My biggest problem with it is that the volume swell section is too long and sucks away all the momentum of the song.

I love that section.  I think the simplicity of it brings out it's beauty and fits with story incredibly well. :)

Same, it's probably my favorite part. The way it builds into the next section is perfect.

Tomislav95

Best song of BC&SL and maybe best after Octavarium album

I imagined a green sunny park.

Interesting I've always imagined a marsh or swamp, which is kind of more depressing and doesn't really fit with the silver linings bit.  I wonder if they are going to play off of the final sounds of BCSL for their next album, maybe starting off with the bird sounds.

Not a single post SFAM track would make my top 10, and the only one that would have any shot at the top 20 would be SoC...

ricky

um.

what does that have to do with tcot?

changing_seasons

The Count of Tuscany is my top 1 Dream Theater song.

utopiarun

This my first post so please be gentle!

I said no, it's really good but not a top 10. My reasons: the volume swell thing is way too long IMO. And I am not a lyrics guy but these are really cheesy.

welcome to DTF!

i agree that the the lyrics, at times, can be somewhat cheesy, but what i've found out is that looking at the song as a whole is essential. how the lyrics, music, solos, everything - fits together, and in that respect, it is an awesome song. Everything seems to fall into place.

LieLowTheWantedMan

Not top 10, but close. It's probably my favourite DT song riff-wise.

orcus116

Not even remotely close to top 10.

Gadough

It would have made my Top 10 if they had cut out the atmospheric noodling about 12-13 minutes in.

gadough, you my homie, but i got to call you out on this one.

i luv rudess and his cosmic orgasm atmosphere greatness.

I think so.  When BCSL came out, it was easily in the top 3, but now I think it would be around 8-10.  I agree that it's the best on the album, but if ANTR had ended after the Beautiful Agony section, that would have won.

darkshade

Musically, it's a near-perfect song. The vocals in the chorus are hit or miss for me, but I dont mind them. I voted yes, but TCOT usually alternates between 10, 11 and 12th place. I think ANTR is a hair better

Not even remotely close to top 10.

I am liking the way you think. This song stinks!

Interesting, its cool that we all imagine different things.

top 20 - instrumental version

HA, I feel like a tool because the volume swell section is one of my favorite parts on the entire album along with the second section in ANTR. Maybe I'm just an ambient/down tempo weirdo. I did initially laugh at the lyrics, of course, but it's almost like I no longer hear the words anymore...just the vocal melody. Definitely around sixth or seventh on my top bajillion.

My daughter texted me today from college..."dad I'm totally addicted to the Count Of Tuscany" which I find TOTALLY
COOL! So anyways it prompted me to pull the album out and man oh man I really LOVE this song. I think it's among
the best of modern era DT. As of this point in time it does belong in my top 10 DT songs. Just amazing!
Me and your daughter have something in common.. :P

TheOutlawXanadu

The beginning of the song is legitimately amazing. The rest of the song is amazing in a Tommy Wiseau's The Room kind of way.

Not in my top ten, but then again, I am the original unseasoned fan...

Don't feel like a tool.  That's a cool section.  If some other people don't like it, that's OK.  I'm sure you dislike parts of other songs that they adore (as do I).  That's what makes the world go round.

Last I ranked, it was number 3.
Same. TCOT, ACOS and 8V are always my top 3 (although I'm not sure how they would rank against each other)

Frosthawk

I'm also a first time poster so hi guys!

I would say TCoT doesn't quite make it into my top 10, but it's very close. Like a lot of others I absolutely love the last 5 minutes or so, and the first 3, both of which I say are among the best musical passages DT's composed since SDoIT imo.

Welcome!

And I totally agree with you on all accounts.

Jamesman42

Top 5 song for me. It is just so good that I cannot describe it.

Regarding the swell section, I think it is fantastic. There is great atmosphere thanks to Rudess.
\o\ lol /o/

xShammas

Definitely a top 10 song for me. Being the best on the album, and better than some of the other "album bests".

James, my man...  So far I think you're the only veteran DTF member to actually have it in their top 5. You've just earned +all my respect.

Hit that one right on the nose Ricky! I hate it when people diss this song because of the lyrics

Heretic

It's definitely in my top ten... probably one of my most listened to DT songs, despite the length.
