Does this practice bother you?

Yes
No

No, when DT say the song title in the first verse, its not that bad. When Porcupine Tree does it, for like EVERY FRICKIN SONG, it sticks out.

Good thing PT doesn't do that, then, eh?

This.

And I really don't get what the point is.

Seriously Aniland, what else would you call a few of those? It's not weird at all, this is something that happens to just about every band. It's the most normal thing ever. He would either have to change the lyrics to TCOT so they weren't at the beginning, or he'd have to name it something like I Want To Stay Alive, or Doesn't Feel Right.

Elaitch

It doesn't bother me. Honestly I never pay much attention to lyrics anyway, it's more about the music for me.

It's better than naming it after something that isn't even in the lyrics to begin with! Yes' recent album has a song titled "Life On A Film Set" and what you would perceive to be the title because it's a lyric that's repeated throughout the song is "Riding A Tiger", and IIRC, the title of the song isn't part of the lyrics at all.

I like it when bands do that. Led Zeppelin did it a lot.

To answer the OP, no, it doesn't bother me. But maybe it will now. :eek

Doesn't bother me at all. Why should it? I've never even noticed this.

ZirconBlue

Not only does it not bother me, but I can't even understand how it could possibly bother anyone.

The Silent Cody

That case doesn't bother my at all, I noticed that sometime ago, but it's just Their writing style. Other side, it would be boring of the title appears only in the chorus...

LOL. No it doesn't bother me.  In other news, I'm also not bothered by happy endings in movies.

Aniland's next thread:

'Is anyone bothered by DT epics with overtures?'

"Just wondering if anyone is bothered by this.  It really bothers me that in many of their epics they preview some of the themes that are played later on.  No one particular writer seems to be the main offender, it's just been a disturbing trend that I've noticed.  And I think it really just takes all of the suspense out of the rest of the song/suite/concept album.

Erotomania:  When they play the Silent Man melody, it not only ruins Silent Man for me, but it also ruins Voices because the whole time Voices is playing, even though it's technically awesome, I'm just sitting there thinking that Silent Man is ruined because the air has just been let out of the balloon back in Erotomania.  I ALREADY KNOW WHAT'S COMING! I could go on and on and on: ITPOE, pt1, Overture 1928 (don't get me started),TCOT(double-whammy since it has the song title in the first verse, BAH!).  What do you guys think?"

I'm surprised no one's acknowledged this, I thought it was pretty funny. :lol

Actually, what does bother me is pretentious song/album titles, like ?, (), Can Anyone Who Has Heard This Music Really Be A Bad Person?, or [untitled].  But I can't think of any times DT has crossed that line.
I agree, but the OP doesn't bother me at all.

reneranucci

I'm not familiar with all their songs but some stick in my mind because it is very prominent: Piano Lessons, Hatesong, Lightbulb sun, Waiting, Trains, Lips of Ashes, The Sound of Muzak. Not many, to be honest, the same as DT, and plenty of excellent songs in that list, so it makes me wonder even more how that could possibly bother anybody, especially if the song is good.

Songs without the tittle on the lyrics can be cool, but the tittle is usually somewhere. Some think it's lame in the chorus, others don't like it at the beginning, but the reality is that it doesn't matter at all.

Jamesman42

The fact that you misspelled "title" as "tittle" twice makes me giggle like a hefdaddy.

Well that's how it's written here in El Salvador :p

How in the hell is ( ) a pretentious album title!?
The answer's in the question, there.

What's more pretentious than an album title that tries it's best to stop it from being discussed in conversation? I mean, what do I even call that? Brackets? Parentheses? Open Bracket, Close Bracket? Do I just hold up my hands in a bracket shape and end up looking like some kind of magician, or mime photographer? Can I just call it "Mime Photographer?". It can be it's defacto name, like The Black Album.

Gorille85

Sigur Rós is probably the least pretentious band I know. The ( ) is part of the concept and I just can't think of a more appropriate title for this album. There's no words in the lyrics too. And I always say "between parentheses" btw.

LieLowTheWantedMan

I kinda agree with Blob. The whole concept just seems like they're trying way too hard to be mysterious. No song titles. A blank booklet. Still a really good album though so it doesn't bother me.

I can think of:
Your Unpleasant Family
I Drive the Hearse
Lips of Ashes
The Sound of Muzak (almost)
Trains (almost)
Lightbulb Sun (almost)
Hatesong
Access Denied
Disappear
Waiting
Dislocated Day
Small Fish
Even so, nowhere near every song. ???

I don't like the ol' my-band's-less-pretentious-than-yours thingybob all that much, but, er...

"All of the lyrics on ( ) are sung in Vonlenska, also known as Hopelandic, a constructed language of nonsense syllables (technically glossolalia) which resembles the phonology of the Icelandic language. It has also been said that the listener is supposed to interpret their own meanings of the lyrics which can then be written in the blank pages in the album booklet."

Sigur Ros are many things, brilliant among them, but I wouldn't count down-to-earth among that number.

nightmare_cinema

No, my friends and I laugh about it... we had bets when OTBOA was due for release as to how many minutes could go by before we heard LaBrie sing the title... I actually listened to it all the way through several times thinking 'oh, interesting... this time they haven't sang it' until I realised it was in the first verse or something, I could not see the wood for the trees :P

I just find it a kinda cutely cheesy DT hallmark, since I read the spoof 8vm/Mars Volta review on somethingawful... the review culminated with:

'This song epitomizes Dream Theater's awesomely literal-minded approach. "Luciforms" presumably describes bad things, based on phrases like "death factory," but The Mars Volta deals in vagueness. With those guys, a song called "Luciforms" will never detail Lucifer's legion forms. With Dream Theater, a song called "The Count of Tuscany" will always culminate in the Count of Tuscany announcing himself as the Count of Tuscany.' *lol*
