For Portnoy there is life after Dream Theater, but is there any hope at all for a reconciliation somewhere down the line?
"I never say never," Mike answers. "They've moved on and I've moved on. (New Dream Theater drummer) Mike Mangini's an amazing drummer. But if the opportunity presented itself a few years down the road and I was available I would definitely consider it. That band was my heart and soul for 25 years. There's too much history there to ignore."

Finally he says something kind of positive about their choice

Give the man some credit. He haven't said one single positive ting about their choice yet. Finally he atleast hints they made a good choice.

Mike Portnoy on Dream Theater Reunion: I Never Say Never.

Not much of a negative spin from Blabbermouth.

Clap clap clap I hope he does not change his attitude from now on. So both sides will be done with this.

Knguro

Well the headline says: Portney. So
I'm not sure if they are talking about the same person. Hahahah just kiddin'. But seriously it says Portney.

I seem to remember him saying similar things to this around a month or two ago, I think it was on Eddie Trunk's radio show? He said Mike Mangini is amazing and he'd never say never regarding a DT reunion. It's cool to hear this attitude from him!

Maybe the overwhelming negative response to his previous comments actually got him to see the light, kind of.

Super Dude

Hasn't he said this before though?  Like in another article we were dissecting, where the focus was more on his negative comments? :p

Sounds good on the surface...... but this is just Portnoys way of saying if you guys change your mind I'll come back. Don't get me wrong. I am a huge fan of Portnoys "playing"...... but I'll take Mangini any day. He's better, and he just isn't all about look at me. Mangini couldn't care less if he does or doesn't get pats on the back for this album, he's just thrilled to be with a band where he can use all of his chops. He's a real team player.

Besides, what's he going to do, say Mangini sucks? That would go over great.

Hopefully he realises that the DT fans are just fickle, quick to form opinions about anything he says, and that most aren't really wanting to "turn their backs on him", but were just put off by his comments. One good comment (the type he should have made all along) and everyone here at least is congratulating him. Keep going like this and stop making stuff that reads more like sniping and I'm betting most reasonable people will hardly have a negative thing to say about him.

Edit: Yeah it did feel a bit familiar as he has said similar things to that before, but they were often overshadowed by some of the more foolish things he said. I'm sure if he comes out and says something else people don't like tomorrow, people will be quick to forget about this good one. It's all about just keeping this level of respectfulness up all the time.

ariich

It is nice to see him say something pretty relaxed and positive, but yeah as people have said, he did say basically the same thing before.

Madman Shepherd

The only statement I remember him saying before was when he was biting his tongue trying to figure out what to say and finally says, "I knew they would get an excellent drummer...but I'm going to keep my comments to myself."

This comment is new in the sense that he has never been this open and positive.  I don't think there is anything hiding under the surface.  He basically said Mangini is a great player and he has a lot of history in the band so he certainly wouldnt be opposed to a reunion if the timing was right.  He also mentions they've moved on and he moved on clearly indicating that there are two sides to the story and he recognizes that.  No biting his tongue, no bitterness in the tone, a really great step forward for everyone.

Yup

I think it's the first time in a year he said something nice about the band that wasn't qualified somehow.

I still don't have a grain of respect for the way he has handled himself the last couple months, but this is good. Keep it up.

lol, funny how all MP needed was to say something tactful to keep the hate at bay. Now, reactions about this are something I hope he sees.

I don't know  why but I do relate with this comment.

SnakeEyes

Good for him, really.  I don't mind that he says he wouldn't rule it out.  Who knows what will happen in the future?  He's right about that.  Maybe Mike Mangini will get tired of touring and not want to play in DT anymore.... no evidence of that happening and I hope it DOESN'T happen, but.... classy move on Portnoy's part.  He seems to be getting over the fact that it all happened and it's a done deal.
