But the band's best album is the one with their very longest song. ???

Not in the slightest. If they didn't feel any of the songs needed to be that long, there's no reason for them to try to force it.

It's like sex - just because you can do it for 23 minutes doesn't mean it's entirely good the whole time - but if you can blow someone's mind in 9-12 minutes, then that's epic.

Wow. I guess I've found the explanation I've been looking for.

I've been making Lady Gaga write 30 minute epics for the past few months.

Don't get so hung up on song length. It should only be as long as it needs to be to provide a good listening experience. Nothing good comes out of creating 15-minute+ songs just for the sake of having songs of that length.

This.

The 2 songs over that mark on the last album were a mixed bag for me. I love TCOT, but ANTR is a bit of a mess to me. I would rather the song writing be solid before worrying about length.

There are still epics on this album, but they're more in the vein of classic DT epic length.  :metal

Btw, Blob, who the hell is that girl in your signature? And what is she saying? It's quite hypnotical...

Click her and all will be revealed.

WOW....  I had heard some Blackmore's Night years ago and it was a little TOO minstral-y.  This isn't half bad  :tup

Oh... and on topic, I like 15+ min songs, but I'm not dissapointed

alexofsweden

For me, Metropolis is an "epic" song...so I can't say yet if I'm disappointed

Well this by all. If you look at the lenghts from Images, Awake or SFAM you can see that the best tracks from this albums had very similar lenght to those ones from ADTOE.

BlobVanDam

Funnily enough, the 10+ minute songs from IaW and Awake are easily my least favourites from their respective albums. Although for FII, the 2 over 10 minutes are probably my favourites.

Phoenix87x

I'm burned out on epics at this point. I just want a back to basics, well balanced and well paced album.

yeshaberto

most of my favorite songs are the lengthy ones...
but I will be happy with any length

millahh

Some of the recent epics felt forced, and long for the sake of being long.  I'm glad that it appears that they're now letting the song determine its own length, rather than having a specific time in mind.

So by length standards, Voices, Home, Learning to Live, Metropolis, or any other song that is highly praised by fans under 15min are all not epics because they aren't 15+ minutes long? But by length standards, say, ITPOE is? ITPOE is a great song (counting both parts) but I wouldn't call it epic, per se.

I think that a song can be epic and be 5 minutes long. So far, Beneath The Surface sounds pretty epic to me and it's only about 5 minutes long. It shouldn't be about how many minutes is in a song, it should be about how much goodness is in the minutes. ANTR sounds like a mess if you ask me but it's automatically an epic because of it's length? Wtf?

Ravenheart

I agree with you, but I think "epic" is strictly in the context of length for this discussion. No one's saying that any song under 15 minutes can't sound epic or have epic undertones.

As for myself, well, I haven't liked any of their epics in recent time.

Vajra

I'm a bit bummed actually. I love very long songs.

If they were to make an epic of equal quality of ACOS or Octavarium, I think that would be fantastic.

ReaPsTA

No.  There will be more than eight songs on a DT album for the first time in over a decade.

Variety is more important.  8vm is actually disappointing to me because 6 out of 8 of the songs are under ten minutes.  ADTOE seems to have a good variety of shorter and longer tracks.

Pinga

So, according to OP's arbitrary definition of epic ITT, there are no epics in DT's full albums until 6DOIT.

Ok.

Ok.

Besides ACOS of course. And I would actually consider AMBI one long epic piece.

Pinga

Of course, that's why I said full albums. ;) And AMbI, long as it is, doesn't have the feel of a traditional epic IMO.

Arch Benemy

haven't read thread; too long, but basically 'no' becuase 'epic' is in the eye of the beholder. Who's to say a 7 or 10 minute track can;t be epic/? man's tellin me Under a Glass Moon isdn'#t epic and ITPOE pt 2 is? No wayt bro

Bacong

I'm sure someone's said this, but no. I'm actually quite enthused there aren't any. Plus, songs over 10 minutes are just so damn long. There's no need to be long for the sake of it.

I'd facepalm if there's yet another 18+ minute song at the end of this album.

How would you even assume there's a song we don't know about? :P We have the song lengths, you know

Metropolis Pt. II

I'm so glad they don't have any "long" songs on ADTOE. Like others have said, it'll be nice for a change.
