Just curious  what everyone's favorite rendition of the song is live or studio

Imo TTT is probably the most inconsistent song in their repertoire.

My favorite version is from the bootleg KM please come to the stage, labrie's singing of the pensive fear verse is impeccable and rivals the album version.

Do you know where I might find said bootleg? I was going to say the album version. Even back in the day, he seems to slightly struggle throgh that verse.

No live version I've ever heard comes close to the studio version.  I always thought the "Take the time" in the chorus would be something the live crowd would always sing loud enough to where the band didn't have to sing it, but it has never turned out that way.  Combine that with the second verse being difficult for JLB to nail live (when they actually attempt it) along with Portnoy often ruining the first verse by singing the first half of the first verse, and it is easy to take the studio version over any live version.

wasteland

I would say that this may be one of the best performances of TTT, at least vocally. It is close to the album version as it can be a song performed live for the very first time.

The Live@Tokyo version isn't bad either, IMO  ::)

After watching those... the studio version wins.

Studio or demo version definitly. Studio version is pure awesomness, demo has some great vocals from JLB... I hate video version, I feel like I would listening to a shortcut of the song...  :\

I've never heard an absolutely stunning version of Take the Time live.  There's always SOMETHING wrong with it and it's always LaBrie that's the problem.  Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's necessarily his 'fault,' but I just think the song was written way too high for him to perform consistently night after night.  It's almost inhuman how high that vocal line is and to do it on a tour every single night..... I can't even imagine that.

?

Studio version for me too. There's always something missing in the live version: in the I&W days James could sing the song very well, but there were no backing vocals on the chorus, nowadays there's back-up singing, but James has trouble with the high notes.

Lol, a great one performance of TTT, didn't saw this. JLB in good form, JP a little bit to quiet when not soloing but what the hell. And, first of all, great performance from JR! That was time when KM gone and JR replaced him for some shows right? That video is before A Change Of Seasons release?Am I right? ;)

Studio without a doubt. Like others have said the live versions just don't really come close for a variety of reasons but:

TTT/Freebird

this version definitely matches the fun of the song the most.

Mladen

The one on Chaos in motion is great. Yes, it misses the second verse, but the rest is just perfect, and James nails every single tone.  :metal

This.  In fact, this is the only song in the DT catalogue that I can think of offhand that I would categorize this way.

tri.ad

It has to be the studio version for me.

Metabog

This is just one of the songs that doesn't work well live, imo.

Kick Into a Dream bootleg (NY 10/28/94).  It was the first time I heard Evenings of Mist, and really appreciated Derek's sound and role in the band.  What a jam.

KM Come to the Stage:  damn, they are playing the song at double speed, never heard it THAT fast.

JR first gig:  That video must be the same source of the MP3 i got back in the 90's, cuz it too has no guitars in the mix. Hahaha, the MP3 however does not have the intro about KM becoming an astronaut, lol

Really? I could think of a lot of songs where the studio versions are superior. They're one of those bands that rarely create a live version of a song that transcends to that next level.
