Roll call for Dream Theater in Vancouver
September 28, 2011 @ Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Who's in?

PetFish

Nobody's in?  I think I have 5 Facebook people coming out.  I really hope we can sell this out cuz I've been disappointed with the music scene here for years in that we just don't go out and support acts like this.  Sure, a Rihanna can sell out 2 shows back-to-back here (20,000 x2) but we can't get 2,929 out for a Dream Theater?

westendken

I'm in! Meet'n'Greet this time around, Dude! Long Live DT!  :hefdaddy  :metal

westendken

Thanks. I couldn't remember the capacity of the QE. A step up from the Orpheum in size though. Was pretty cool seeing them in the big venue opening for Maiden.

Zoom E

I'll be there. I imagine they'll get a good-sized crowd. Think they can sell out the QE?

westendken

Yeah they been getting a little better known. I sure hope it sells out. They deserve it. Bands like DT keep their integrity first and foremost. It's still about the fans, ya know? And let's face it, whens the last time you saw so much talent on one stage at the same time?

Jarlaxle

I might be driving out from Saskatchewan to catch this show! Don't really want to spend that much money on gas, but if they aren't going to announce a Saskatchewan date or at the very least a Calgary or Edmonton I guess I'm in.

westendken

Wow that's a long drive,Dude. You must be a fan ha ha. I do Van to Calgary sometimes, but I'd be leaning towards a flight there. But like they say (I don't know who says), doesn't matter how you get there... as long as you are there. Good on ya.

Jarlaxle

If I can find a couple buddies, a road trip would be (almost) as good as the concert.  :lol

How long does Vancouver to Calgary take?

In my experience in Saskatchewan, there is literally no publicity for bands like this. Maybe a radio announcement every once in awhile but nobody listens to local radio these days.

PetFish

Still no advertising anywhere for the show but The Province actually had a review:

Despite the departure of drummer and co-founder Mike Portnoy, the progressive-metal virtuosos' 11th studio album finds them sounding more disciplined than they have been in a long time.  The 12-minute "Breaking All Illusions" shows how Dream Theater can weigh emotional resonance against algebraic time signatures.  "Far from Heaven" and "Beneath the Surface" are among the simplest and most poignant ballads in the band's catalogue.  B+

Not much but at least it's something and favourable.

I know Long and McQuade Music stores all over van are having a contest for tickets to the show, My aunt and uncle manage the Poco store there and they asked me if I already had tickets and I replied yeah i got awesome ones :P But anyway, I think in the music community around Vancouver the concert is being advertised!

PetFish

I finally saw an add in the Georgia Straight, 4x5", so a decent size.  And also a phone interview with MM.

What worries me is that when I go to Tickemaster and enter 2 tickets in every price range, to see how good the seats that are still left are, there are still a lot of great seats.  I get the feeling that the venue will struggle to get to even 50% capacity (2,000) and that would just suck and they'll never come back.  In Seattle they had to move to a bigger venue, in Vancouver it feels like it's too big and not even worth their time cuz it won't fill.

I really hope I'm wrong and can sell it out but "I have a bad feeling about this."

Scooterfruit

If you go to the venue's website, you can see it's mostly full.

Also I saw some ads on Commercial Drive the other day.

Can't wait!!

Could you please share a link? I wasn't able to find it. Thanks!

Looking forward to see everybody there :)

PetFish

I was going to suggest posting photos of ourselves here so we can try and meet up at the show but I figured it would be better to just post in this thread when you're here and say where you are (ie. I'm near the big stairs by the merch booth wearing a pink hat) and then maybe we can meet people that way.

Anyway, that's what I'll do when I get there.

I am with friends at row 3, JP side and will be wearing all black (oh yeah, VERY recognisable)

Thanks for the link. I checked TM yesterday and there were sigle tickets on row 6... I don't know how is that possible with what seems to be closed to sold out show.

Scooterfruit

Well, in the business, 90% is considered "sold out." But 'sold out' doesn't necessarily mean no tickets left. Either way, it's looking like it's going to be a full house, and I cannot wait! :tup

Jarlaxle

So I'm flying out from Saskatchewan, spur of the moment I bought tickets today. Anybody know if I can bring a backpack in, as I will only have some clothes and traveling stuff, no cameras or whatever?

YtseCullen

I don't see why not. As long as you get it checked and it has nothing that they wont allow in the venue I'm sure you'd be fine. See ya there man

Make sure you have a large ziplock bag filled with southern comfort in your gonch to drink during the show like we used to back in the day. Nothing can possibly go wrong. Trust me.
