And surely it is the job of the cover to appeal to it's market.

it is?

i thought it was what the artist felt/wanted for the album.

But would they not want it to appeal to their audience? It's a form of advertising, surely. A good cover can grab the interest of passing trade. Fans will buy it anyway, whatever the cover.

But do kids these days even buy CDs anymore? I thought they downloaded everything.

Good point. They will never know the joy of trawling through rack after rack and finding a jem of an album they never expected.

Maybe the intent is to create the illusion that there's a deeper meaning.
From the looks of everyone's opinions, the illusion is that it has no deeper meaning.

Well, can't wait to see how the forum layout is going to look soon to match the album cover  :lol

Saw the full quality cover. Anyone notice the rope "ends" on the left edge of the screen without going out of the frame? Bad photoshop.  :yeahright

I like the cover, but can't believe they let that slip. Or maybe they are nugget pixels?

nope, they steal. I buy though :)

Jaffa

They only download music because they're embarrassed to buy albums with bad artwork.

This post is completely untrue.  Probably.

WOW, that!! I'm shocked, I haven't noticed that before, we probably don't see this on the cd because it's on the edge so...

I'm more interested in where you saw the whole cover and whether I can have it. I love gigantic album art.

On the subject of the big cover art, I made a wallpaper out of it (simple crop job), and it looks a LOT more effective without the top or the bottom.

Funnily enough I've been using the big version as a wallpaper too.

lol where did the majesty symbol go on your wallpaper?
oh wait never mind, if you enlargen it it's gone

chrisbDTM

i am really warming up to the cover. at first i didnt dislike it, but i wasnt crazy about it. now i think its kinda cool. the bright colors are refreshing

Guitalguy

I must say I'm no big fan of the cover. I liked the covers in the style of I&W, Awake and BCSL, where elements on the cover represented the content of the album, and you could sit and look for metaphors and symbolism for a long time.

Althoug, I guess there's some symbolism in this one as well. The plane obviously refers to the song Beneath The Surface, and Far From Heaven, and On The Backs of Angels both have something to do with heaven or something like that.

Lost Not Forgotten probably is a direct referance to MP, quite obvious. One can't be absolutely sure until September though!

Zydar

I kind of like the cover, at least the brightness and the blue color. It's a nice change of pace from the darker themes (and clutter) of ToT, SC and BC&SL. I like clean and minimalistic artwork. And I'm sure I'll get used to the guy on the unicycle.

Yeah, I like the cover too. Especially the blue/brightness that Zy mentioned.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

Faustusmedea

MP is a "clown" who attempted to walk a tightrope with all of his side projects and the tightrope kept getting higher until A7X where the tightrope was skyhigh. Dream Theater is the plane/in the plane. As a jet, it represents speed, power and is a preferable mode of transport for musicians to a unicycle. But the plane is also represented as a shark-like tail fin breaking the surface. Common wisdom says sharks have to keep moving or else they die and thus it was with DT. DT is not in a real shark because they would be eaten/dead and that kind of ruins it for me.

The rope did break, though the circus performer does have a multi-colored parachute and other circus-friends, not pictured here.

Interesting :) I laugh a lot in a last line  :D

Tunnel Vision

I'm with the crowd that really likes the artwork. It might not have all the nuggets that previous covers have had, but I like that it is a change from the dark covers in the past. To me, it really changes the mood of the music if the cover is bright and happy.
