Great album. If I could leave out some awkward moments, it could really be a classic heavy metal album.
Which moments are awkward?

*Awkward to me/in my opinion; *a classic heavy metal album in my opinion. I'm mostly talking about, like, the second half of This Dying Soul and some parts/motifs in Honor Thy Father to be honest.

I know you meant in your opinion, no worries.  I was just curious what you thought.

The Silent Cody

The heaviest DT album ;) it used to be the best for me;) but it's still great great great  :metal :metal

Metal

I used to work at best buy (when I was in college) in the computer tech department (pre geek-squad) around the time this album came out. When LaB came out, they had a promo of 'As I Am' playing on ALL the TV's in a rotation with about 50 other artists.  I could instantly recognize that DT had serious talent, and I wanted to know more about them.  So I google'd them after work one night, and have been basically hooked ever since.  All my friends are metal heads, and I have introduced DT to a large number of people now that never would have known DT existed unless I had heard them on that BB promo.
I introduced them at parties and whatnot around the time, now, everyone that I know is eagerly awaiting any/every release they do, pre-ordering albums, etc.
ToT is an awesome album, full of great prog metal goodness.
Excellent marketing move by DT to introduce them to a new audience.

My 2nd favorite album after Awake.

Ranking:

'Endless Sacrifice'
'Stream Of Consciousness'
'Vacant'
'In the Name Of God'
'As I Am'
'This Dying Soul'
'Honor Thy Father'

I love this album. I think I'd rank it as...my 4th favorite DT album. Yeah, that sounds about right.

Train of Thought got me into DT. When I heard it I was really into heavy stuff. I don't think I would've gotten into them if I hadn't heard it first.

dbrooks22

imo TOT is DT's best songwriting effort of the new millenium.  Every album since 2003 sounds derivative to me... like they knew they got it right with ToT and were trying to copy and reinsert the same themes over and over.  I've been a DT fan for 17yrs, and this is the album i am constantly reaching for in the car.  It is also their most critically acclaimed work.

Mr. Beale

Can never get enough Stream of Consciousness :metal

?

TOT has some of their best metallic songs but it feels a bit one-dimensional when you listen to it all the way through. That's why I rank it 7th.

I actually got this album late (about a couple months after it was released).  When I finally did get it, it was awesome.  I even got free tickets to attend the concert.  A buddy of mine knew someone who worked at the venue.  That was an awesome show.  I haven't listened to it for quite some time, but it's got some great metal tunes no doubt.

Infinite Cactus

While I don't listen to this album as much as I used to, it was still one of the first albums to really get me into and solidify my love for DT.

Firsts times i listened to it i thought it was too metal, and became my least favourite DT album (with WDADU). But now, i think it´s a great album and probably i underrated it because it´s very heavy and aggresive and maybe it´s not what i look for in a DT album. There are great songs in it.

Jamesman42

Top 3 album for me. Some days it could be #1.

I love ToT. It set out to be a single minded metal album, and that's exactly what it is, so I can understand why fans don't like it, but as a metal fan, I think it's great.
As I Am and ITNOG have always been among my top DT songs. As I Am is a straight forward metal song, with strong riffs, the classic flattened 5th, and JLB singing like himself yet still fitting the song perfectly. And that guitar solo is godly.

The rest of the album I usually have to be in the mood for, but every time I hear TDS I'm reminded how much I actually love the song.

DJay32

What do I think of Train of Thought?

I think it's a beautiful album in every aspect. The melodies are superb, the solos are just enough, the lyrics are emotional, the unisons plenty, the mood is just right.

It's the perfect balance between "too much unisons" and "too complex" for casual listening. It's a brilliant album to put on in the background. Plus, the whole album gives me big ..And Justice for All vibes, and that was one of my most favourite albums of all time.

"As I Am," perfect opener, gets the mainstream listener interested, has a kickass motif. Lovely solo.

"This Dying Soul," movement four has fantastic melodies. Movement five, skipping the quirky vocals, is unbelievably intense. @W@

"Endless Sacrifice," pure beauty all the way through. Excellent verses, perfectly heavy chorus, amazing instrumental section, great unison afterwards, great bridge, yeah!

"Honor Thy Father," about as heavy as Dream Theater's gotten. Lyrics really speak to me, hard as hell to sing along to, got a lot of complexities, and then DAT CROOKED STEP SECTION.

"Vacant" could be no better. Chilling intermission and prelude.

"Stream of Consciousness," one of the greatest instrumentals I've ever heard. The ..And Justice For All influence is especially prevalent in this song.

"In the Name of God." I have no comment on this, because to comment on this would be to taint the goddamn perfection. Dat guitar solo. @W@ *kneels*

So yeah. Train of Thought. I prefer it to Scenes from a Memory, and I prefer it to Awake. I honestly do.

ToT has changed the minds of couple friends who were thinking DT haven't made a decent album after Awake.... When they heard ITNOG, I saw the expression "What the Hell" :o on their faces.....

it has been my favourite album for so long.....

That last minute of This Dying Soul...

BlobVanDam

It's pretty amazing, but I don't know that it's quite as awesome as Spiderman and The Flash bumping uglies.

Seriously though, I love TDS, but that last minute should have been chopped.

And that gif is amazing.
