i think ministry of lost souls is my fav.

Mosh

MasterShakezula

I hear there's this band who's really good at making those.

They're called, like, Theatre of Dreams or something; you should look for them on General Music Discussion.

Best Dream Theater ballad: Space Dye Vest or Surrounded. That could change when other songs come to mind

I think that a prog metal ballad thread would go on another forum section, but then again, I'm no admin, I'm not even a cool kid around here. I don't know absolutely anything.

EDIT: Best Dream Theater METAL ballad would be Ministry of Lost Souls too.
EDITEDIT: ...maybe misunderstood.
EDITEDITEDIT: Yeah definitely misunderstood.

Candlelight Fantasia by Symphony X is a favorite :hefdaddy

But as for Dream Theater, well...would Finally Free count?  I mean, if Ministry of Lost souls does...

Other ones that are up there for me are Another Day, Surrounded, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, and, hell, why not just throw Octavarium on that list too?  I mean, it's mostly pretty soft.

If Octavarium is a ballad, then so is The Dark Eternal Night. :P

Again, if The Ministry of Lost Souls is a ballad, I think we're using the term pretty loosely here anyway.  Most people seem to have a different definition; I would never have personally classified TMLS as one, or Octavarium, for that matter.

I left out Hollow Years.  That's my favorite Dream Theater ballad, but I don't think there's anything very prog or metal about it.

That song reeks of Elton John, and not the the good one.

The Presence of Frenemies

Nobody's mentioned TSCO yet? Wow.

MasterShakezula

I would of if it was a worst ballads thread.

i hate you
I dig early (69-76) Elton a lot, but Anna Lee does nothing for me and pales compared to the real deal at doing Elton.

Adami

My favorite DT ballad is Space Dye Vest.

The Ministry of Lost Souls is in no possible way a ballad.

It's more of an 80's style power ballad.

Misunderstood is a winner

How is that a ballad?

Seriously, I am noticing some strange definitions of ballad here.

QFT.  A mellow or non-rocking song does not automatically equal a ballad.

The Dark Master

As far as Dream Theater is concerned, for me it is a  toss up between To Live Forever and Lifting Shadows off a Dream.  Both absolutely breathtaking songs that can each single-handedly reaffirm why I rate DT so highly as a band.  Another Day, Surrounded, Wait for Sleep, Speak to Me, Through Her Eyes, The Spirit Carries On, Disappear, and even recent ones like Forsaken, Ministry of Lost Souls and Wither are all truly great songs, proving just how musically versatile DT can be.

As for other prog-metal bands, I can think of plenty that have great ballads: Symphony X (Candlelight Fantasia, Lady of the Snow, Paradise Lost, When All is Lost), and Queensryche (The Lady Wore Black, No Sanctuary, I Dream In Infrared, Eyes of a Stranger, Silent Lucidity, Bridge, Someone Else?) both have a large number of awsome ballads, and bands like Fates Warning (A Pleasant Shade of Grey - part VI), Circus Maximus (Silence from Angels Above, Zero) and Balance of Power (Do You Dream of Angels?, Savage Tears, Shelter Me)  all have great ballads as well.

But as for the question of which prog-metal band has the best ballads, there is one answer and one answer only:

SAVATAGE

In the Dream
Strange Wings
When the Crowds are Gone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv82_BvKjw0&ob=av2e )  :metal
Summers Rain
St Patrick's
Can You Hear Me Now?
If I Go Away
Believe
All That I Bleed
Alone You Breathe
This is the Time
This Is Not What We Meant
One Child
Not What You See
Anymore
Back To a Reason

...... and I know I skipped more then a few, not to mention all the ballads the band has done with TSO, seriously, when in comes to metal ballads, prog or no prog, this band is the King! :metal

wammabe

I'm a bit confused though. When I hear "Prog Metal Ballad" I think of a progressive and softish song with super electric guitar. If that were the case, Misunderstood and Ministry of Lost Souls might fit into that category.

Amoniz

-Beneath the waves (Ayreon)
-Wait for sleep (Dream Thater)
-In a word (Fates Warning)
-Revelation -Mother Earth- (Ozzy Osbourne) - Definitely a prog song, multiple sections, etc. imo.
-Lifting shadows off a dream (Dream Theater)
-A world apart (Fates warning)
-Infinite dreams (Iron Maiden)
-Nightmist (Pain of Salvation)
-Beyond the mirror (Pain of Salvation)
-Morning on Earth (Pain of Salvation)
-Kingdom of loss (Pain of Salvation)
-White Queen (Queen)
-Conceiving you (Riverside)
-Don't ever cry, just remember (Shadow Gallery)
-Hope for us (Shadow Gallery)
-Vow (Shadow Gallery)
-Candlelight Fantasia (Symphony X)
-The sacrifice (Symphony X)
-Space-dye vest (Dream Theater)
-At fate's hands (Fates Warning)
-Misunderstood (Dream Theater) - I guess it's a sort of an "build-up" ballad
-The best of times (Dream Theater) - It's basically a ballad, with some Upbeat sections, I guess
-Smashed (James LaBrie)
-Tear before the rain (Jordan Rudess)
-Hessian peel (Opeth)
-Porcelain heart (Opeth)
-Isolation years (Opeth)
-To rid the disease (Opeth)
-A fair judgement (Opeth)
-Harvest (Opeth)
-Face of Melinda (Opeth)
