Do JL, JP, JR, and JM have an obligation to the other 6?

So, for future side projects, do you think the guys feel the need to or should call on at least some of the 6 drummers that did the audition but didn't get chosen?  Like JP's next solo CD he'd have Donati on it or JL's next solo project would have Lang on it?

At the very least I think they should be considered and offered the chance to play on future side projects.

Nick

That don't have any obligations, they offered to let those guys audition and paid for their travel and such and those guys accepted, there's really no question about it.

SystematicThought

No not really. However, a few have hinted at future collaborations with a few DT guys

No.

Why?

Riceball

I don't think they have an obligation, but for some of those who they had pretty good chemistry with (at least as far as we can tell from the YouTube vids) I can't see why they wouldn't.

SnakeEyes

What a strange question and point of view.  No offense intended..... it's just a.... strange opinion that DT members "should offer the other drummers the chance to play for future side projects."  An audition is the musical equivalent of an interview.  The potential employer (in this case, DT) evaluates you and chooses the best person for the job.  When you go to an interview and don't get the job, do you feel that the person who didn't give you the job is "obligated" to give you another chance just because you had that one interview?

Adami

No.

That said, I'd love to see a JR and Donati collaboration, as well as something with LaBrie, Petrucci and Lang. That would be amazing.

No obligation at all.  It's an audition, it's a very common process.

Basically what everyone said. There's no obligation stemming from a simple audition. If DT or some of their members want to play with some of the drummers who auditioned (like MaMi), they're free to choose who it is, when they'll do it etc.

PetFish

Sounds good, I certainly don't feel like they ALL deserve a chance but definitely Donati, Lang, and Minneman would be awesome to hear more of on a future side project.

Re: OP

You're basically saying the other drummers deserve a consolation prize?

blackngold29

Not an obligation, but I can't help but think a few of them had good chemistry with a few of the drummers. I would be glad to see some of them collaborate in the future. Perhaps it could turn out that they were auditioning for more than DT.

jamhet

Those drummers should be grateful for the recognition and publicity they were given, not the other way around. It must've been beneficial for all of them regardless of the audition outcome.
They were given a huge opportunity, DT wasn't given anything by them.

I'd like Minneman to be the drummer for Liquid Tension Ex. - he totally fits the concept of the band.
And I'd like Lang to drum on Petrucci's solo album - John was amazed by Lang's drumming and the jam they had. And overall, in the audition videos, Lang has received the best comments from the band as regards the drumming alone.

If it came to such collaborations, still, it is those drummers that should be grateful for that.

Perhaps, but "I would love to hear it" doesn't equal "The band is obligated to do it."

Well, JR already did something with Marco. I'd also be shocked if Peter Wildoer doesn't play on James' next solo album.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

Tunnel Vision

I don't think they have any obligations to the drummers, but I think it would be REALLY cool if they could so some projects with them. For example, I'd be ecstatic if Lang played on JP's new solo album....that would be incredible to me.

I'd rather have Peter coming back for a second appearance in JLB's solo albums, and if not Peter then I'd like to have Mangini back in there. They both have done really well there, but I do appreciate Peter's performance in SI more. He gelled better.

Lowdz

I can see JP working with Lang, certainly, and it would be awesome. His work with Shane Gibson on the StOrk album shows that. From what I remember I don't think JR was a Lang fan, but JP and CJS certainly seemed to be.

I'm sure PW will be in demand in future, and he sure impressed me. I couldn't see him in DT before the audition videos (admittedly my only knowledge of him was CJS's SI) but he was a huge surprise. To not only cope with what DT threw at him, but to impress aswell, kudos to the man.

I'm not a huge Donati fan. not that he's not a fantastic drummer, I just don't like the way he plays. He seems more "jazz-like" to me and I'm more a fan of the rock drums approach.

The Presence of Frenemies

What really needs to happen is a JR/Roddy collaboration. Just iPad and blastbeats, with the occasional ragtime solo.

I'd be happy with any of those guys on JP's next solo record.  :metal

Schleppy

I'm interested in seeing if any of them get offers from other bands as a result of the documentary.

lucky7

Ditto for the above.

When G3 toured Australia JP had MP on drums, it would be interesting to see after JP releases his next solo album and tours who will be his drummer.
Is LTE extinct now?  :)

ricky

maybe im alone, but in a year or two I would love to see a liquid tension experiment 3.

ill whip out the term "dogs pants".

tri.ad

I really doubt that a third LTE album will happen in the near future. Given that it really was MP's idea and completely led by him, and given that his relations to two thirds of the rest of the project apparently aren't really good, it would be really surprising if they got together to come up with something anytime soon.

JP with Portnoy in G3 or LTE will be...... funny?
I think the ambient in a couple of years or so will be some type of dramatic.

This.  He did a great job on Static Impulse.  Loved his playing and cookie monster vocals.
