Hi I'm sort of new to Dream Theater. I started listening after seeing them with Iron Maiden last year. I got special edition versions of BC&SL and Systematic Chaos, and I was wondering if there are special versions for the other albums? Thanks.

Nic35

If my memory is correct there are none.

TL

As far as I know, there are not special editions of the other albums. All of the albums prior to Systematic Chaos were on a label that didn't really bother supporting the band.

On another note, welcome to the forums!

yeshaberto

cool way to discover DT...welcome to the Forums!

Aniland

I think Roadrunner introduced it to Dream Theater first, which is pretty cool of them. I'm grateful that they're on this label.

I wonder what sort of extras will be on the limited edition of DT11.

What's on the special SC edition?

DT is currently signed to Roadrunner Records and they make all of their artists offer Special Editions of every album they make.

So in other words, the latest 2 albums are the only ones to have Special Editions.

And by this, TL means all the albums prior to Systematic Chaos were from a time before every CD ever had to come in a special edition package.

To be fair, I liked the special editions of both RR albums.

Me too, and I like Special Editions generally, so I hope we get one with DT11.

I'm pretty sure that we'll get the special edition DT11. My dream is seven different special editions DVD, each one with every drummer being auditioned :) ::)

wolfking

I'd be happy with another making of dvd, with lots of recording footage.

You really want to purchase the album 7 times?

Not as such, but sometimes import versions have extras.  I think the Japanese FII came with a bonus disc, for example.

JediKnight1969

The new album deserves a very special edition. I would say a "Fucking awesome ultimate extreme" box: kind of, the full Mangini audition (right now the other ones are not that hot anymore), the making of the new record, maybe a live double CD from the last tour, demos, a guitar pick, a T shirt, whatever! Anything!

Honestly no ;) but I would like to see all of the auditions :)

I would love to see a special edition consisting of two CDs, including both a dynamic mix and an ipod/car/whatever-enhanced "hot" mix. This way we'd get the best of both worlds, and everybody could choose for themselves whether they prefer to have their music dynamic or optimized for listening in loud environments.

Slightly related to that, I put some hopes into Richard Chycki's involvement with the new album. He seems to be well aware of the problem of music being "crushed to death at the mastering facility" (quote).

(BTW, this is my first post on the forum. Last time I posted on any Dream Theater related forum was back on alt.music.dream-theater. Thanks for the good work on dreamtheaterforums.org! :-)

I hope the next special edition consists of a bluray with 20+ hours of footage.

Making of DT11: Entirely filmed and edited by JR on his iPhone

TL

I definitely hope we get some kind of really cool special edition with DT11. At the very least, it will probably include the 'Spirit Carries On' documentary.

yesrushdt

I'm all for a making of video for the special edition. Video of all of Mangini's audition songs would be pretty cool as well.

The Letter M

I think anyone wanting Audition stuff shouldn't expect with the new album. Last I heard, RoadRunner was looking to release a DVD of the 3-part Audition Series, along with some "bonus footage", which for me would be awesome if they included every drummer's audition (3 songs, jam time, and riff time), but that would be about 45-60 minutes of footage for each drummer, depending on how long the jams/riffs were and how the footage could be edited, meaning anywhere near 7 hours of bonus footage could be used. I mean, I'd shell out a lot of money for a 2 or 3 DVD set of the Auditions, but is RoadRunner willing to sell something like that?

Either way, I'm pretty sure there will be some sort of Making Of DVD for DT11, considering how special this album is going to be/has been so far, especially considering how different the writing is compared to the last few albums. I'm just hoping JR or JP got some footage during their writing sessions!

Ye gods.  I would kill for that to become a standard thing to do for special edition releases.

1989 -WDADU - Only re-editions
1993 -Live At The Marquee - Japan edition with "Another Day" instead "Surrounded"
1994-AWAKE - Japan ed. with bonus disc with "Eve"
1997-FII - Japan ed. with bonus disc with "Take Away My Pain" (demo) + "Speak To Me" (demo)
2002- SDOIT - Japan ed. with  .. I don´t know. Maybe a edit version of "Solitary Shell"?

This, with the two special editions mencioned before is the "Specials"
The singles have japan editions too, but it is another thing.

(I don´t remember more....)
