THIS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A KM / DS / JR FIGHT THREAD

Ok what is your favourite key tones  in dt?

Personally, I love almost all of Derek's tones... and JR's organ / dirty organ / analog tones (heres looking at the Octavarium album for that last one)

BlobVanDam

JR's piano sounds are always amazing. There's the backwards piano sound of ITNOG, the whirly piano sound from Disappear, the natural warm piano tone of Vacant, the bright tone of About to Crash. So much variety for just a piano.

MasterShakezula

I liked Kevin's greasy organ tone prominent throughout Erotomania.

It gives me a horrendous case of, well, Erotomania.

Chino

I really like JR's gothic chant tone on OAMOT on LAB.

atalkingfish

I've been liking the standard keys solo dirty organ ish sounding tone he uses a lot (ignoring the fact that the band had keyboardists before JR, kill me if you wish)

But there have been some pretty crazy ones on the previews for ADTOE. And by crazy I mean awesome. And by awesome I don't mean "HOLY CRAP AWESOME", more like a "hey... that sounds cool!" awesome. And by "cool" I mean interesting. But not interesting in the "oh... that's interesting" way, but in the "wow, that really is interesting" way. Like... it sounds cool. But not in your face cool. Just interesting cool. Yeah. Intercoosting.

scoutmasterdave

I'm a big fan of the old-school monophonic square-wave Moog-ish lead sounds ala 8vm.

Metabog

Jordan's main lead around SFAM/LTE/SDOIT, before it got all distorted and wah-y.

The Silent Cody

The "popcorn" sound of course :) and his leads from ADTOE will be huge!! also gothic from ANTR is good.

wammabe

Derek's sounds in A Change of Seasons and Trial of Tears
The intro of The One Who Helps To Set The Sun'
Jordan's organ and piano sounds
I really like the keyboard sounds in I&W
The sounds presented in the recent ADTOE snippets and in On The Backs Of Angles are really nice.

I'm not fond of the piggy sound and other sounds Jordan commonly used on the recent albums. It felt as if Jordan had no creative control and had to either back up the guitar with the piggy sound, or fill in a solo with the distortion wawah keyboard sound. :/ I don't mind them at all, but I think Jordan can do a whole lot more than just that. What we have seen in ADTOE is a good example of what he should do. :)

The Presence of Frenemies

I love a lot of the keyboard tones on WDADU and I&W, like the solos in LFAGA, LTL, and TTT. I also love JR's continuum, piano, and choir sounds.

The Dark Master

Well, Kevin and Jordan deffinately have their moments, but for all around best keyboard sound, it's gotta be Derek's classic 70's Hammond organ, particularly on A Change of Seasons, Raise the Knife, Burning My Soul, Lines in the Sand and Trial of Tears

DAT SOUND, man    :metal

DetonationSequence

There's this one choir sound on SDOIT (if I recall correctly, it's used on Blind Faith, TGD, and the title track) which is awesometacular. Rudess's piano sounds are all amazing too, and I love the non-dirty organ he pulls out on Blind Faith. His Moog sounds are generally perfect too, especially on Octavarium (which is pretty much nonstop amazing keyboard sounds, especially the intro). Not such a fan of his SC tones, but BCSL goes right back to having incredible patches everywhere beside the leads; TCOT especially has beautiful sounds of every variety, from chimes to pads to strings and choirs. ADTOE sounds like it'll continue in this vein, but with better leads as well.

Kevin has some awesome stuff too, especially on Awake. You've got to love that organ from 6:00, and as an ambient music fan the pads from Eve certainly please my ears.

Derek's sounds don't grab me so much, except the ACOS ones, which are nothing short of glorious - the bells and voices in the intro were, back when I got into DT, the first spine-tingling sign that this band was something truly special, and he's got wonderfully atmospheric parts going throughout the ride. The leads aren't half bad either, and he has a pretty sweet piano tone going on.

?

Most of the keyboard sounds on Awake really rule! :metal I also like Derek's lead sound in the intro of Lines in the Sand (when the whole band kicks in) and Jordan's had some cool moments too.

ReaperKK

I've always loved Derek's sounds, they are the most memorable to me.

JR has a great grand piano sound.

I agree with you Derek just make the keys sound really cool, never corny. I also love many of Jordan's tones but not his go to one. The tone he produces in the first part of his solo in Blind Faith I love which is kind on Hammond Organ like.

KevShmev

Gotta go with the classic Dream Theater orchestral keyboard sound - like during the intro to Metropolis, the end of Hell's Kitchen, and the middle instrumental section of The Best of Times.  That keyboard sound was one of the things I fell in love with almost instantly when I first heard the band back in '93. :coolio

Ryzee

I've always liked Derek's lead tone.  A great example would be the solo in Burning My Soul.  Mediocore song, freaking awesome key solo!  His solo in Trial of Tears is another good example, but the best example is his extended intro to Lines in the Sand off Once in a Livetime, where he almost sounds like he's palm muting some chords!  How does he do that??

Sketchy

I do love Derek's "rock balls" lead. It's nothing short of damned epic, and he also does fantastic hammond sounds too. I also love Kevin's lead sounds, especially the ones on 6:00, Scarred and that one on The Majesty Demos (I think it's on Two Far, where he plays an epic solo). When it comes to Jordan's sounds, that sound on SFAM and SDOIT is brilliant, as are his pianos and the gothic sound on BCSL.

E.S.

The classic "LTE lead" gets my vote.

Obfuscation

I love lots of them but I'll just mention two and they are KM's piano around the end of the epic instrumental section and JR's different sounds in the intro to ITPOE Pt.1

JR's piano sounds are always amazing. There's the backwards piano sound of ITNOG, the whirly piano sound from Disappear, the natural warm piano tone of Vacant, the bright tone of About to Crash. So much variety for just a piano.

Backwards piano? The solo tone? The other ones are pretty spot on, though.

toro

THAT FUCKING BIG LEAD OF DEREK HNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG
also I love the Moog solo on 8VM.

Vajra

I fucking loved the mystical sound from the "Bridges In The Sky" snippet, and the zelda one from "Breaking All Illusions" I'd honestly say they are my favorites.

Kevin Moore: the organ sounds on Awake, and the piano on Space Dye Vest
Derek: everything on ACoS, and yeah, his lead sound is BOSS.
Jordan: I wish he'd kept the tones he had with LTE, he had a really amazing sound back then, especially his lead tones. Piano still always sounds amazing though.

What's wrong with the backwards piano? He often uses it for eery sections just to add a touch of atmosphere, and it's a pretty subtle sound, not gimmicky as the name suggests.
It's used in the section of ITNOG just before the "hundreds of believers...." verse, and also during ITPOE pt 2 during the intro when it's just bass and piano.

RaiseTheKnife

Derek's lead in the Trial of Tears solo - does a donald duck sounding trick.
Derek's breathy strings in the Raise The Knife mid-section.
Jordan's thick organ on the pre-chorus of ITPOE pat one (mixed to the left speaker)

Derek.
And, if you like it....go get his solo stuff and Planet X stuff.
Amazing.

I just didn't know what it was.

I wasn't quite sure if you were questioning what it was, or questioning that I thought it was good, so I was just clarifying. :tup

THIS and his whole SFAM piano sounds.
I also like the tone of the keyboard on ACOS, it's very aggresive.
