If you adore JLB, run away from TOT and forget you ever heard of such a thing.  ;)

What????? No way!!!!

Jirpo

I love both but I prefer 6DOIT. I guess it doesn't really matter which one you get first.

Sketchy

Get Six Degrees. I found it much harder to get hold of here than ToT, so I'd get it whenever possible. Besides, I adore six degrees, especially that solo between Goodnight Kiss and Solitary Shell. That solo is genius.

Do you prefer straight up heavy metal? If so, get Train of Thought.

Do you prefer diverse Progressive Rock/Metal? If so, get Six Degrees.
I love both. Seems that Six Degrees is the one to get. New question, how does it stack up with the holy trinity of albums? (Images and Words, Awake, Metropolis)

SDoIT > I&W, Awake, SFaM

Not one good song on ToT.  Not one bad song on 6DOIT.

Mosh

I disagree, I love As I Am and ITNOG.

Well I ended up buying both. :D I put them on hold til tomorrow when I can just get both. So yea, this thread didn't really matter :P But cool discussion!

Not one good song on ToT.  Not one bad song on 6DOIT.

Aside from the last verse thing ITNOG is a pretty sick song, and Vacant is pretty awesome, but yea not overly fond of the rest.

I enjoy ToT, even Honor Thy Father. But 6DOIT just hits me more. They both have great songs, but since your getting both, listen to 6DOIT first then ToT so you can do the transition.

DetonationSequence

Get SDOIT. It's literally the greatest musical creation in the history of spacetime.

Bosk, if you're going to be right one third of the time, I'd like to suggest that you change your handle to bosk1/3.

ok, you maybe 2/3 right, as 6DoIT is better than SFaM, and maybe Awake, but the joke doesn't work as well as bosk2/3

I was planning on doing that anyway :)

I'm bigger than you in both vertical and horizontal dimensions, so we'll call it a draw.

Definitely SDOIT. It's their 4th-best album.

Raoul Sanchez

I prefer SDOIT, but that took me longer to properly appreciate while TOT was a much more immediate listen.

This. 6 degrees is good, infact real good, but took me a while longer to get into than most of thier albums. Glass prison is tops, but I still feel Blind Faith and The Great Debate, while almost awesome, tend to have some sections that drag them down a little. Misunderstood is great, but is the one song where the edited version is actually better, cutting out the unnecessary overlong outtro. Disappear is great, but pretty emotional and sad, so im not always in the mood for it. the ending is beautiful though. 6 Degrees the song is pretty awesome all round. Train of thought however, is pretty instantly listenable and consistent. I actually think they are both great albums, and because thier repsective good and weak points are vastly differrent, its actually a tough call comparing the two..

ToT is an amazing album, I love all of their albums......but next to 6DOIT, it seems incredibly weak and can't stand up to it.

His vocals were pretty darn awesome in this album, except for the obvious "Made by MP" vocal melodies (namely the second half of TDS, and some vocal melodies in HTF). Otherwise his voice is completely complimenting the heaviness of this album.

bss4life15

Six Degrees is the best DT album by far, but TOT is still pretty good.

tofee35

Im glad you got both because they're both awesome for totally different reasons. They both do what they set out to do; SDOIT-experimental/conceptual and TOT-dark toooone/straight classic metal

(I think that's what they set out to do. If not, they totally messed up.)     :\      <~~~ is this the "it looks good on you though" face?

Dream_Theater01

Both are great albums, but I'd go with "Train Of Thought".

yorost

Disc 1 of Six Degrees or Train of thought are both fantastic, so if they're the same price it doesn't really matter which one you get.  Both of these discs took me time to get into, though.

Disc 2 is rubbish in my opinion.  The scope of it wowed me the first few times I heard it, but it got old quickly.

ironhead

Six Degrees will give you more music and the stuff on there is more varied.  Go with Six Degrees.  It's top-notch all around.

Mosh

I'm listening right now to both albums.

Mosh

Well I gave Six Degrees a listen. It was great! Every song had some cool stuff.

Mosh

Listened to ToT. It was pretty good, I liked every song quite a bit. I can hear a huge MP influence on it.

LTE3

No question Six Degrees is a total representation of what the band truly is all about. This album has the best "epic" song they have written (the title song) and the best" heavy" song they have ever written  The Glass Prison.

fleaman

If you like Tool you should get 6DOIT..If you like Lamb of God you should get ToT!

PS: I know that some people will disagree but The Great Debate really sucked live without MP!
