How does Dream Theater influence your daily lives?

Today, I was in the kitchen grabbing some kool-aid (like a boss) and I noticed that a toothpaste (I think Colgate) commercial had a jingle in the background in 7/8. Without DT, I never would have known.

DT is one of the very few things keeping me alive these days. I hate myself and most human beings, but music helps me survive. Influence right now is in other words very high, since they is coming here in January. Then I have to live until January at least.

It affects my girlfriend more than it affects me.  James LaBrie's voice is pretty high on the list of things she finds absolutely revolting, right up there with Jeff Goldblum.

Me, I just think it's some nice music to put on every once in awhile.  Not on a daily basis, though.

I'm 50 and grew up with the wonderful rock music of the 70's.  I've been a major fan of Rush, seeing the 10 times in concert.  And since about 4 years that I know Dream Theater, what a magical band, totally unique with some of the best musicians in the world.  So for me it's a great discovery, love to listen each day to their great music and melodies, very creative band.  Well, I simply fell in love with a band which is something I never thought it would happen again.  And have seen them 3 times in concert so far.  It's another thing with the training I do that is keeping me young.

Let me put it to you this way - I took my girlfriend to the zoo a few months ago, and I just happened to be wearing my DT shirt. As we were walking past a crowd of people, I noticed this dude, probably in his 30's or 40's, wearing a hat with the Majesty symbol on it. I noticed his hat and he noticed my shirt, and for a brief moment we passed each other without saying anything. We each took a few steps before turning around, sharing a smile and a 'right on' nod, and we kept on going our separate ways. It totally made my day. I guarantee you if we had been wearing a Metallica shirt and hat (can't stand Metallica btw) or some other shitty, generic metal band, that moment wouldn't have been special and we probably wouldn't have acknowledged each other at all.

Well, I've been a fan for 19 years so I'd say that's a major influence.  Although, I haven't seen them live since the SC tour, I got a pleasant surprise when finding out that they are doing "an evening with" show here in Mesa Az just 3 miles from my house on Dec 4th before they break for the Holidays.  Wow!!  Can't wait for that.

The only immediate thing I can think of is that when I see the initials JLB, JM, JR, MM or JP on anything, I go straight to thinking about that band member. Hardly life changing, though.

Interesting that you don't mind associating Dream Theater with a working mindset. When I listen to music I love, I want it to be in an environment free of worries and bullcrap. At work, we have about 10 Radiohead songs thrown in the playlist; as much as I love Radiohead, when listening to those 10 songs outside of work-time, I can't help but bring my mind back to the worries of work. Ideally, entertainment and work should be kept quite separate, at least for me.

DT music definitly has influence on my playing so I can say that thanks to Their music I have developed musically
