Im thinking The Glass Prison would be most fitting. Its a great intro song

kirbywelch92

I could very much see The Root of All Evil as a possibility, despite being a Portnoy tune.

Ben_Jamin

I think it'll depend on how much time they get for each festival. If its over an hour, i can see them playing ANTR. I could see all 3 audition songs being played.

Infinite Cactus

I'm gonna go with an unrealistic option and pick New Millennium. It'd be a cool opener. 6:00 would also be nice.

FretMuppet

Or go with a classic opener with Pull Me Under

I think a song like Metropolis would send a very strong message. However they'll probably do a JR era song.

I would love to see them open with Metropolis.  :metal

ricky

it could be anything, but if i had to guess in the dark, it would be with the majority.

either the glass prison or pull me under.

I could definitely see ANTR given it was a tryout song and an awesome opener, but given DT used it as thief opener for all the BC&SL shows I can also see them changing it up.  I would like overture 1928, that sounds cool since its an awesome instrumental.

lodeus

I hope they have cool intro song on the new album.

In fairness! A. That's a brilliant riff to open with, and B. the lyrics are pretty damn appropriate.

"I'm alive again, the darkness far behind me,
"I'm invincible - despair will never find me!
"I feel strong, I've got a new sense of elation -
"- BOUNDless energy, euphoria fixation!"

'Course, it's a reprise, so it's about as likely as them opening with ItPoE part 2, but nonetheless. Would kick magnificent arse.

Also, the more I think about it, the more likely PMU or Metropolis sound. It's a festival, so they'll need a shorter song, which will instantly resonate with the existing fans along the lines of "Dream Theater's back!!," and brief the newer fans as to precisely what they can expect from the coming gig. Edge to PMU: it's a powerful statement - catchy but mindmelting, which is precisely what Dream Theater are about - and it's not like it doesn't have an established record of bringing in new fans.

They've been jamming on Metropolis lately, so I imagine they'd be more likely to keep that arrangement and leave it to the end. Not to mention, it's probably leaning a little too close to the technical side and too far away from the catchy side to be the perfect introduction to a festival gig. Good for fans, though. And to close, once everyone knows what they're about.

I think it will be A Nightmare to Remember.

And, as I predicted before, I think a Mangini drum solo will replace the "day after day" section, which will serve two purposes: it will showcase the new member with an unaccompanied solo (which they have done for other new members before), and it will cleverly eliminate the Portnoy vocal section from the song.

I agree with incorporating the solo into the cookie monster spot.  For an Opener.... hmmm....  Glass Prison would be awesome  :metal

Chrissalix

As I Am.

Lyrically appropriate and there's a drum solo slot after Petrucci's guitar solo. Nightmare is also likely considering they auditioned drummers with it.

6:00 and New Milennium need to open more shows.  But for the European dates, I'm with tri.ad, it will probably be Overture 1928.

I think it will be Overture 1928 for the festivals and On the Backs of Angels for the album tour.

I would like to see 6:00 as opener in the festivals. Kick ass drums and it highlight Myung too.

check out this video, they start playing @2:03 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiGoIgUPejI

I could imagine Mangini doing that closed hi-hat bit at 2:13 with one hand

haha, i imagine mangini doing a 15 secs drum intro and then get into the 6:00 intro, kick ass opener for sure. and the way they played it live in that video have a lot of energy.

GasparXR

I would like Overture 1928 AND Strange Deja-vu as the opener, personally. For the tour, I'm thinking On the Backs of Angels like most everyone here, since it's probably a great album opener.

I'd like to see them open with 'The Mirror'. That not only is a killer song, it'd immediately throw everyone on the web into a tizzy wondering if it had some sort of 'hidden' message behind it.

DejaVu

I hope it's going to be PMU in all fairness, it could give the message of 'a new start'. Because that's when DT really made an impact, and I think it would generally be a killer opener to get everyone going!

If not, I'm placing bets on ANTR, it really wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Space Dye Vest.
Damnit you took mine. That would really be a curveball.

CrimsonE

As interesting as it might be to break out a new song as an opener, they'll certainly save that for the regular tour when the fans will be more familiar with the new material.  For the festival gigs, they're almost certainly going to go with an old standby, which likely means As I Am or Metropolis.  They'll also probably play Pull Me Under, although I don't think it will be an opener.
