Box Set Dilemma

Here's my dilemma...

I'm thinking of buying the box set, but vinyl is worthless to me as I don't own a record player.

I have seen the documentary, so that doesn't lure me in either.

The artwork would be awesome to have. From what I've seen so far Ronald McDonald tightrope unicycle would look awesome in a frame.

The DT custom turntable slipcover? See above.

Ticket for life? HELL YES. Free DT concerts forever? What sane human being wouldn't want to go to their favorite band's concerts free for the rest of their lives? However, the one thing this doesn't take into consideration is the cost of traveling to said concerts. Not to mention that you have one in fifty chance of winning it. Out of all the fans who have pre ordered already, I'd say that's a bit of a long shot.

Digital download a day early? Meh. Honestly, what's a few hours? I can live without an early download, when I'm gonna rip my cd into my computer when I get it anyway.

What worries me is the lack of mention so far of a 3 disc special edition, with the instrumentals. From all I've read and heard the only way to get the instrumental tracks is in the box set. is this the case, or has anyone heard if they're going to release the instrumental tracks outside of this box set?

Mosh

It sounds like you want it for the ticket for life. I think you should only get it if there is a use for all those things for you. But that is just my opinion. Sounds like a bit of a waste if you don't use vinyls.

glaurung

Don't even factor the ticket for life into your decision. Whoever gets it should consider it an added bonus. So would the artwork and the instrumental mixes be worth all the extra money to you?

Right, same thought I had. Pictures and an instrumental disc are cool, but not $90 cool.

What makes you think your odds are that good?

This. Realistically, it's rather one in two hundred (assuming that there are 10,000 people buying the box set).

Not to count that many boxes may not be sold, so technically there could be less than 50 people getting the ticket. The odds depend on the number of boxes issued. If one million copies are printed, and just 10.000 sold, than you have one in 20.000 to get the ticket...

Perpetual Change

DT tickets aren't really that expensive. You can just buy them.

fleaman

Does anyone know what's going to be the price of the box set?

One Million Dollars!

olliemedsy

you say that you have to take into consieration traveling costs, but even if you payed for a ticket, you'd still have travelling costs. also, you say what are the chances of getting it, but 50 people will get it, and those 50 who do, will all be saying "i'm not going to get it". who says you wont get it??

fleaman

The 50 lucky box sets are going to be shiped ony in North America or worldwide?

CrimsonSunrise

Another aspect of the Ticket for life is....who knows what "Kind" of seats it translates to.  I mean.... if it translates to crappy seats, then I couldn't be bothered with it.

ElliottTamer

To be honest here, the stuff that comes with the Box Set is really pretty underwhelming for its price tag. It costs 10 times what a normal CD would and you don't really get much of use. All of that being said, I'm getting it. Not because I think it's financially worth it, but because a)it's being released at my birthday!; b) DT is my favourite band and c) the European version will take 4 to 5 weeks to ship, which caused them to allow purchasers to download the album on the Friday before the album's release (the 9th of August).
So, in my opinion it really all comes down to three questions:
1- Do you have the money?
2- Is there nothing else better you want to do with it (like buy 10 other albums or going to a concert, I'm not talking about saving here)?
3- How much are you willing to spend to download and listen to the CD earlier (1 day in America, 4 in Europe)?
If you have the money, there's really nothing else you want to spend it on and you will become a nervous wreck for the duration of those days you could've had the album (and a lot of people are already discussing it here), getting it is probably a not so bad idea.

As far as I know, it is worldwide. My source: the pre-order European site, which also says you can get one of 50 tickets for life. So that either means that the site is lying to us, that there are 50 tickets spread through America and Europe or that each region gets 50 tickets (for a total of a 100).
Looking back, I didn't really answer your question, but I still hope it was somewhat helpful...

That's true, but the same argument is also usable in favour of the Box/Ticket: what if the Ticket for Life actually worked as a perpetual Meet and Greet package with VIP seats?
Maybe it's just me, but I fail to imagine a winner just entering the show with his golden ticket and there being no fuss about it.

I really hate that all nice box sets these days seem to include vinyl, a format that is completely useless to 99% of Americans under the age of 40.

That's absolutely not true: you can play Frisbee with it.

???  That's because there isn't one.  I'm not sure what there is to worry about.  If you want the instrumental disk bad enough, buy the box set.  If you don't, then there you go.

Not really.  Turntables are a lot more readily available now than they were a decade ago.  Most have a USB port so you can connect them to your computer.

BlobVanDam

To me the vinyl is just there for show, and for collector's value. Vinyl looks better with the bigger artwork, but I'm never going to listen to it, even though there is a record player in the house.

Sure, but who wants to play records these days (other than an extreme minority of so-called audiophiles)? It's such a tiny minority of people that buy vinyl that it makes little sense to me to always include it in box sets.

To me the whole point of the boxset is to be the "complete package". If you don't want to pay for all of that stuff, then don't buy it, and stick with the regular CD/DVD.

Ask Bosk1 suggests, vinyl has been having a sustained resurgence in popularity over the past several years.  It's the "in" thing right now.

Plus I guarantee you people will try to sell their "ticket for life" for stupid $$.  I know I would.

I wouldn't sell it. That's crazy.

ZBomber

I've been listening to vinyls for a long time. And recently a LOT of people are getting into vinyl. It's not a dead medium at all.

So yeah....

snapple

If I could sell the ticket for serious cash, I would. I mean, like life-changing cash. But I know I won't get it/get that much money.

ytserush

You can canabalize by keeping what you want and selling the rest --which would make it a little more affordable.

Me? I'm interested in the vinyl and the lithograph (The lottery ticket too, but that doesn't factor in my decision.)

As of now, I'm just getting the CD/DVD and I'll wait however long it takes for the eventual markdown on the box set.

Your mileage may vary...

Madman Shepherd

My dilemma is that I decided to buy it but now I can't find a Roadrunner Records discount code that will work.  Can ya help a brother out?

BFRedrocks

Finally bit the bullet and ordered this (didn't know about any RR discount codes though  )

Just curious...did folks choose the free shipping option that says it could take 1-4 weeks in the US, or did you spend the extra $14 to get it in 2-8 days?

Guitalguy

Box set for me, and I'm in Europe. I'll probably die from waiting for the mail. And I'd really want to have the booklet in my hand as I listen to it the first time, and now I wont be able to even have it in a physical format for many weeks. That's why I actually consider running down to the record store on the 13th and buy the CD as well, it isn't that expensive.

Did anyone say that Europe gets the digital download four days before release?

It's 4 days early compared to the US release. lol.

You'll just get the digital download a day before the CD is available in Europe.

"Due to the high quality of the box set, it will be shipped 4-5 weeks after release, but to ensure you still have the music a digital copy of the album will be sent to you on the Friday before release."

i hear you. i only got the cd/dvd special edition because i have no use for the vinyl stuff. if you're worried about getting stuff on time, i wouldnt. i called roadrunner's store and asked them if it would be here on time and they said they were going to ship the regular stuff out a week before its supposed to come out. they also said the box set would likely be delayed.
