My fav used to be Scenes, even after 6DOIT came out.  Now, it's 6DOIT.  :2metal:

While SDOIT has more replayability and wider range of ideas, SFAM trumps it as a complete package, has better flow and hits me in a more emotionally resonant way.
That's kind of a blessing and a curse for SFAM, I think. That yeah, as a whole, it's absolutely amazing. But that's how you have to listen to it, from beginning to end.

Still, I'd pick the best songs on SFAM over anything on Six Degress. Home and Dance of Eternity are dead ringers.

Easily Scenes From a Memory.

Disc 1 of SDoIT vs SFaM might actually be a tough question.

PixelDream

SDOIT easily wins when it comes to vocal melodies. And that remains the most important thing for me when listening to music with vocals. SFAM has quite a lot of awkward moments in that department. I think JLB sings a lot better on SDOIT as well. Production on SDOIT slays SFAM. There's more experimentation, whether that's good or bad is entirely subjective, but I like it.

The way I see it: Disc 1 features some of their most 'complete' and most realized songs. Actually, all 5 songs are instant classics in my book. Then you got disc 2, which basically takes the suite/continious piece of music idea of SFAM but makes it even more symphonic. SFAM is a bit better, but it definately is a very great piece of music as well.

So yeah, SDOIT. It has more to offer, sounds bigger etc. Disc 1 and 2 in succession is a bit too much though. SFAM has the best flow for one single listen, no doubt.

My top two albums, but SFAM takes the cake. While The Glass Prison might be my favorite DT song, Scenes is a more cohesive package and my favorite concept album.

Every song from SDOIT makes my top 30. Every song for me gets a 10/10

That would make SFAM an 11/10 then?

Scenes From a Memory.  Every moment of that album is great.

SDoIT?  Well, the title track is fantastic, and the rest are...okay.  Honestly, other than the title track, I don't see what people like about that album.

SFaM is an easy pick.

Production wise I prefer Six Degrees. Musically and lyrically I prefer Scenes. I am just not a huge fan of the Six Degrees disk 2. If the second disc were different... i would place 6 over scenes

JasonScandopolous

These are my top two, so it's hard to tell.  I enjoy SFAM maybe 5% more than SDOIT overall.  If I were recommending one to someone else, I'd expect them to like SFAM more than 5% over SDOIT.

necrotomist

SFAM is more focussed imo, so I'm going with that one. Still hoping that one day they'll do another grand concept album like this one...

SFAM for sure. 6DOIT is a nice album don't get me wrong... But it just isn't the same as SFAM.

Um....yes.....because it is a different album.

Wait....Wut? Different? Copmpared to....? How does one extrapolate from that? I mean, careful what you wish for; it might just have horrible, ironic consequences and suck or something  ::)

What gets me everytime is the instrumental section of Solitary Shell. Little does Nicholas know - this is what Victoria was actually Manigi'ing about.  :mangini:

My two favorite DT albums...I normally rank SFAM above Six Degrees, but I really like them equally. I use the fact that Scenes is a concept album as the tiebreaker. :lol

I think the first disc is better than the second.

SFAM and Six Degrees are in a constant battle to be my favorite DT album. I voted for Six Degrees though.

This.  Six Degrees connects to me much more.  It also has everything I love about DT!  The experimental stuff, great progressive arrangements etc.  It also shows each DT member right at the top of their game.  Fantastic album.

Six Degrees. But for some reason I voted Scenes from a Memory.

Yea, I've always felt this way too. Misunderstood, Blind Faith and Glass Prison are some of DT's finest imo. While 6DOIT (the song) is great and all, I seem to get bored of it quite often.

SFAM is my #2 on the ranking, while 6DOIT is #3. So, close call but SFAM gets my vote.

Frosthawk

I love Six Degrees. It really encompasses everything there is to like about DT for me. Scenes is good too but it seems like I have to be in a certain mood to really appreciate it.

SFaM, in a blow out.

Honestly, I buck a lot of the traditional wisdom; for me, the title track is the only song I go back to when I play 6DOIT.  SFaM though just works as not only a total package but has some killer tracks I play a lot on their own. I kind of find the first CD of 6DOIT to be a little, well, dull.  :o

Vajra

If 6DOIT was a 10/10, then SFAM would be a 9.99/10

The funny thing is, I find myself listening to the entire album of SFAM more than I do 6DOIT, but I find that 6DOIT has a greater selection of better songs. The reason I listen to Scenes more often is because I really like how the whole album flows as if it's really just one giant song, so I find it easier to listen to it in its entireity. Scenes as a whole though, I don't think is as strong as 6DOIT, I find every song on that album to be near perfect.

Just curious, why do you rank Scenes so low? Obviously you don't care for it much compared to their other albums, but I'd be interested to know what about it makes you feel that way.

ibosmiley

Tough one.  Very tough... hmmm... There's always been something about SFAM that I've loved.  The album as a complete whole is an awesome work IMHO.  I do like 6DOIT too though... particularly the first 5 songs which sometimes seem to play second fiddle to the title track.  Overall though, I think I'd give it to SFAM by just a smidge.

(SDOIT is my new #1 as of today, I thought about it earlier :lol)

Though I can't speak for ariich, and I feel Metro Numero Dos is one of DT's stronger albums, musically, I do not enjoy its lyrics/story very much.  It just doesn't appear to me/make much sense/ seem to have anything to do with Metro Numero Uno.

I, for one, find the 00s albums to have much better lyrics, on average, than M#2, though some of the lyrical low points are just as bad, if not worse.

SFAM as #8 and #9 on an all-time DT list bamboozles me.  I'm bamboozled.

Jamesman42

It never did anything for me on the whole. Some great parts for sure, but as a whole? Not for me.
