Kind of an odd question, but they both give me the same vibe/atmosphere and I think I may like them exactly the same.

wammabe

Trial of Tears, they don't really give me the same vibe though...

Trial of Tears is like, one of the ten best DT songs.

Aniland

I wish I felt that way too. I ranked it at #67, right under "The Test That Stumped Them All".

What an odd thread.

That's how I initially felt too.  But even though the songs are very different, I have felt since first listen that ITBOA gives off a strong FII vibe and reminds me in very general terms of TOT, so I get it.

As far as rating the songs against each other, although I like OTBOA, I have to go with TOT for 2 reasons:  (1) At least superficially after a few listens, OTBOA does not feel quite as dynamic and epic as TOT; and (2) OTBOA is in the unfortunate position of not having years to grow on me as TOT has.  It's still too new to unseat such a longstanding favorite.

Pointless thread. Anyway, I made the effort of listening to Angels again, and it's still incredibly boring, lame, lackluster, insipid, forgettable, etc. And Trial of Tears is still excellent.

EDIT: Wow, I didn't notice those fast transitions after and before the chorus sound awful.

Same. Very hard to tell, I think that OTBOA will grow much for Us, but now I have to stick ToT, anyway I still think that OTBOA is very solid track, one of the best DT singles.

This. The only similar things are the very beginning of the intros.

Not the biggest Trial of Tears fan, it's a good song, yeah, but it's nothing incredible for me. I enjoy OTBOA more. Controversial opinion time! :D

But yeah, these songs really aren't similar at all, this is like asking if I like Home better than Wither.

TheGreatPretender

Trial of Tears is for all intents and purposes one of their long, progressive epics.
And those are usually dead ringers against the "single" type songs in my book.

reneranucci

It's incredible to think that DT have so many great songs that ToT might not even be in my top 15.

On The Backs Of Angels doesn't have that awesome instrumental section*, and furthermore isn't Trial Of Tears, so Trial of Tears all the way.

*I'm aware that Petrucci was a little over inspired with his solo, but I don't care.

wasteland

On The Backs of Angels is cool, but Trial Of Tears is among the five best DT songs ever composed.

Trial Of Tears is absolutely incredible; but OTBOA doesn't need to hide from it, although it's not as good as ToT.

This. Not that OTBOA would though.  :P

One thing I'll say, the atmospheres in OTBOA compare favorably to ToT.  The choir/string patch and the ambient patch with Morphwiz in the beginning are both incredible.

I still can't get into that Morphwiz intro.

BlackInk

Interesting, when I was going to vote I had to really think for a while. I went with Trial of Tears though because it's more dynamic and that is what I want from any Dream Theater song.

PS Head

Trial of Tears without question......very Xanadu/Rush at the begining with an incredible instrumental section.Thats not to say OTBOA isnt a great song...it just doesnt have some of the elements that make ToT an incredible song. ;D

Odd thread indeed...

On the Back of Angels is a great song.

Trial of Tears is an amazing song and one of their best ever.
