A Dramatic Turn of Events
A Review by Horatio

At this point, DT has broken all illusions that they are anything but musical virtuousos. The flaws beneath the surface of any detractors' arguments have been exposed. And these detractors, once they hear this album, may raise an outcry, but their words will be lost. Lost, but not forgotten, however -- their words will be a footnote in the history of musical criticism, a necessary precondition. For to build criticism up, one must first break it down -- the highest criticism can only arise when the bar has been set the lowest, just as the darkest hour always comes before the dawn. And this highest criticism can only be achieved on the backs of angels -- angels far from heaven however, for these angels exist in the domain of men, around us. This is the life where we can see these critics every day, living among us -- the Kaels, the Bangs, the Eberts. And, no matter what may happen today, in the future all of mankind will know of this album -- Dream Theater will have bridges in the sky named after them, bridges which the coming flying cars will cross every day.

Really? It almost looks like he's smiling... And what the fuck is up with MM's face? It's kinda... different.

99 people have rated this album already at Prog Archives. How in the hell do they allow 99 reviews on an album that
has not been officially released yet?

They probably don't control the reviews? I mean, everyone can get on the website and rate it...

TheOutlawXanadu

Same thing on Rate Your Music and every review has been like .5 stars. :lol

I guess you haven't made it until people start actively rooting against you.

Stuff happens.

Anyway, some people seem to be saying that this album hasn't changed direction THAT much from the two previous albums.. but I'm hopeful anyway. Ordered from play.com yesterday, hoping it gets her 12th.

I've been trying to get the admin staff to fix it, but whenever they do more pour in. It's kinda out of control at the moment.

Yeah all hyped up albums have loads of ratings up before anyone has heard the album, and they tend to be all 5 star or 0.5 star ratings. :lol

Oh man. I just looked at the reviews for some of my favourite albums on Rate Your Music and a lot of them can basically be summed up as, "this music has thought put into it, therefore it is self-indulgent and pompous!".

blackngold29

I was always a fan of the FII review on amazon that said it 'wasn't possible to make those sounds with the instruments they claimed to use.'

I think this one is new:

Awesome review :tup

If it's true that they're playing up the prog and toning down the metal, I couldn't be happier.  On the Backs of Angels is one of my favorite Dream Theater tracks in a long time--I like it more than anything on the past two albums--and this review, if true, confirms my suspicions that they're moving back in the right direction.

It's hyped me up.

I will now review the new album, without having actually heard it:

It's awesomer than Hef.

"Jordan: You know, we had to make a choice. One of the things we did before we put the setlist together is that we all went around and made a list of the songs that we really wanted to play and Nightmare to Remember wasn't one of them. Nightmare to Remember is a long song and personally, given the choice of that or The Count of Tuscany, I feel more attached to Count of Tuscany, it's just such an open, melodic, harmonic song. Nightmare to Remember has a little bit more of the angry side of metal mixed into it, really super-dark, almost ultra-theatrical and I don't know, I feel like that's one of the things I wanted to kinda get a break from and let go of a little bit."

Nice :tup

Interesting to read in that Jordan interview that Ted Jensen mastered the album. His name is forever attached with Death Magnetic. Although, judging from OTBOA, he redeemed himself  :P

Reserved.  Just sent my review off to UG so it should be up within a couple of days.

Man, MM fits perfectly visually with the rest, sort of the same "we're cool geeks" look. MP at the very end had departed massively looks-wise from the rest (frankly, he looked/looks a bit like a washed-up 80s rocker with all his tattoos)

Negative review here. Gist is the same as other negative reviews: If you're a Dream Theater fan, you will like it, if you're not a Dream Theater fan, you won't.
