Because I must:

- The first part sounds like The Shattered Fortress when the keyboards come in.
- Drumming sounds more MPesque to me on this song.
- The keyboard melody/pad/thing that comes in at :20 is tremendous.  I'm legitimately excited about the keyboards on this album, which is a first.  So eerie but matches the vibe of the riff just right.
- Honestly, I do think the riffs here are semi-generic.  BUT, we haven't heard them in the context of the song.  Maybe after the intro of the song they're the right choice.  OTBOA is kinda like this.  The riffs by themselves aren't super duper compelling, but in the context of the song they become interesting.  Who knows how that will work out here.
- JLB is so good just in this snippet.  I'm really happy to hear DT music where JLB is able to elevate the material with his full range of abilities as a singer, because on the last few albums those opportunities were a rarity.
- Cool MM beat in the verse.
- Overall, I know I'm gonna listen to it a bunch of times, and there's cool parts, but it's obviously not meant to reveal the marquee sections of the song too early, and that's fine.  It's what a teaser should be.  Interesting, provokes discussion, doesn't leave you feeling like listening to the whole song will be an exercise in inevitability (a mistake that the SC promo reel made).

Cool idea.

this may be a bad example but back in 07 when they released all those snippets thrown together for systematic chaos they had the beginning of the instrumental section of constant motion in there and i remember intially i didn't like it or was impressed. After hearing the full album version at 320kbps thats my favorite part of that song now and is an amazing instrumental section.

ultimately, this happens a lot to me and i won't judge based off a small selection of the entire song.

I love this riff as a transition sort of thing, or even a climactic sort of thing, but not really as the verse.

This. I kind of like it, not a lot, i´m not a fan of this metal/dark stuff in particular, but as a part of a song it can be great. What i really like of it is that even sounding heavy and dark it´s sounds cleaner than similar parts in SC or BC&SL. I like the sound, the production. And the drums!

Addy

I hate snippets. I won't judge a song after hearing 1 minute of it. After a couple of listens all I'll say is that to me it is something reminding of TGP, TDEN and Raw Dog, but of better quality. Didn't hear any Awake in it. And I liked OTBOA better, but again, it's just a snippet. By the way, hearing something like this assures us that we won't get I&W part 2 ;)

This is quite cool, I dig the choice :)

I like it.  It's Jordan's airy synth sounds that makes the clip work for me.  Good job, Jordan!

The beginning remind me a bit of ANTR.

The main riff in the snippet reminds me of the part where the "car crash" sound effect happens towards the beginning of ANTR.

ReaPsTA

Oh, now I remember.  The riff from :07 - :21 reminds me of the second verse riff from INTOG ("Straight is the path, leading to your salvation...)

I must say after a couple more listens, I have upgraded my opinion of this from "underwhelmingly meh" to "this is freaking awesome". REALLY digging mangini's drumming, and he comes through really well on this track. not just the pattern but the toooooooooone and the musicAaality...

Love that artwork, matches the mood of the music perfectly to me. Digging JR's synth sounds as well. I definitely get a modern DT vibe from this teaser (with a hint of Awake - :D), but it's different to recent output in that it doesn't sound so contrived. Can't wait for this album

That's quite the shift in opinion in a short space of time.

Just put "in my opinion" on the end of everything I say. It'll make my time here more withstand-able for everybody.

So am I the only one that after listening to this teaser, is REALLY happy that they changed the name to Bridges in the Sky rather than The Shaman's Trance?

it is quite a shift in opinion but Rich Wilson said the album as a whole was a grower yet the predicable postings either of "best DT ever" or "meh" start straight away after the release of just 1 minute of the CD (after OTBOA) . I know from personal experience it takes multiple listens of DT songs to appreciate them but that might be  cos im a bit slow on the uptake lol.

At the moment I like it.

Considering it's the exact same song either way, and they haven't even shown the chorus yet, how does it make any difference at all?

I don't know. The song sounds closer to Bridges in the Sky. Especially JR's patch around :20. If it were still The Shaman's Trance, I don't think it would match the overall feel at all. Just my opinion.

BlackInk

Awesome 7-string. Nice heavyness and I like the vocal melody even if it's not the most perfect ever in our four dimensions.

Yes.

CrimsonSunrise

Really hard to say from the short clip.... but... when James came in on vocals I instantly had a SC flashback...which for me means ...not good.  I'll reserve final judgement till I hear the entire piece.

A bit early to call imo, with only 1 minute out of 11 minutes, and no chorus (which is where any reference to either song title would likely exist).

Also, just noticed your username. WTF :lol

7StringedBeast

Just listened to it for the first time.  I really really like what I hear.  The whole vibe seems to be a lot less METUHL, and much more of a DT doing metal sound (that probably makes no sense to anyone hahaha).  Anyways, I really like the vibe that this song was putting out.  The riffs sounded really cool.  I'm excited for this new album, I feel like its going to be really strong.

The only problem I'd have with that is having to endure the annoying "whyy is ronald mCdonlad on the cover lol" YouTube comments.

This is true Haha. I don't know, I guess it was more just springing discussion. I'm really not that concerned with it either way.

Haha, it's a play on Bear Jew from Inglorious Bastards.

The clown looks completely out of place in the atmosphere of that picture cover, which would be great without it. I DON'T want it to become the new mascot of DT, and I really really hope it won't be in the forum theme later.

When have DT's album covers ever become "mascots"? It's just an album cover. Come 2 years time, it will be history, never to haunt your dreams again with thoughts of "can't sleep, clown will eat me".

As for the forum theme, well you could always go with the SMF default theme like I do. :hat

They haven't, but when SC came out, the ants were everywhere, when 8V came out the newton's cradle was everywhere, etc. I'd rather have the plane with the Majesty symbol on it as this "era's" symbol.

Hayden

Well, the crows have been recurring somewhat. First we saw them on the cover of 'Train of Thought', then they flew over into 'Octavarium', and then one of the bastards popped up on the 'Black Clouds & Silver Linings' cover. It's probably only a matter of time before we start getting those ants back, and then probably clowns after that... followed by doomed sheep.

bss4life15

Sounds like a SC song but instead of balls to the wall metal, it's more atmospheric metal

Eh.  It sounds pretty cool to me, I guess.  I'm vaguely and unfairly disappointed, just because this is absolutely nothing like what the title 'Bridges in the Sky' had me expecting/hoping for. But, oh well.  It does sound like a pretty cool song to me.

(Also, an Aniland thread got pinned.  I can't help but find that amusing.)

wammabe

I was already disappointed when I saw that it was a snippet. Never in my life have I been impressed or satisfied with a song snippet.
