Perpetual Change

The thread on the remixes had me thinking again about what a lost cause the original DT Greatest Hit album was, especially since the guys (I guess Mike?) seemed to have pidgin-holed themselves into organizing the songs by the "heavy" and "light" side, which, in all honestly, wasn't really a good idea since the best Dream Theater songs are those with passages that progress back and forth between the spectrum of heavy and light.

Here's the rules-- Two 70 minute CDs. Or one if you're feeling especially daring!

I'm gonna do mine like this: the first disc is a greatest hits album. the second disc is more hits which would be like bonuses for diehards.

Disc One: Greatest Hit and 10 other cool songs.

1. Pull Me Under
2. Surrounded
3. Erotomania
4. Voices
5. One Last Time
6. The Spirit Carries On
7. Blind Faith
8. As I Am
9. Panic Attack
10. Constant Motion
11. Wither

Disc 2: Live, b-sides, and other Previously Unreleased material
1. Also Sprach Zarathustra
2. In the Presence of Enemies Part One (Live)
3. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream (Live- Rotterdam bootleg)
4. Eve "
5. Trial of Tears (Live at Budokan)
6. To Live Forever (same on greatest hit)
7. Don't Look Past Me (perhaps a rerecord?)
8. Won't Get Fooled Again w/ Queensryche (Uncovered Bootleg)
9. Metropolis (Live- Score)

While I hate the Constant Motion/Panic Attack choice those songs are on Guitar Hero and now will probably have to be included in every compilation the band ever do as they're songs newbies might be looking for. I also thing my second disc 1.) makes up for the shortcomings of the first and 2.) includes a variety of material that most diehards will have, but many casual fans might not.

One rule for this thread would be to impose a pre-SC era rule, as the real Greatest Hit was.

The one-disc daring entry:

Overture 1928
Strange Deja Vu
Panic Attack
Pull Me Under
Misunderstood (Radio Edit)
Hollow Years (Live at Budokan)
Innocence Faded
As I Am
Peruvian Skies
The Spirit Carries On
Metropolis Pt. 1 (Score Version)

Should be just a bit over 70 minutes.  Put in some concert favorites, a good representation of their heavy, prog, and melodic sides, and the song everyone knows from Rock Band 2.

Sixtease

Perpetual Change, that's a great great disc #1

My compilation:

Disc 1:

Pull Me Under
The Mirror
Lie (edited)
Anna Lee
Home (edited)
Metropolis part 1
Solitary Shell (edited)
In the Name of God
A Nightmare To Remember (edited: strip 3 minutes off solo)
The Spirit Carries On

Disc 2:

The Glass Prison
A Change of Seasons
The Count of Tuscany
Trial of Tears
Learning to Live

It was "Dark" vs "Light".  And I don't think he used those categories to pick which songs to include.  I think he picked the songs and then decided which disk to put them on based on the light/dark categorization.

Ok, I went ahead and limited the list to pre-SC.  BTW - this was tough to do.  I pulled something from every album (which may have left a few better songs on the cutting floor).  All versions are JLB voiced.  Disc 1 are "standards", Disc 2 are "epics".

Disc 1
1   Pull Me Under
2   Panic Attack
3   Caught in a Web
4   Afterlife   WDADU
5   The Dance of Eternity
6   As I Am
7   Under a Glass Moon
8   Peruvian Skies
9   Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
10   Solitary Shell
11   The Spirit Carries On

Disc 2
1   The Glass Prison
2   A Change of Seasons
3   Octavarium
4   Learning to Live
