Oddly enough, inspired by this post:

I love OTBOA to bits, I think there's only a few songs since Octavarium that equal or exceed it, but the BAI teaser is on a whole other level. Even just that single minute is chock full of everything I love about DT.

I guess my point is, in the time since the band decided to self-produce, what represents DT's best work?

I chose Octavarium, because maybe the whole album isn't that great, but the songs on there that I do like are some of their best, imo.

SFAM is gonna win, but for me SDOIT is just DT at their best in every aspect.

Super Dude

Changed the title because it was a tad misleading.

Because I didn't mean for people to assess it solely or even mainly on JR's presence, even though the era change to me coincides with his addition to the band.  And "What's the best self-produced album?" seems to me awkwardly phrased.

Ah. Well luckily I didn't take it that way and just voted based on the album, but I see your point. :tup

I have hard time deciding between SDOIT, TOT and 8VM, DT's best 3 albums IMO. I'm inclined to say SDOIT though
\o\ lol /o/

Top 3:

1. Scenes From a Memory - I don't really consider it a modern era album.
2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - A very interesting album, I really like it.
3. Octavarium - Most satisfying epic, the rest of the songs are nice, although some of them have very noticeable and strong influences.

Its hard for me to rate the rest. I feel that the recent albums rely too much on the "epic" of the album.

Zydar

Scenes, closely followed by Six Degrees.

I wouldn't consider SFAM a modern era album (being 12 years old), but since it's on the list, I am compelled to vote for it. Second would be SDOIT, which, I probably wouldn't consider it to be a modern era album either. After that, I'd say 8VM.
I think the best way to break up DT Eras would be like so: Early (Demos, WDaDU, I&W, Awake, ACoS), Middle (Fii, SFAM, SDoIT, ToT (The era whence the change in evolution in their sound is most obvious to me)), and Modern (8VM, SC, BCSL, & ADToE)

I feel SFAM is more of a transition (remember that death is not the end it's only a... ok, I just couldn't use the world "transition" without this quote here) point than a full-on modern DT album. I think the album that truly pointed DT in the "modern" direction and kinda determined what happened later is Six Degrees.

However, from those on the list (or any album list in existence) SFAM is my favourite. Six Degrees is second (and my favourite if we didn't count SFAM), third place is a battle between Systematic Chaos and BC&SL I think.

orcus116

Six Degrees easily. It's a shame the band didn't expand on that level of experimentation right after getting the metal out of their system with TOT.

OsMosis2259

I chose Scenes.

Is Scenes considered modern though?

Fortunately we might be getting something more in that vein here soon...

No, wtf. We're not allowed to agree on something.

Here just take this and we'll never speak of it again:

Millais

depends how you define 'modern'.
i put Octavarium, because that would be my definition of modern.
although In the Presence of Enemies from SC does have that awesome futuristic riff...

Tomislav95

6DOIT is fantastic. All songs are great.

Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

There is just no question to this.. It's SFAM all the way, but Six Degrees is very close behind. That being said, I'd probably rate them like this:

SFAM
SDOIT
TOT
SC
BC&SL
8VM

6DoiT
Scenes
Octavarium
Black Clouds
Train of Thought
SC

Hopefully ADTOE will be above Octavarium.  That's my dream.

reneranucci

I voted Scenes, but all the albums are strong in my book and lovely in my heart, except for Octavarium which I never really liked that much.

Vajra

Six Degrees, with Scenes close behind it.

Okay, who chose Not Kevin Moore? :lol

Kevin Moore did. He lurks here, but he doesn't post. He just waits for polls, and always votes for the "Kevin Moore" option.
