Sorry to post another thread so soon. I get the feeling that that sort of thing is frowned upon here, but this is the last one I'm doing in this particular vein, and the question, I feel, is genuinely interesting and not at all spammy. Plus, gotta keep the boards occupied 'till the 13th, right?

Anyway, this is a sequel to my other thread, Black Chaos and Systematic Linings, though it should be more challenging because the consensus on these albums is far more consistent and positive. The concept is the same: you must re-cut Images and Words and Awake into one single-disc album, Images and 'Wakes. Take any of the tracks from the two albums and combine them in any order into a playlist whose length may not exceed eighty minutes. The songs you do not preserve are fed to Mike Portnoy, as before, and are lost forever. You may NOT edit the songs in any way, and you may not use pre-existing radio edits or any tracks not on the two original studio albums. If it helps, think of yourself as using an iTunes library to burn the single-disc playlist, which library has only Images and Words and Awake burnt directly from the CD's, without access to Audacity or any other program. Good? Good.

Here's mine:

Images and 'Wakes

1. Pull Me Under
2. Under a Glass Moon
3. Surrounded
4. Take the Time
5. Voices
6. Metropolis
7. Scarred
8. Space Dye Vest
9. Learning to Live

Total runtime: 1:18:31

I hated doing this, because Wait for Sleep was originally on my disc, but I had to let it die so that Space Dye Vest could live. Also, it pains me to turn two great albums into this disjointed mess.

I'll give it a shot:

1. Pull Me Under
2. Innocence Faded
3. Metropolis 1
4. Erotomania
5. Voices
6. The Silent Man
7. The Mirror
8. Lie
9. Learning To Live

Tried to actually make it flow, as well as having my favorites.  I really wanted to throw in Scarred, as well, but it'd of made it too long, and I refuse to give up any of A Mind Beside Itself (Possibly my favorite thing DT did), nor did I want to exclude Lie (The Mirror needs it to be complete, IMO).  And I really enjoy Innocence Faded and Pull Me Under, so there.

Jirpo

Images and Words is my favourite album ever, I would just have the whole of I&W with Innocence Faded after PMU and Scarred after UAGM.

MasterShakezula

Just about the opposite here.  Aside from PMU, M1, and LTL, I'd rank every single song over all of I&W, and I prefer AMBI (E, V, and TSM) and The Mirror over those 3.

I practically worship A, though I really enjoy I&W, nonetheless.

Adami

My problem is that Awake is 74 minutes, and there's no song under 6 minutes that I'd put on there. :(

Wait, are you saying you love all of Awake, and having all of it would mean not being able to put in you 6+ minute favorites from Images, or do you mean that all of your favorite songs from both albums are over 6 minutes?

That was a lot easier than trying to fit SC and BCASL onto one disc. ;)

No way will I do this.  It's their 2 best albums by far.  I will just take both as is.

1. Under a Glass Moon (7:00)
2. Don't Look Past Me (6:30)
3. Take The Time (8:30)

I'd call that more or less perfect. The Mirror's mainly there as an intro to Lie, but it's got some cool bits. If I'm not allowed Don't Look Past Me then do this instead:

1. 6:00 (5:30)
2. The Silent Man (4:00
3. Under a Glass Moon (7:00)
4. Take The Time (8:30)
5. Caught in a Web  (5:30)
6. Erotomania (6:30)
7. Surrounded (5:30)
8. Pull Me Under (8:00)
9. The Mirror (7:00)
10. Lie (6:30)
11. Wait for Sleep (2:30)
12. Learning to Live (11:30)

(74:00)

EDIT: ARSE! I forgot The Silent Man!

Amendment to original post - if you choose not to follow the rules of the thread, BlobVanDam gets to choose your CD tracklist for you. Do it.

If it's any consolation, hef, I don't think they're actually going to feed the leftover songs to Mike Portnoy and eradicate them from the universe.

It'd be too expensive, for one.

For a song to be lost forever, he would have to eat every single record, cassette tape, CD, and master tape of the album, then track down every hard drive with a copy, and either eat the drives, or destroy them. Realistically, he'd probably die from consuming all of those materials long before the songs were truly wiped out, or at the very least it would take so long that it wouldn't be a real threat. I think people could digitally copy them faster than any human could consume them.

This.
No way I can choose between the tracks of two of my favourite albums ever of which I love EVERY track on them.
I'd make a double CD, first CD featuring the entire I&W, second the entire Awake.
Wait, that wasn't allowed? Then screw this.

I could break up Images, but mixing the two is only going to weaken what Awake is.  Nothing against Space Dye Vest, but it doesn't really fit the album so this improves Awake a little.

Hi Aniland.
Was it Aniland's thing to make two threads over the span of two days while apologizing for making the second? 'Cause that sort of seems to me like a pretty tame thing to be known for.

There is no way to mix the climate from Images and Awake together. It's just doesn't fits, besides this two albums are so far perfect that I couldn't do it.

Initially I wanted the album to start with PMU, then The Mirror, then Lie, then CiaW, because I thought that could be a really cool run of metal.  But this would mean figuring out 20 minutes of other stuff to leave off, which I couldn't do.  So I went with the above.  I THINK it would flow quite nicely.

I've actually had a playlist for Images that's included Innocence Faded and Lifting Shadows.  They fit in quite well with the atmosphere of Images and Words.

Anyway, I'll give it a shot:

Pull Me Under
Caught in a Web
Another Day
Metropolis, pt. 1
Lifting Shadows
Under a Glass Moon
The Silent Man
Take the Time
Innocence Faded
Surrounded
Wait for Sleep
Learning to Live

Yes, that includes ALL of I&W, because I couldn't imagine sacrificing a single song from that album.  Between 6:00, Caught in a Web, Innocence Faded, The Silent Man, and Lifting Shadows, it was hard for me to think of one to drop, but 6:00 had to go.  It functions well as an opener, but would seem out of place in the middle of any album.  Pull Me Under is my favorite opener in Dream Theater's catalog, so obviously I couldn't let that one go.

Pull Me Under > Caught in a Web works really, really well, I think.  Similar atmosphere, both are "heavy," and Caught in a Web is really good for keeping up the flow.  Another Day provides a welcome breather, and drops into Metropolis pt. 1 pretty well.  Most interesting in terms of sound is Lifting Shadows > Under a Glass Moon--they feel like they were made to be right next to each other.  The Silent Man and Take the time work well together, too, and the last four songs on this album combine for a "bright" sound.

KevShmev

So, some of the songs on this album will have a triggered snare, and some of them won't?  Got it. :lol

1. Metropolis
2. Erotomania
3. Voices
4. The Silent Man
5. Take the Time
6. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
7. Scarred
8. Space Dye Vest
9. Wait for Sleep
10. Learning to Live
