Yeah I originally was going to reserve 10s for only the absolute best, but seeing bs like people giving the entire Awake album 10s it's obvious that a song I was going to give an 8.5 or a 9 is equivalent to what some other people were giving 10s, so I went back and was much more generous. I think originally I had 10s for my top 8 (not a specific decision, they were the ones I just really felt deserved it) but eventually gave them to my top 22 (again, nothing special about the number, that just happens to be how many DT songs I think are on another level).

Unfortunately it is. I am first and foremost a "lyrics and vocals" guy - I will often not even really get down to hearing the subtleties in the music until after I've heard the song a dozen times. I just cannot for the life of me get past the lyrics in this song. (If we were permitted to rate the instrumental version instead, I'd probably give this an 8 or 8.5.)

EDIT: This also explains my ratings of Sacrificed Sons (lyrics), TDEN (lyrics + vocals) and ANTR (lyrics + growls). Yeah, I'm "that guy".

I consider myself a DT fanboy as well, but I went ahead and decided to rate the music in relationship to DT's other catalogue.  If I had rated them in relationship to my other musical tastes, I would have bumped most ratings up a point or two.

When I did my ratings I just went by a rate it and don't think about it method.  When I went back and reviewed my ratings I think I got most of the songs right.  The album ratings are interesting to me.  The two albums I would probably have rated highest if you asked me for album ratings
(Awake and SDOIT) were rated 3rd and 6th.  According to my song rankings Oct and SFAM were my two highest rated.

It'll be interesting to see what the totals are.

I was watching the 2009 poll results... and I think that the result will be totally different if you make a poll for fans who follow dream theater since a decade and another for the modern fans, and I guess that there are more members in this forum that like DT since no more than 10 years ago...
beacuse how can a song with 3 minutes horrible guitar shredding and keyboard noises like a nightmare to remember be ahead of finally free, SDOIT!!!, pull me onder, erotomania, surrounded, etc...
anyway... that is my point of view
I already voted.. cant wait to see the results!!!
