Maybe this has already been done, but i don't see anything...

So I was just driving home from work with Falling Into Infinity blasting on maximum volume. Needless to say, I had forgotten how much I loved Trial of Tears. The mood it creates is astounding, John Petrucci is wonderful, Myung's lyrics are beautiful and poetic, and I think JLB's vocals sound as good as ever on that track. I had major chills when the acoustic guitar strumming kicked in and the 'wasteland' section began. I was then forced to tears as it climaxed once again.

All in all, this is without a doubt my favorite from FII, and also a top 10 song for me, maybe even top 5 if I'm in the right mood. Songs with Myung lyrics are some of my favorites (LTL coming in at 3 overall), and listening to this gem of a track just makes me more excited about Breaking All Illusions.

Top 5 song. It's better than anything they've written since 1990.

have you listened to the once in a livetime version of it? if you havent , i highly recommend it. it sounds way better then the original

Once in a Livetime doesn't sound better than the original for anything.

The Budokan version however, is at least on par with the original. JLB sings really good on that particular song, and improvises some nice melodies, and the lead-in to the acoustic section gives me chills.

I think it has been done before, but this song is so awesome, we can never have enough threads about it. :tup :tup

Dereks keyboard solo on this song is one of my fav DT solos.

Amazing song overall  :hefdaddy

Zydar

Not one of my absolute favourites, but a solid Top 20.

Not to mention JR's solo, which I like fairly better than Derek's (the original is very good as well, though!).

I love them both. :tup
Jordan plays the memorable half closely, then does his own style for the second half, but the way he holds that last note and just wails that note so smoothly over the soft acoustic makes such a great transition.

Damn, now I want to watch it again.

Interesting comment...either it's your top DT song or if not then everything you consider better is from WDADU.

ToT is my #3 DT song and I consider it an 11 on a scale of 1-10.

jsem

My 2nd favorite DT song. In the top 50 thread I detail why I love it and everything.

How it's even possible to forget that you loved the track is beyond me....

ricky

yeah dude, it's one of those songs I really love, but flies under my radar alot. im not sure why.

wammabe

Anyone else has orgasms at the keyboard sounds behind JP's solo and at the beginning of Wasteland?

j

Awesome song, top 5 for me probably.  The Budokan version is incredible too. :hefdaddy

snapple

This song has grown on me. I freakin' love it.

bss4life15

It's the most "meh" epic by DT that i have heard.

Infinite Cactus

Love it. Top 5 for sure. The chorus has my favorite DT drum beat ever, and I think its John Myungs best lyrics.

John94

I love it. Love the intro of it on Schmedley Wilcox too!

Absolutely adore "The Wasteland" section. I used  to listen to it non-stop walking around playing Fallout in the Wasteland. I found ashes, nothing but ashes.

tri.ad

Absolutely fantastic song, and a top 5 DT song for me as well. Love every aspect of it.

lordxizor

One of my favorite DT songs. And the Budokan version is great too.

wasteland

Yeah, i forgot to say it... but I love "The Wasteland". #2 Dream Theater section of all time (hence my nickname)

yeah but i mean, what qualifies a song as an epic? if Trial is an epic, then i still think its easily better than 8v. that being said, when it's compared to true DT epics like ACOS, it isn't as good.

So, if it IS an epic, its alright.

If it isnt, then it's one of DT's best songs.

LieLowTheWantedMan

Personally I think a song's an epic if it's epic.

ElliottTamer

Amazing song! Easily in my Top 10, probably in my Top 5.

ACID_FOX

A song shouldn't be judged differently depending on whether or not it's an "epic", which in itself is a made up term with no real definitions.

But back on topic, top ten song, possibly top five.

Implode

3rd favorite DT song. Absolutely beautiful.

Dublagent66

It's awesome.  I consider it one of those tribute to Rush DT songs.  Lots of Rush influence and Rush just happens to be my all-time favorite band.   :tup

My intro to this song was the Budakon version. It made me really appreciate DT, and what they do. This song alone made me buy Budakon.

How is 8V not a "true" DT epic if ACOS is?
This is why I hate the term epic. It's just an arbitrary, useless, meaningless term.

Is it a bootleg? Haven't heard of it.

I would only place 1 song released after FII higher than Trial of Tears. Top 5 song for me too.
