I don't want to be 'that guy,' but I'm genuinely curious, so... try not to hate me for it?

I haven't been on the DTF for long, but since I've been here it seems to me that Never Enough is among the most universally disliked DT songs.  I'm basically just wondering why.  Maybe I'm just stupid and missing something blatantly obvious about it – I do tend to be pretty thick about understanding music sometimes – but I don't see what's so terrible about it.  I mean, I'm not in love with it, but... I dunno.

Can anyone explain for me?  And feel free to insult me for being an idiot and/or bringing up a tired subject.   ;)

You have your answer. I think most of the fans just don't care about the song. Nothing terrible, nothing memorable. Some hate it, some love it, but the majority just skip it because they don't care about it.

At least that's how I see it.

KevShmev

I can't speak for others, but I think this is one of those occasions where really bad lyrics are a detriment to the song.  If this song had even average lyrics, it is musically interesting enough to where I think it would be less disliked than it is.

Exactly this. Musically, it's not bad at all, but the lyrics tend to throw me off.

M-boogie

I agree with you guys on the lyrics but the unison makes up for it ;D

The Silent Cody

Never Enough has a great opening section and awesome unisono, as it mentioned here before ;) Lyrics are...hm, just bad ;) To sum it up, song is just medium ;)

CrimsonSunrise

I likes it just fine!  :tup  But then again... I like "You not Me" too.... :yarr

The Silent Cody

Don't worry Crimson, I like You Not Me too   :yarr

Infinite Cactus

I feel like aside from being a very Musey song, I kind of hate the meaning behind the lyrics. Well, actually I'm fine with the meaning of the lyrics, I just hate the fanboyish NEVAR ENOUGH whenever you don't agree/like something about the band.

RG93

I dislike Stockholm Syndrome Never Enough because JLB is trying too hard to be Bellamy and the lyrics are basically MP whining.

JayOctavarium

I used to love it. both musically and lyrically. Then I realized what the lyrics were about, and then I hated it. Now I like it... sometimes.

Ah.  This probably explains at least two other DT songs that I like but DTF seems to hate.  I'm glad I asked.

Thanks for explaining, peoples.  The lyrics thing makes sense.  And it also explains why I like the song - lyrics and meaning rarely matter to me as long as the music's good.  Thanks again for answering!  :)

m0hawk

Bad lyrics don't bother me any more. I'm more concerned with the vocal melodies and the actual melody. And in that regard, Never Enough works. Best part of it is in the second verse = the guitar work there is great.

That said, Stockholm Syndrome >>>> (by quite a large margin) >>>>> Never Enough. I'm glad Portnoy liked Stockholm Syndrome enough to shadow it. To anyone who hasn't heard the song in question, I suggest you listen to it IMMEDIATELY!

Mladen

I for one love the song, it's one of my favorites on Octavarium. It's incredibly catchy, chorus is amazing, and as you've already pointed out, dat unison!  The lyrics are great if you don't see them as Mike's whining about fans, but rather as a huge ''fuck you'' to ungrateful twats in your life.

robwebster

Yeah, I think it's lush. That unison is the hidden gem of Octavarium. They're firing on all cylinders... but, subtly. Which is true of much of the album, in fact.

Gadough

I like it. I don't love it, but I like it. It's a good song.

This is the problem, I think. How is a fanbase expected to like a song that disses the fans? Obviously, I know he's not referencing the entire fanbase, rather just a small portion of it, but still...I can definitely see why the subject matter could turn some people off.

Could not agree more. Plus James rules on this song, his most overlooked performance of the last half dozen albums.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

King Postwhore

I don't mind the lyrics at all.  I read some posts that brought on this lyrics and don't have a problem with Mike's response especially since DT is a rare band to release a mind blowing amount of stuff for us fans.  I like that music and like TAC said, James vocals are great.  I like JP's solo also.
"I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'." - Bon Newhart.

IdoSC

I personally like the song a lot. But if I'm a betting man, I'd have to assume the hate (from other fans) comes from 3 "sources":
1. The lyrics are basically judgmental towards a certain kind of fans.
2. The verses, the vocal melodies and the overall atmosphere of the song might remind people of a Muse kind of atmosphere.
3. I'd say the song could be slightly improved musically at certain spots, maybe the chorus, but I've only seen one "hater" talking about this in the past so I can't tell if it counts as a reason.

Overall it's a decent song, probably in the middle of most people's overall top lists. But it's of course easier for people to talk about negative lyrics aimed at the fans themselves, rather than a song with standard lyrics. My point is, the fan reception for this song might be a little more ambivalent than other songs', but it doesn't mean people particularly hate it musically or lyrically.

Aniland

Nobody likes it when someone called the wahhhhmbulance. And Portnoy pretty much did that in the lyrics.

Likewise, if anybody on this forum or any other decides to follow up a dissenting post with "never enough", I immediately stop regarding that user.

yorost

:lol I like the lyrics, or at least the theme of them.

I like this song as well for that reason.  It fits in with a number of DT songs that I really enjoy that seem to be relatively unpopular that all have a similar lyrical meaning, You Not Me, As I Am, and Never Enough.

...maybe I like them because most people in my life piss me off...

Jamesman42

I like everything about the song. And the buildup to the unison and the unison itself is one of my favorite moments on the album

LaBrie also rocks the song.
\o\ lol /o/

Best part of the song:

"What would you saaaaay
If I walked awaaaay"

Good song.  I like it a lot.  And I have no problem with the lyrics at all.  They aren't "bad" by any stretch of the imagination.  They are melodramatic, but that doesn't make them "bad."

I never bought into the "oh, these lyrics are only meant for a select few people". I got the impression this was directed at a lot of people (including band members), and as such the lyrics grate on me.

The inch-thick irony is of course that he eventually got the answer to the question he asks in the chorus. Only that he probably didn't like the answer.

I'm with you guys on this.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I dig the song. Shame it doesn't traslate as well live IMO.

TheMadgician

I actually really like the song. Sure, the lyrics are a bit dickish. But I can overlook it for everything else the song does right.

jonny108

The song isn't bad.  Average, nothing special really.

Ironically, I hate the chorus in this song and I love the verse. I don't know, it's just incredibly annoying with those drawn-out long melodies.

Cut myself open wide
Reach Inside
Help Yourself
To all I have to give
And then you help yourself again
And then complain that
You didn't like the way
I put the knife in wrong
You didn't like the way
My blood spilled on your brand new floor

What would you say
If I walked away
Would you appreciate
But then It's be too late
Because I can only take so much of your ungrateful ways
Everything is never enough

Sacrifice my life
Neglect my kids and wife
All for you to be happy
All those sleepless nights
And countless fights to give you more
And then you say how dare that
I didn't write you back
I must be too good for you
I only care about myself

What would you say
If I walked away
Would you appreciate
But then it'd be too late
Because I can only take so much of your ungrateful ways
Everything is never enough

I've always liked the feel of this song...it's different and decently exciting AND I always liked the vocals/interesting melody as well. In fact, I had no idea the lyrics were so god-awful until I read the previous post because they're phrased perfectly in the actual song. The actual lyrical content is a downer but oh well :D (disclaimer: I love Muse but actually prefer their ballads/piano driven pieces over their synth up-tempo rock).
