Why the hate for Raw Dog?

Alright, I'm not going to try and argue that it's an album worthy, amazing tune, but it's definitely a fun song, and fits really well with God of War 3. It's on the same level as, if not better than what it reminded me of- Megadeth's version of the Duke Nukem theme song, another heavy instrumental tune that goes along with the game it's made for. It's a shame that it isn't featured anywhere in the actual game, and that it's only on the GoW3 soundtrack.

The name is pretty cheesy, no doubt about it. But am I alone here on this one?

Vajra

Inspirational and moving? No
Fun and head bang worthy? Hell yes.

Metabog

It was in a terrible console game.  :corn

Wrong!   But I guess that's not what we're arguing here...

Jamesman42

Love it. Great fun, lots of cool little things going on. And that bass wah pedal. :metal
\o\ lol /o/

TheKillingHand

Love it!! Definitely not album material, but its fun and badass! I'd love to hear them do it live!

Regarding not album material, this would've worked well on SC or BC&SL IMO.

It fits right into the "So Energy! Powah!" category.

wolfking

It's just very boring and uninspired, I'm not a fan.

Aniland

I think its a pretty cool song.

I like certain things about it. I like the beginning with the keyboards. It's one of those songs like A Nightmare to Remember that I think would have benefit heavily for a little editing here or there. Maybe shave off a minute or two.

And for once I will agree with Aniland...

Because it's terrible music

chrisbDTM

i like it. the solo tapping is perfect

Raw Dog is a song I can play when I'm feeling a DT song of straight metal and ridiculousness. :metal

jdprsaga

I just can say that from about 5:49 to the end of the song it sounds like an endless epic fight between two mythic creatures.. If somebody can not hear that.........

So if that doesn't fit the theme of the game.. nothing else can.

JayOctavarium

Raw Dog = God (of) War (backwards)  :neverusethis:

I like it. Dont Love it... Dont Hate it... can see bits of it used in an instrumedly type thing

FretMuppet

Kosmo

It sounds like a compilation of rejected ideas.

Portrucci

It's terrible. A hallmark of all that was really going awry with Dream Theater at that time. Lifeless riffs...overproduced blandness. A change definitely needed to occur....and I think the band is in a much better place now.

MajorMatt

Love the riff @ 1:23, makes me want to smash shit up :hat

Whatever you might think of the song, it was definitely not a worthy exit song for MP.

I sort of agree.  It would have been a little more poetic if TCOT was the last we heard of his drumming.

But it's not like he did a bad job on Raw Dog.  I actually really like a lot of the drumming.

That's exactly what it is.

nikatapi

Awful production, the song is just a copy paste of random ideas into one song.

Technically, I guess yeah (although I think they did write some of it in the studio).  But the combination of the ideas has a flow to it.  And honestly I'm shocked some of these were rejected.

Awful production,

What!?

Ι think drums sound like shit, and i don't like the guitar tone either. I also think it is a bit brickwalled.

Sixtease

Oh I love raw dog. Hell, I hate condoms!

I'm listening to the song for the first time now on YouTube and I actually do like it, although it's totally unmemorable. It's quite a headbanger, and the sound kicks ass. Brickwalled? Yes. But in this case, I don't mind at all.

Bolsters

S'ok. I'm not a big fan of it but I have felt compelled to listen to it every now and then since I got it.

I think the knowledge of how the song came to be didn't exactly help. IIRC it was written and recorded in a matter of 3 days.
Opeth on the other hand put a really good song on that album.

Great, I had finally managed to make myself forget that Raw Dog even existed, and then this thread had to come along :lol

EpicCookie

I think the problem with this song is, is that it doesn't really sound like Dream Theater... It's not a bad song or something but I don't really like it, maybe it needs some getting used to?
