No your right. Pink is just sitting there, empty, nobody's home.

SDV is the same.

A poor use of samples (IMO) is on 6:00. God I hate those.
I normally turn the volume down during the samples if I'm listening to it with someone else. It drives me insane. It wouldn't bug me so much if they didn't repeat it so many times! "6:00 on a Christmas morning!" times four is more painful than just one "6:00 on a Christmas morning!"

SDV is one of the songs I like the least on Awake.  I will never understand what people see in it.

That said, I don't think the samples make it any worse than it already is.

I get flamed for it every time. I just don't get what the thrill is of this song. It's dull and filler material. It sounds very emo. Skip track

i always thought of it as a lonely guy hopelessly watching tv with nothing else to do

Yeah, very The Wall, imo.

I love Space Dye Vest for the feeling of pure emptiness and depression. It's not an "emo" song (What the hell is an emo song anyway? Because by that definition, a few SYL songs could qualify).

Also, the samples are the most incredible part of the song by far. I have no idea why, they just fit so well.

The surrealism of it fits perfectly...a facile attempt at humour provides an ethereal contrast to the mood of despair exuded by the rest of the song - something analogous to seeing the sun rise after a night on which a loved one died, and witnessing what should be a sign of hope and renewal drained of all redeeming qualities by the horrible circumstances surrounding it.

I dunno, the juxtaposition of the sample and the rest of the song seems Coen-brothers esque to me. Some of Kevin's lyrics reflect a certain detached but humorous relation to upbeat Americana - a kind of 50s optimism meets 90s Gen X nihilistic despair situation, good cheer vs hard reality, a quality which I find present in the Coen bros films...whatever, I like the song.

Cool Chris

Um... maybe some of you are kidding, but I think you guys are really reading way too much in to a 7 minute long rock song.

The atmosphere of the song is great as it is. The lyrics and the music do just fine conveying that. That last sample pulls me out of the song, like it is trying too hard to convey imagery that is already there. It takes it from excellent musical statement to high school songwriting project. The 'he doesn't' love you' sample is good, the others are not. And that 6:00 sample is the most annoying of them all.

And what the hell was up with that gif a while back with the black dude and Bert??
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.
