I have no idea if this has been talked about already, so my apologies if this is a repeat.

I was wondering what the new DT album would sound like, and I realized that "Raw Dog" was the last track that DT wrote, right?
So do any of you think that the new album will sound similar to Raw Dog? Cause honestly, I think that'd be pretty sick  :metal

I think the sound will be totally different and nothing like Raw Dog.  So much has happened within the band since then.  They lost a core member and that affects the sound.  I assume it would sound more like Petrucci's Suspend Animation or FII since JP is really shouldering a lot of the songwriting load this time around.

Good point. Mike was no doubt the one behind the heaviness in their music.
I hope we hear something closer to WDADU or Images & Words (wishful thinking, I know)

Aniland

It better not sound like Raw Dog.

SystematicThought

Since Raw Dog was left over ideas from BC&SL, (I think that was what I read), I don't think we'll have to worry about it too much. It's out of their system.

Although, the production on Raw Dog wasn't bad, the drums had a punch and the bass was audible. It was well balanced.

I assume you've heard Jaws of Life...JP loves the heavy too...and JLB for that matter with SI.

I don't think that it would sound like Raw Dog at all. I think of that song as a one-time thing that most likely isn't to happen again.

I don't think so, Raw Dog is just pure heavy instrumental for a computer game, it's hardly even a real song. It does have good parts so there might be bits like that in instrumentals during heavy songs, but to be honest bits like that have been around in DT songs for a long time. But I don't think the whole album or any one song will sound like Raw Dog overall.

Ben_Jamin

Wasn't Raw Dog gonna have vocals?

Chino

I still haven't heard Raw Dog

Ben_Jamin

Its a good metal Instrumental, which will work well live.

The Silent Cody

Raw Dog...come in by my one ear and flow out by another  ;) new album probably will be different from RD, but I think it won't be so much different from DT's last two albums BC&SL and SC...

jsem

Well. SC was decent, BC&SL was much better than SC. I don't think they were THAT alike.

Ben_Jamin

It'll have heavy, gauranteed. But, most likely will have different song structures. The single might be in the same vein as Wither but heavy.

What I'm saying is the album will still be heavy, but also calm since the OCD, Ass and Balls are gone. Its gonna be different for sure, if it sounds something in the style of Cloudkicker blended with DT, i'd be happy.

DT has never sounded remotely like Cloudkicker so I'm confident that wouldn't be the case.

Ben_Jamin

It'd be a neat for one song. Of course not the entire album. The album to me seems like it'd be varying in styles, experimental, and down right metal.

This is true.

That'd be pretty cool though, at least for a song or two.

Consider yourself lucky.  It is not good.  Like "You Not Me"-not good.

Oh come on, it's not that bad. "You Not Me" is an awful song, but RD is quite tolerable.

It's so-so. But DT got totally overshadowed on that soundtrack by Trivium. STSA was a killer track.

I'd take You Not Me over Raw Dog anyday.

mittinagus

I'll say the new DT album will sound like Raw Dog but with a drum machine...  ;D

Dublagent66

RD was just something they whipped up for a video game soundtrack.  I heard it once.  It was ok, but not anything you would expect to be on an album.  A far cry from album material.

The Silent Cody

I've just listen to RD one mor time, and I must say that middle section of that song is very good....strange climate in the air, I like it  :xbones

Jamariquay

I like Raw Dog. It kinda blends together at times, but it's definitely a really fun track.

You Not Me is the better song, easily. I wish I'd never heard Raw Dog.

I realize that Raw Dog is not album material. What I'm inquiring is for everyone's opinions on whether the new album material will have the same sound as RD (for example, I found the keyboards to be quite different from what they normally sound like).

olliemedsy

RD is a very good song i think, but not for dream theater, but it was just left over riffs from black clouds. maybe it could be a bonus track on the new album, but that could be a bit weird seeing as it has MP on it :S

Agreed.

Not a fan of the song at all. Not musically and especially not sonically.

Rina

I'm not sure it would "fit" Dream Theater...

YtseBitsySpider

It will be somewhere between Octavarium and Elements of Persuasion.
The usual 8 track affair.
A couple epics.
A couple poofy ballads.
A power metal starter.
A wanky piano piece.
And some 20 minute finisher about a team of dogs racing in the Iditarod, discovering a long lost ship frozen in the ice....because of a MUTINYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Raoul Sanchez

I honestly have no idea what it will sound like, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's more straight forward, considering JP seemed to be the one more into that kind of thing then MP.
