DragonForce, who is also on RR, apparently just announced their new singer in the form of a YouTube video. There is nothing on the RR site that I can see about it. That's pretty much "How not to do PR 101" which surprises me because RR is usually pretty good about promoting things. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mLf2K5V5S4

I would be surprised if we didn't get a video from DT, but I would be even more surprised if there wasn't an official textual release about it.

Take into account Dream Theater is a much bigger band than Dragonforce. The new DT drummer annoucement surpasses anything Dragonforce does or ever did.

I think it will be bigger than just a youtube video.

They could sneak the announcement in through the back door, letting the drummer post it on his website in a casual way: "Oh, and by the way, I'm in DT now. Now off to Starbucks".

Seriously, this announcement is a huge opportunity to create some momentum and interest in the band, but I'm beginning to fear that Portnoy really did possess most of DT's PR "know-how". The other guys saying that they're gonna step up and fill Mike's shoes and then not really doing more than the occasional tweet saying "all is well. Stay cool, dudes", that isn't exactly comforting.

So maybe we'll see some incredibly clever PR stunt to release the news, but I'm starting to doubt it. Eventually someone will leak it, and that'll be that.

DF's new singer sounds pretty sweet, but anyway, on topic..

I think it is absolutely imperative that the announcement is made before the end of the month. I get slightly worried thinking about what would happen if April 1st came around with no official press release. I highly doubt it will get held up another full month, but then again, we kind of expected an announcement by the new year and that didn't happen.

We'll probably find out in some painful way. Say, waking up with the drummer's name cut into our wrists. Or maybe with it burned onto our foreheads. Or maybe at the end of a Justin Bieber video. (Just had to).

Man, what exactly do you want to hear (apart from the obvious "who's the new drummer") from the guys?

I recall having 3 or 4 (excluding the audio preview) updates before BC&SL was released. Portnoy indeed kept us interested and hungry, but that's about it. That's what the guys are doing right now, and it's okay.

Agreed. When MP was in DT, it was just him and almost noone else speaking to the fans. Now we get news from JLB, JP and JR regularly. I don't see why we could complain about that.

They should do it like DragonForce did it. Not posting a video of the drummer playing, the other way DragonForce did it. They got an interview with Herman Li and Marc where Herman was saying "hey there I am Herman Li, this is Marc Hudson and we're from DragonForce, as you know, we parted ways with our ex-singer and now Marc is our singer" and then Marc spoke.

DT should do the same. Take, say, Myung ('cause he's the asian, like Herman

) to an interview with the new drummer, "I'm John Myung, this is Mike Manginni (huhuhu) and we're from Dream Theater", and then Manginni (huhuhu) speaks.
