To Live Forever and Speak To Me

yorost

All of the Majesty demos plus some other pre Labrie stuff are missing.

I checked Yste Jame records, and all the demos pre Labrie are from Majesty, so they technically aren't Dream Theater demos. I would have also had to make a bunch of other polls, which I was too lazy to do lol.

The Way it Used to Be.  One of my favorite songs.

Majesty is Dream Theater.  They changed names, not bands! :lol

Anyways, Don't Look Past Me, even if you did add everything else.

Plasmastrike

Hmm..

Eve and Raise The Knife, for sure.

edu

Raise the Knife! I remember hearing it for the first time in Score. Love it!

pmahoney1337

I voted Don't Look Past Me and Eve and forgot to vote for To Live Forever (I would've replaced Eve for it) :(. Love the guitar solo and overall feel of Don't Look Past Me and James sounds incredible on To Live Forever.

Nick

To me there are three B-sides that stand above the rest as phenomenal.

They are Don't Look Past Me, Raise the Knife, and Speak to Me. I had to axe one for the poll, which was Speak to Me.

Have you heard the studio version of To Live Forever with James on vocals? That song is a near-masterpiece. How it didn't make the final cut is beyond me, same goes for DLPM.

They felt that those two songs were not strong enough to be put in the album, and as a consequence decided to write Another Day and Surrounded. Not two of the songs you would commonly wish had not existed, I guess  :lol Life is strange...

Nick

To Live Forever is a good song, but I don't think it's on the level of the three songs I mentioned.

snapple

Another Won. It honestly describes DT in won song.

Evo

Don't Look Past Me, by a landslide! It's one of my favorite DT songs...

The final cut of Images and Words had about 15 minutes of empty space, there was plenty of room to fit To Live Forever, Don't Look Past Me, and Eve on it.

FsF

Don't Look Past Me and Eve: Kevin Moore at the peak of his proggy powers. Pretty darned good selection of non-album songs, really speaks for DT's quality from that period as a whole.

I don't think Don't Look Past Me or Eve would work well on I&W. They just don't sound like they would fit on it.

If "Wait For Sleep" had been a demo and not on the album, people would have said the same exact thing about that. It sounds nothing like the album, yet it works perfectly, so I don't see a problem with DLPM and Eve.

I was tempted to take issue with your list as well, but I'll just leave it be.  Incidentally, I voted Raise The Knife and To Live Forever, but I considerably like several of the others as well.

No it didn't.  Cassettes were still the primary format in '92, not CD's.  For a normal-length cassette, it was full.

I never actually knew that, and it makes me depressed for Images and Words since those two songs are exactly what drags the album down for me.

Nick

Well the thread starter didn't seem to be going back to the majesty demos, but if we do then Another Won would probably top everything.

Slain

Raise the Knife, no contest for me.

The Majesty demos have some amazing material, Another Won being one of them. Easily as good as some of modern DT. If they were to re-record the albums with modern production and James on vocals, that would be fantastic. (I'd also like the same to be done for WDADU)
