I wonder what their practice schedule is like.

How much do they practice a day?

Any recent reports?

bss4life15

JMX and JP both said at Berklee they promised eachother they would practice six hours a day at least every day.
Don't know about the other though.

I would be shocked if that were still the case.  Or even anywhere remotely close.

Edan the Man

If most behind the scenes videos are anything to go by, it would be easier to count up the time that JMX isn't practicing.

darkshade

There is no doubt Myung practices ALL THE TIME!!!

I would guess that Mangini practices almost as much.

I get the feeling that JP doesn't stick to the 6 hours every day thing, as (IMO) there is a slight decrease in the "tightness" of his playing live, mostly in his solos. Compare Budokan to youtube videos of the last couple of tours. I'm sure he still practices a lot.

And Jordan doesn't need to practice. He probably does just so people still believe that he is a human being.

Elite

Actually Jordan practises a LOT, if I were to believe some of his interviews on his daily schedules.

Jordan is not a human being, he came down to earth to try to find some other gods that could play at his level.

ReaPsTA

I saw some interview where JP said he practices an hour per day.

What I find amazing is that JP practicing is probably more interesting than most guitarists trying to play all out.

hefdaddy42

Yeah, from what I understand, they all still practice quite a bit.

MP was the only one who never practiced.  He said so himself.

Not the case this tour IMO.  He seems very on top of his solos at the moment.

senecadawg2

I'm sure they all practice A LOT. If I had to guess I'd say that JMX practices the most. He never appears in any of the 'making of' cd's, and if he does, he's practicing. Obviously this is not a reliable source of information.

JM doesn't only warm up before shows, he also warms down after shows.

razorsedge

they all play a lot, certainly.  how much of that is practice probably varies.  Jordan probably experiments more than practices, strictly speaking.

snapple

I know JP and JMX's practices (as they have said) is just the simple stuff. Nothing fancy.

Myung warming down is just absurd.

No mention of James yet...?

Vocalists need to at least warm up before a show. There are some classically trained opera singers who have to start warming up their voice in the morning if they have a show in the evening. I know from the vocalist in my band that we warms up 2 hours before praticse or a show and doesn't eat anything in that time either. Not only is warming up a way to warm up your voice, it's also a method of training. So, I guess James does practise quite a bit.

YtseJamittaja

John Petrucci practises about 63 hours a day, and to do this he had to use time warp.

He said it on some interview so here's your answer.

James also drinks hot water with some honey in it before and during shows. See the bonus DVD for Live At Budokan for this.

He showed this to us on some documentary, I can't remember which. But we were guided around in the dressing rooms, and James showed us his thermos with hot water. You can also see him drinking hot water i the Chaos in Progress doc, while recoring. And in almost every show if you look closely.

out of curiosity what youtube videos are you referring to, cause in any given tour I would he struggles in certain sections of solos since he has done so every live album, but going from 09 to present it seems like he is pretty consistent with everything he has played solo wise.

johncal

Starting in a couple of weeks, they're all going to practice for at leat 2 hours a day for a full month!

It.......s a joke.

IJewBear

I mean, I assume they practice at least everyday. It is their job and they have to stay "practiced" with their job.

blackngold29

JM probably practices other songs when he's got a few rest measures during a show.

It would be cool to see what they actually focus on during practice, whether it's more scales or actual songs.

Based off what I've seen of backstage stuff, they practice parts of songs if they feel they need to, but generally practice different exercises (not just scales)

I'd imagine having a pretty clearly defined setlist helps a lot in that regard.

You're right, good call  :tup

I also think their new album is going to be very...demanding live.  So that may play a part in it as well.

hey now!  the press reviews have talked about the album being pretty ridiculous technically on several parts.
