Would it bother you if the symbol didn't appear on the next album cover?

I've been thinking about this recently. With MP gone and the whole 'fresh start' thing going on, there is a remote possibility that the band could ditch the Majesty symbol for their next cover. Would this bother you? Or would you just think about the music inside, rather than what's on the cover?

They're probably gonna use it, but we have to prepare ourselves for any possible outcome regarding DT11.

You mean the Dominici Symbol

But yeah, I would miss it.

I consider that possibility incredibly remote.  The symbol has survived at least four lineup changes, including a founding member - not sure why on earth this would be different.  If the symbol were gone, it would probably be because the Dream Theater name has gone with it.  Like I said, incredibly remote.

TL

I would be disappointed, but obviously it wouldn't actually diminish my excitement for the album at all.

The Letter M

Keep the symbol - it let's us know that, no matter who is in the band, the band is STILL Dream Theater, and it's symbol is exactly the same as it's ever been.

That would be a huge mistake and turn off for me as a fan.  They should use the symbol and keep the DT font.

No, it wouldn't bother me.

rumborak

It wouldn't bother me at all. In fact, I would welcome it in the sense that it would be a strong statement. What I really wouldn't like DT 11 to be is business as usual.

rumborak

yeshaberto

I wouldn't flip out, but it would be my preference to keep it as at least one mainstay

lucky7

I prefer it to stay. I saw it on a car the other night driving in front of me, it looks good and easily recognizable.  :)

fadetoblackdude7

I'd be upset if it disappeared. Hell, I'd be even MORE upset if they changed the logo!

are you being serious?

edit too lazy to write

DT album art, symbolism, and lyrics are all nothing special.  I listen to DT for the music.  So leaving it off doesn't affect me in the slightest.

KevShmev

I couldn't care less.  The music is all that matters.

orcus116

Seriously, it's just a thing they put on the cover. Not that big of a deal.

i am fabio

I'm with the people who are saying that it wouldn't bother me at all. i'm talkin like NOT AT ALL.

CrimsonSunrise

I think it would send the wrong message to ditch it.  It would say..."This symbol is MP"  I don't think, and never have thought this is the case.  Besides... I have it frikken tatoo'd on my forearm....and I'd hate to think I just have a MP Tat... :omg:

Mladen

Not a big deal. I didn't even know it appears on every album cover until you guys pointed that out a while back...

Because...

emtee

Only think I care about is the music. Symbols, artwork, etc...mean nothing to me.
They are seperate and not connected in any way with the music itself.

Dublagent66

Can't vote because its a total non issue.

rumborak

Agreed.

Also, cover art is about the last thing I worry about anyway.

rumborak

They could have the logo somewhere less conspicuous, say on the narrow edge of the CD cover. I just think the "Where's Waldo" approach to the logo was soooo overdone, like so many things.

rumborak

Lowdz

The logo is a seperate thing. As I said in a different thread I'd be buying the album if it came in a brown paper bag.
If it wasn't there I probably wouldn't notice until I came on here and there was a thread about it.
I also wouldn't be concerned if the album cover was just the symbol.

jmbeat

Two members of "Majesty" are still in the band, and the logo has become synonymos with DT, there is no way it will be put aside, hell it was even used in that Edens Curse video

BRGM

I would miss it a tad bit

Iarwain

It'd probably be a bit odd but it wouldn't bother me.

While it certainly wouldn't be the end of the world, I like it when bands have a character or symbol that remains consistent throughout their entire history.  When Falling Into Infinity and Once/5 years in a LIVEtime used a different font for the band name, it just looked and felt weird to the fans who had become accustomed to having the name of the band look the same on every previous record (WDADU predates the DT font, so it doesn't count).  Imagine if Iron Maiden changed the font of their band name and Eddie was nowhere to be found on the next album cover.  While it is true that it is really the music that should matter, these sorts of reoccurring motifs on album covers are nice touches that maintain continuity throughout a band's career.  Hell, I would feel a bit uneasy if Queensryche forgot to include the Triryche on the cover of their next album, and I haven't really cared about any of the music that band has put out in the past two decades!  Mascots, symbols and trademark fonts are all part of the image and aesthetic of a band, just as important as the name itself and the genre of music they chose to identify with (if any; avoiding genre tags can be used as a form of identification as well, although it often comes across as arrogant and self-absorbed).  With the situation Dream Theater is in right now, I think it would be very unwise for them to forgo the Majesty symbol.  They are at a point right now where their fans are on edge, concerned with the continuity of their music in the wake of Portnoy's leaving which could possibly facilitate as of yet unforeseen changes to their musical style.  Maintaining the Majesty symbol shows the fans that no matter what roster changes the band will endure, this is still Dream Theater, with all the artistic expectations that go with that name.  As long as they chose to call themselves Dream Theater, the Majesty symbol should grace the cover art of each and every single one of their records.

ricky

yeah. but the question is, why would they ditch it in the first place?

cuz portnoy left?

so, cuz portnoy left, they are no longer DT?

somewhat of an epic fail paradox. It will be there.

Implode

I don't care if it's on the cover, but I would care if they stopped recognizing it as a symbol for DT.

FretMuppet

Well, technically its actually Dominici's logo, and they kept it when he left. What's Mike's departure got to do with it?

orcus116

It's odd, for as long as Dream Theater has had a symbol I've never once thought of them as a symbol band, if that makes any sense.
