Awesome Documentary, strange that the video does not work on Ipad.

The albums sales were high yet he wanted a hiatus.

Dream Theater is not one man.

I'll say it again, MP's departure has been the best thing for the band: Dream Theater.

Super Dude

I was a little puzzled at them saying in the earlier teaser that DT is the biggest band in rock of the last quarter century. Although I suppose they're the biggest band you've never heard of. :lol

I thought he said "one of the biggest progressive bands" or something like that.

"They have been ROCK ICONS for more than a quarter of a century!"

I thought it was interesting that MPs comments from Chaos in Motion about touring "can get stale" were edited in. Very implicit in a mass media kind of way. I also thought it was interesting  Rudess mentioned MP asking for a comeback after 5 years. I thought MP said in an interview he wanted a break 'till mid 2012. Is this a small detail , or are these guys not on the same page?

FYI - on YouTube you can change the format to 'Desktop' from the main page and it allows the video to play on mobile devices (with the appropriate requirements)

RuRoRul

My guess is Portnoy wasn't very exact about how long he would want to be on hiatus, something like "a few years", and Rudess said the thing about five years as a slight exaggeration or as a worst case example, because it makes their decision more understandable. Also Mike might have gone the other way with his statements and implied a very short break to make his idea seem more reasonable.

I'm pretty sure one of the interviews stated it was originally pitched as indefinite hiatus, but when the other members balked, MP suggested increasingly shorter time periods.

From what we can gather, he suggested an indefinite/undefined hiatus, expecting it to be around 5 years or something, and when the guys weren't happy with that, he suggested a shorter one.

When Rudess made the comment in the documentary, he wasn't saying that MP suggested exactly 5 years, he was very obviously saying that number as an example to make the point.

I think its FRIGGIN GREAT ALL AROUND GETTING TO SEE THIS . and seeing JM speak WOW!!!! LOL
But besides that I love mangini even more that took any doubt i had about him playing with DT.

DoctorAction

I think this is an amazing thing! What a fascinating view into this part of the band's history. I had my mouth open and was laughing in delight during most of ep 1. Can't wait til tomorrow!

Really, really interesting to hear someone else doing Mike's parts and see the remaining 4 DT members interacting - and there are 6 more episodes to go.

I believe this is the case as well, there's no way MP would suggest 5 yrs. LOL

yeah I doubt he'd suggest 5 years. They were all ready to head into the studio and pumped for the new album while MP wasn't, which you can see in the documentary on their faces. To be fair though, it was pretty much a good thing, because it shows that they were all "Well, we don't want a hiatus, and DT isn't just you, so what ya gonna do?" he replied "Might as well leave, then record half-ass drums."

Maybe they just had enough of his antics off stage within DT land, and understood he needed his time off.

The Hiryuu

The trailer was HORRID. Made it out to be significantly more melodramatic than it actually appears to be. Now that I've seen some of it, it seems like a cool, down-to-earth look into the inner workings of the audition process like I hoped it'd be before I saw the trailer.

VioletS16

BEFORE EP.1:
"Man...I don't know about this Mangini dude. I like Peter better"

AFTER EP.1:
"Dude, I love Mangini!"

I'd watched a bunch of drum videos but I had never known how much of an awesome dude he was. Still love Peter but I like Mike a whole lot better than I did before!

Cannot WAIT for Ep.2.  :corn

The best part was at the end...."On the series finale." While that will definitely make most fans say "WHY OH WHY DT." Its just too funny, like the trailer, I just laughed at it.

Heh, it was so logical to me (last episode and stuff) that I didn't care about its corniness anymore. The documentary itself is fine, so this little previews aren't disturbing imo.

I was expecting the deep ass voice from Repentance.

Sad it didn't happen.

Well, apparently "Heavy Blog is Heavy" isn't a fan

And any of us should care why?

You're right. Just was an irritating article (the blog was terrible too) that came up as I searched for the second episode. Don't understand any reason why a DT fan, or a fan of music in general would think this is anything different than an extended behind the scenes look for the fans.

Well that's exactly it, that guy isn't a DT fan and says so in the article.

What a poor soul, wasting his time like that (even if it probably wasn't that much). Oh well.

Disclaimer: That post shouldn't imply that I'm a fanboi at all.

Apparently, their readers are.

All four comments go "whoa! easy tiger, this shit's ace."

Commenter James hit the nail on the head. It has been "cool" to hate/make fun of DT for years, and I can't help but thinking that this blog post was made for the purpose of riding that wave.
