Yet again it's interesting to see that even though people seemed against it, the consensus is positive. I guess the dislikers are always the most vocal.

Dude, chill. I love the section, it makes me smile because it's such a ballsy piece of music. Don't dwell on my little hypothesizing here; there's really not too much to read into it. I am not raking on MP; in fact, MP is more and more falling by the wayside these days for me.

I think that this section is OK. Nothing more, nothing less. Normally, I'm not too fond of that style, but it surprisingly fits quite well. The only problem I have with it is that it's too long. I would have been completely fine with it being 10-15 seconds long; as it is, it seems a bit much to me.

Priest of Syrinx

Widdely Diddely... sounds like a fat rapper who sings in falsetto.

ZKX-2099

It's god tier. At first I was orgasmic over JP and JRs playing then I payed attention to the genies playing and loved it even more.

No, that's fine. Keep in mind I'm digesting the entire day's worth of ADTOE discussion in the span of about half an hour, so it all hits at once. You just caught the tail end of it from me, I'm afraid. Sorry about that. :tup

It's all good :lol
I was really just letting my mind wander on that. That is, obviously DT didn't want to make a lyrical comment on the split, since that could only have turned out negative. So, I was wondering whether there weren't maybe some hidden musical things in that regard. This section really stood out to me because it was so unlike what they had done in the last few albums.

I don't know, it really doesn't sound that far off the beaten path to me. It sounds like the usual DT crazy unison that I've come to know and love. As usual they make it sound unique by the choice of tonality, harmony, and patterns used, but it sounds like their usual stuff.

But it is the most discussed section, so maybe I'm missing something here.

Metabog

I loved it, was blowing away when I heard it.

Cranky

I don't think it fits at all where it was placed, It should have gone into the instrumental section...
With that being said, it's probably the most insane unison they have ever done.

This exactly.
I'm usually a great fan of technical instrumental sections but this part is too much and indeed misplaced.

Liberation

Personally Lost Not Forgotten reminds me a little bit of The Dark Eternal Night - a mostly dark, heavy song, which has some really weird and crazy stuff in it, such as this section. It's pretty funny, I voted for the fourth option in the poll. :P

m0hawk

My favourite part of the song is the second verse, namely the "The greatest story never told" bit. The guitar melody right there is nothing short of magical. It gives me the same feeling the "Beautiful Agony" section did.

bss4life15

I love the section, and i don't think it's out of place, after nearly two minutes of a huge epic build-up there is this explosion of sound (break-down), it's totally over the top and crazy and totally left me really wanting to know where they go from there.

Sketchy

I think it's absolutely brilliant. It's just great how the intro is building up, and then this wierd bit comes in, climaxes and then suddenly dissapears into a really cool riff. It's just one of those things that I love about the album, that it's so full of wierd widdly-widdly surprises. It just makes it more interesting each time, and still leaves me wondering how the hell they did it and made it link so well with the riff after.

Naturally I went with the fourth option.

Progmetty

It's DT giving the rest of the song the finger, it's completely misplaced between the epicness of the intro and intensity of the verse. It's like watch a Flintstones episode in the middle of a Matrix movie.
But this is not bringing down anything about the rest of the song.

stryker

At first I thought it seemed a bit out of place, but the more I listen to it, I absolutely LOVE it!  :metal :metal
