The only song in the world that has ever almost made me cry.

Do you, like, not listen to much?
I "do listen to much", and I feel the same way. Disappear's the only song that made me cry a little, Octavarium made me kinda misty the first few times I listened to it though. Other than those two, never happened to me.

Well, I don't relate much to SDV. I mean, not nearly as much as I do to Disappear. So yeah...

By the way (sorry about the double post) - they NEED to play it live. I don't know what MP was thinking, only playing it twice and then banning it from live shows, but I'm glad he left the band just because now I have some hope that this song will be played again.
Did he actually ban it?  I thought it was James' decision.
Well, I honestly don't know, I assume it was Mike's decision for two reasons:
1. He was really in charge of the setlists
2. I remember a time where he talked about how he hates playing sad songs during standard sets. Look at other quiet songs' playing count (The Answer Lies Within, Vacant etc)

Anyways, if this song won't come back to standard setlists, I hope it'll appear in those acoustic nights James is talking about all the time some day. I seriously want to hear it being played, at least once more.

I'm really hoping that Breaking All Illusions is a song similar to Disappear.

The Letter M

I think Mike's reason behind not playing "Disappear" more than twice was because he wanted the band to have that one song that was only played once and never again, but I believe he wanted to have it played for the DVD at Budokan, so they put it in that set list (after playing it in NY with the cellist, who also played "Vacant"/"Stream Of Consciousness"), so it got played twice.

Now the only song they've played only once has been "Repentance", AFAIK, while other quiet/slow songs like "Disappear", "Vacant", "The Answer Lies Within" and a few others all have less than 50 plays each. I mean, these are the kind of songs you don't normally stick in a set list for a band that's know for progressive metal, but they sound great on their albums.

I'd like to see some of these songs come back for more plays, but I'd be okay with them not being played again, because at least they're all on official releases (well, in the case of "Repentance", part of it on a DVD, and all of it on a Fan Club disc).

Are there any releases/bootlegs with Repentance? I've never heard it.

A small part of it appeared during Chaos in Motion, and the whole song was included in a bootleg recorded and released by the international fanclubs (the quality is pretty great to be honest).

However, in this one time they played this song, Mike sang the first row, James also sang a little bit, then Mikael Akerfeldt sang the rest.

This song is definitely top 5 DT for me. It's a lot of fun to sing and so, so very sad!

This, but Beneath the Surface.

good song really nice.

Is there something wrong with me if I've never cried to music before? It doesnt even remotely bring that outta me. Songs like Octavarium and Disappear will sometimes make me thoughtful or even more determined to do be driven. IDK I don't get sadness from them...or any music.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I keep mixing the two up.  :P

millahh

Probably a top 10 for me.

Sometimes it really bothers me when they wear their influences on their sleeves, but in this case it doesn't (if you don't know what I'm talking about, go listen to Radiohead's Exit Music (for a Film)).

I don't think the alien riff is so much an alien riff as it is a lonely, empty cry.

Sketchy

I should loan out my love for Dissapear, as I have so much of it.

It's a wonderful song, and one which really does need more playing.

Millais

for me, beginning drags on a bit. normally anyway, for me it's considered as one of their weak songs.
but listening the other night, in the right mood, i considered it as one of their best.

Frosthawk

Definitely one of my favorite Dream Theater song. Listening to it after losing a loved one is soul-crushing.
